6 Greater Manchester stations to get accessibility upgrades

Kier has been appointed to upgrade accessibility at 6 stations : Bredbury, Flowery Field, Newton-for-Hyde, Lenenshulme, Davenport, Woodsmoor

Passengers using Flowery Field, Newton-for-Hyde, Levenshulme, Davenport, Woodsmoor and Bredbury stations will benefit from the investment, with Kier appointed by Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) to deliver the design and build works.*

Funded by the Department for Transport’s Access for All Programme and locally devolved City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS), the upgrades will provide step-free access and improve the experience for all that use the railway.

Kier will:
  • Evaluate options and progress outline and detailed designs before work starts
  • Work with partners to find smarter, better-value ways to deliver the upgrades
  • Complete the improvement works at each station ready to open and hand over

Very happy at Flowery Field being done. Saves my mum and my brother having to get a bus into Manchester with his wheelchair.

Flowery Field shouldn't be hard. It's got a ramp down to the platform already although a stepped one if I remember correctly (it's been some years since I used it). Newton, that could be interesting as it's on a slope and quite tight for space. Will be interesting to see what they come up with for it

Yep, very shallow stairs. They'll have to loop the ramp round the back of the platforms as converting the stairs directly into a ramp would be far too steep, so potentially the ramp will either loop a lot or end at the Glossop end of the platforms.

Levenshulme will be quite a challenge - on a high embankment, hemmed in by streets and buildings.

Looking on google maps I think you could quite easilly slot in a couple of lifts at Levenshulme. Doing it without lifts would be rather harder.
