TransPennine Express is to receive in 2034 29 five-car battery electric Adessia Stream trains built by Alstom in Derby, DfT said tonight. Rock Rail will own the £1bn fleet which features level boarding and 3 wheelchair spaces, leasing it to TPE. Production starts in 2028.

The Derby Telegraph article linked from the BBC said 121m trains, which is about 6 x 20m carriages or 5 x 24m if they'd fit?

Derby giving a realistic introduction time once they manage to iron out various faults, see various other Derby trains which have been delayed

But yet more new trains for TPE whilst other operators have to make do with ancient sprinters or hand me down trains :rolleyes:

Alstom is to build 29 new battery-electric bi-mode trains for TransPennine Express (TPE) at its Litchurch Lane factory in Derby.

They will be the first battery-electric trains for long-distance main line services in the UK. Construction of the five-car sets is expected to start in 2028 with the first entering service from winter 2034.

The £1 billion deal is the first for Alstom’s Adessia Stream units which have replaced the Aventra as the manufacturer’s standard unit and will support more than 350 jobs with the company along with another 6,000 across the supply chain.

A DfT letter (about 3 years ago) said upto about 195m long, so probably 8 coaches. Letter says 29 trains plus 26 options

Exciting! First Adessia Streams, which is cool. I'm very interested as to what the interior will be like (though it's definitely not designed yet). Livery application is erm... well, I'm sure it's not finished yet. The windows look nice and big, and level boarding is very good.

Are these going to be specialist charging facilities, rather than just OHLE in the platforms?

The announcement is certainly good news, and would not be surprised if other operators seek follow-on orders of this fleet type where appropriate.

Without seeing any pictures of intermediate coaches it's hard to say how many doors those carriages will have.

Could just be the end coaches which have one door.

The whole thing seems like an enormous screw up, lower capacity, not fast enough to make use of the upgraded tru lines, very cramped seats. I guess we will soon be grateful when an 802 shows up

To add to the one door per coach comments, it is also only a single leaf door. They could maybe get away with one (double leaf) door if it was Aventra sized (they are a definite improvement over Electrostars for passenger flow), but this looks to be even worse than the 755s, which sometimes take over a minute to unload IME.

I would also like to point out how hilariously bad the photoshop is (look at the reflections). So I therefore would advise against analysing the image with a fine toothed comb.

Where are the pictures of the seats? Not seen any pictures of the interior yet.
