While travelling on 1A10, 06 55 Skipton-Kings Cross this morning, I was advised by the train manager that a large number of trains into and out of Kings Cross were cancelled this morning following overhead line issues on the Welwyn area. He warned that we may be diverted or delayed. I'm the end , we had a trouble-free journey and arrived in London five minutes early. However I noticed that the departure boards at Kings Cross were still showing a large number of cancellations.... presumably caused by the cancellation of incoming services. I have now been advised by the TM of my Northbound service (1S15, 12 03 Kings Cross-Inverness) that the problem was allegedly a loss of power to a substation.

Many thanks for the update. We were booked on the 10:58 Darlington-KX which has been cancelled. Luckily we checked at breakfast and got to Darlington for the preceding 10:27. The new “use your cancelled train ticket on an alternative service” worked like a charm and the lady at Darlington booking office made us seat reservations on the 10:27. The reservations were made at 09:57 but of course the on-train reservation display had not updated 30 mins later when we boarded. Luckily the clerk had given us a paper reservations receipt so we were able to explain ourselves to the non-plussed overseas travellers who were, quite rightly, sitting in seats showing a green light (note: NOT even an amber “may be reserved later” light). The seat reservations lights finally updated just before we arrived at York. This is hopeless customer service: either make the reservations on the hoof system work, or scrap it and keep the *entirety* of Coach C (on LNER) for walk up travellers.

Or for LNER to go back to "Seat might be reserved later" displayed with an amber light for those seats which can change along the route.

Either that or cease offering new seat reservations when the train departs the origin station. If someone buys a ticket all they get given is a counted place reservation.
