They could put the locos into all over blue with a large GBR logo, that would solve most of the issues.

Blue with a large logo... something like this, maybe? ;)

Also of interest, if you really zoom in on the carriages further down it appears it just says 'Great British Railways' on the side, not 'Great British Railways | Chiltern' which is a change from how this transition has gone so far
I'm almost certain "Chiltern" is still there, it's obscured by the white pallet in front of the third coach (counting from the left) but you can just about make something out on the second coach just above the white pallet (arrow)

quick question pls,
Are locomotives going to be painted in the new livery please? as seen alot of locos being repainted in BR livery now.
I think the new livery is ok.
Very few locomotives will be directly owned or operated by GBR. I think only Class 91s on LNER, 57s on GWRs sleepers, and 68s on Chiltern.
The Caledonian Sleeper locos are hired from GBRf by a Scottish government-funded operator, and the 67s by TfW

WM Orange livery is an exception. Not sure anyone knows if it was Abelo or the WM Combined Authority who designed it so it may not necassarily be a TOC livery and would have happend under BR replacing Cenntro Blue and Greeb.
I think the oranges and diamonds are pretty embedded into the bus infrastructure in the West Midlands so I doubt it was Abellio.

There are some Class 08 shunters around in TOC liveries too, which will presumably also be re-painted into the GBR livery at some point. Northern have 4 Class 08s, all of them in East Midlands Trains livery I believe, West Midlands Trains have 2, 1 of which is in West Midlands Railway livery, and GWR have 5 of them, 1 of which is in GWR livery, 1 in INTERCITY livery, and 2 in BR Blue, 1 of which has a non-standard version of BR Blue, I believe.

Which one is in WMR livery, are you thinking of 08616 which is in London Midland livery?

South Western Railway also have 73235 still in use at Bournemouth as a depot shunter, although its old South West Trains blue Desiro swoop livery has been overpainted to be blue all over (inadvertently making it almost look like a base GBR loco ready for the Union Jack bits to be added!).

That just makes me think of the 47s that got Union Jacks on the side.

As much as I hate this livery, I feel like I would tolerate it much more if the same design wasn’t continuously plastered on each intermediate coach.

Here are some edited examples of the same design principles of the GBR livery applied to the intermediate coaches seen on other liveries. Looks strange doesn’t it? (Or not, we all have separate opinions)

I’m with @XCTurbostar with the idea that all GBR liveries are just media specials and not yet refined.

Seeing a Class 450 with that livery just looks very strange to me. Unless if you have the front Class 450 DMSO looks like the Stagecoach Bus beachball livery.

I think there is widespread concensus that it isnt great as it is. Youd need the white and red union jack to form stripes or something that would continue on every coach to meet up again at the other end to join the mirroring union jack bit. It may look too much like network southeast.

There are countless examples of where the brand/media teams chose a livery for press impact and then once the 'grown ups' start to discuss the practicalities, things are amended.

To a degree - we have already seen this with:
- Omission of the livery on the centre coaches for odd consisted units (the IET render had a completely different centre coach)
- Class 357s having the 'flag' start further back on the bodyside as well as a black cab roof
- Class 387, 701, 720 and 357 all have differing ways of showing 'GBR' on the cab
- Class 720 and 357s have varying disability and bike stickers which demonstrates a lack of consistency

History is littered with these examples, within Anglia:
- ONE Anglia initially applied its livery as vinyls in dark blue without painted bodyside skirts before settling on light blue
- ONE Anglia Stansted Express 317729 carried a completely different orange livery from launch

My hope is that a simpler, standardised livery is adopted which can both meet the executive lust for a flag but is operationally practical. Graffiti and subsequent cleaning, for example, would severely damage the entire livery.

- Class 357s having… a black cab roof

The Class 357s having a darker roof is a continuation of what happened with the Trenitalia c2c livery, which has a darker grey roof than the light grey roof that the National Express c2c livery has. As the other units have been vinyled instead of re-painted, the livery on their roofs haven’t changed, just on the sides of the carriages. It’s a shame, because I prefer the yellow part above the cab windows that the Class 357s used to have before the Trenitalia c2c livery too - the yellow makes them look like they have less of a big “forehead”. Hopefully the Turbostars will have yellow above their cab windows.

Part of the GBR positioning difference is due to the units - the Class 357s don’t have a blank space behind the cab and before the saloon windows that the other Classes have. Also, the GBR double-arrow logo and word-mark which were on 357 020 and 357 008 were either only on 1 cab of each of them, or has been removed after the launch, because subsequent photos of them don’t show it, and at least the one end of 357 201 which I’ve seen doesn’t have it either, which also seems to be the case for 357 202 and 357 203, from photos of them which I’ve seen. A bit of a shame, in a way, because for me, it was redolent of seeing the Network SouthEast 3 stripes on the yellow ends of trains.

I don’t know if any of the other units thus far re-painted have names, but 357 201 “KEN BIRD” has what looks like a freshly-painted metal name-plate, which has the same colour scheme as on the previous white c2c liveries - silver or bare metal for the name and the frame around the outside, raised above a white field/background (357 202 and 203 also have names, but I haven’t seen them myself, or looked for photos of their name-plates post-re-painting). The white doesn’t seem so GBR to me, so I think it’s maybe just been done the way it was before. There was apparently a unit, 357 327, which was named “SOUTHEND UNITED”, which has a silver frame and letters on a dark blue field/background instead, but that is pre-GBR, and is Southend United’s shade of blue.

That just makes me think of the 47s that got Union Jacks on the side.

c2c also had 2 Class 357s (which are mostly maintained at East Ham Depot) with Union Jacks on the side - as the Class 47s were a Stratford Depot thing, I guess it might be an East-London-and-further-East thing.

These c2c units had union jacks for the Queen's Diamond Jubilee in 2012, union flag units were numbers 005, 006, 019, 225 and 227 (subsequently 325 and 327). these were just never removed for a reason I do not know. believe 325 and 327 are yet to be refurbished so still retain the union flag

The Class 47s were for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee in 1977, too, but I meant that East London depots rather than any other depots around the country were the ones that chose to have them. But, being from there myself, East London/Essex, I see lots of Union Jacks and St. George’s flags flying around where I’m from, which makes me feel quite unwelcome.

Just a reminder that discussion here should be confined to reporting what units etc have been painted in the new livery.

If you want to discuss what you think the livery should be then please start a new thread in the Speculative part of the forum.

Anything for Chiltern or SWR?

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

If they did this as the final design, keeping the original TOC liveries and just applying branding, it would be a lot better to stomach than that car crash of a full livery!
The GWR and IC225 applications are exceptionally tasteful!

Seems a bit odd, GBR Anglia on the full livery but then put Greater Anglia on the temporary version.

Other mistakes on there too - GWR says centre on doors when it’s clearly not!

Although if it is genuine it’s not really a shock as clearly whoever is doing it hasn’t really got a clue on consistency! All being done on the cheap (but probably still costing a fortune!) and clearly shows!

I thought there was a document showing the names each line will be 'named', eg it is GBR Anglia, no mention of Greater.

For the current LNER that becomes GBR - East Coast.

I think the pictures are someone's attempt to show what could be done with out full GBR livery being applied.
