So long as no-one does clever things with interfaces so archive material remains available! (Apologies for straying OT, but this is a sore point with me. I have a commercially recorded CD of documents I would dearly like to access, but the Adobe software refuses to open in anything newer than now non-existent Windows 98.)
What Adobe software is causing the problem?

The following morning, 5382 and 5405 returned from Eastfield, ran down the branch, coupled onto the Royal Train and then hauled it, with 6119 still attached at the rear, back up to the exchange sidings. Here the 29 was detached and the pair of 27s headed South with their VIP passenger, causing some considerable distraction to certain pupils of Hermitage Academy at Craigendoran....as @Cheshire Scot may be able to testify. About half-an-hour later, 6119 - looking rather forlorn, despite her gleaming paintwork and white buffers - scuttled past light engine on the way back to Eastfield, having performed her final passenger duty. She was withdrawn five weeks later - despite having undergone an intermediate repair and repaint at St Rollox works in August of that year - and was cut-up at the same works in the Spring of 1972....one of the last four survivors of her class.
I do not recall that particular Royal Train instance, presumably whatever lesson I was in at that time was on the 'wrong' (eastern) side of the school with no railway view as any WHL movement on the western side always caught my eye. One chance Royal Train sighting was that returning the late Queen south after opening Cruachan Power station in 1965, crossing the bridge over what was then the road to Drumfork Farm at the junction of East King Street and Old Luss Road. I walked under that bridge four times a day for six years as that road also led to the back entrance to the schooll - do kids still go home for lunch these days, not many I imagine.

Thanks to the contributors who replied to my query regarding the replacement of class 27s by class 37/0s. I have checked my haulage records and note the same locomotives that were mentioned. Unfortunately, I didn't take a note of the dates for these journeys. This thread has brought back some happy memories of my trips on the West Highland Line.

Without the disk in front of me, I think it's Adobe Acrobat 6
If you just want to view the documents, not edit, then Acrobat Reader 11 should work
Download if from https://get.adobe.com/uk/reader/

you may have to change the program defaults after to use the Reader as Windows will try to open the files using Edge and may have problems with older PDF files.
If you want to edit the files then you might need a third party solution - we should be able to find something

Many thanks for your suggestions. There's a caution here I guess for those tempted to digitise their old spotting notes.

Do you recall what was hauling the Royal Train on that occasion?

This is a particularly interesting Royal Train working.

HM the Queen was still at Balmoral, the outward working was from Ballater to Dalmally, the return was Taynuilt to Alyth Junction.

The train ran less than a month after the Glen Ogle landslide, if that hadn't happened I guess that the train would have run via Callander, and it would not have passed through Craigendoran.

The only traction that I know for this Royal Train is that the first leg, from Ballater to Aberdeen, was D6142 and D6145, and it was the last Royal Train at Ballater.

Don't forget how expensive slide film was then - Agfa CT36 was 36/- (£1.75) when a good wage was £20 a week. One of my first films in 1965, Gevaert - was ASA 25 (ish) slightly earlier ones had been ASA 5. That pretty much demanded shutter speed of 1/30 sec at f8 (for reasonable depth of field) on a sunny day, so anything moving was blurred.

Looking back at my photos I very often regret not also taking a picture of what was visible in the background, as well. But I just couldn't afford to photo everything interesting.
As a penniless schoolboy in the 1970s I could only afford black and white film - Ilford HP4 from memory. I developed it myself. I now have hundreds of negatives which I am very gradually scanning into my PC.

1981 I had a 26 from Kyle to Inverness, then 50 years later a 156 to Wick and back...All day on a unit..Thank goodness for the Scotrail trolley!
I still recall my 1990 drudgery of a 156 out 'n' back to Thurso; utter boredom and lack of head-out, especially after 37 417 to and from Kyle two years prior.
The only moment of interest aboard that 156, was when one of its secondary suspension air-bags suddenly burst.
