Apologies for the somewhat ignorant comment.
Not ignorant at all, and you are spot on about the wooded hills and suggestions of gentrification. However the difference between this hinterland (places like Heathfield, Battle, even Rye) in social terms changes abruptly once you hit the coastal strip, notwithstanding @OptareOlympus's colourful comments about SUV-owning DFL's above. Fair to say that Hastings has a "colourful" social mix! Also fair to add that a lot of people like it that way, but apparently not Stagecoach.

Fairlight sounds lovely but a fair chunk of it has slid down the cliffs over the years, adding to its other problems...

A full 2 weeks after Blean (just outside Canterbury) was left unserved by the frequent 400/401 due to emergency gas works, a shuttle bus is now being provided by Regent Coaches, 7 journeys a day on Mon-Fri. This operates from the Royal Oak pub to St Edmunds School where connections can be made to the 400/401.
I just saw Streetlite SL16YPF operating to St Edmunds School on the 09.54 from Blean, with no passengers to connect to the 400/401. It might take a few days for people to find out about this shuttle.

Whitstable Labour Councillors posted this announcement from KCC, though it seems to be a message written by SGN.

A290 Pean Hill - UPDATE FROM KCC- Thursday 08 October

Pean Hill remains closed while we carry out essential repairs to our network. To complete the repair, we need to replace a section of our gas main. Due to the complexity of this work and the need to use specialist equipment, this work is taking longer than originally expected. We remain committed to completing our work as quickly and safely as possible.

We are aware that this is a busy route and are very sorry for the inconvenience caused. The closure is necessary to ensure safety while this work is carried out.

We understand the road closure is affecting bus services and the people who rely on them. To support the community, we have arranged a shuttle bus service with local providers Regents Coaches, to help minimise the disruption to local travel. The service will begin from the morning of Friday 9 October and will run through the day, Monday to Fridays, until the road is reopened. This will allow passengers to link up with the Stagecoach service on diversion.

A full timetable can be found below. This information can also be found along with future updates on our website here https://www.sgn.co.uk/our-gas-works/roadworks-your-area.

For further information about affected bus services please visit Stagecoach website here https://www.stagecoachbus.com/regional-service-updates/south-east

And here is the page from Stagecoach South East. I’m not sure Stagecoach have anything to do with organising this shuttle bus, though they have cheekily said “we have arranged a shuttle” :D (though reading again, it looks like they’ve just cut and paste SGN’s message)

This has now been extended to open on 9th October 2026
Extended again to the 15th October 2026

Due to the emergency closure of Blean, all services between Whitstable &Canterbury will be diverting via Brenley Corner A299 & A2.

We will not be able to serve between Clapham Hill & Rough Common until the road opens.

This is an emergency closure with no notice given to Stagecoach.

I know it’s an emergency road closure, but I believe it was known to be a major job from the start, so really there should have been a shuttle service much earlier on than 2 weeks after the closure.

Interesting, thanks. I bet the diverted buses don't stop at Rough Common, which Stagecoach abandoned (apart from school buses) several years ago!

No, they wouldn’t.
The only public transport going through Rough Common (apart from the mentioned schoolday buses) is a community minibus operated by the local private school Kent College, which only operates one return journey two days a week, and only during Kent College rather short school terms. I have no idea if they have given up running this yet though.
