Why doesn't Ripon have a train line towards Harrogate or York?

Maybe a smaller new town with 5-10k houses close to junction 50 of the A1(M) could help justify reinstatement.
It's clear that 20-25k population along the route isn't enough to support rebuilding, but the northern section between Ripon and Northallerton has plenty of unremarkable land and North Yorks is a highly desirable place to build more housing (proximity to several large urban areas, plenty of low value land and ex military sites etc.).

Moving to towards Ripon its clear the route is well lost and terminating at the end of the available track bed is around 1.5km from the market place, a 15 to 22 minute walk. A radical solution with money no object would be bridge the bypass, knock down some industrial units. bridge some car parks like the GC are doing at Loughborough and provide a station nearer.

Terminating *near* Ripon. Where would you stable and maintain the couple of class 398s, given that they're based in Wales? It wouldn't be cheaper to construct, unless it was a tramway. In which it would be run with a tram, not a class 398. With the nearest tram maintenance facility being in Sheffield.
I'd presume they'd be maintained with other electric rolling stock. The new Harrogate-Ripon section would be tramway based, but possibly with discontinuous electrifcation, but the 398 would run on the mainline from Harrogate to Leeds. The big advantage of tramway based construction would be dodging small numbers of houses on the existing trackbed, allowing any level crossings on the old line to be revived, and perhaps approaching a more central area of Ripon than would be possible with heavy rail.

Maybe a smaller new town with 5-10k houses close to J47 of the A1(M) and alongside the existing York - Harrogate - Leeds railway near Cattal station would be a more effective and efficient way of delivering housing in N Yorkshire, without dropping half a billion quid on a new railway.

That is exactly the current NY plan, I believe. The new town will be centred on Cattal station and stretch towards Hammerton.

I didn’t know that (genuinely), but it does show what 10 seconds looking at a map and an A Level in economics can do.

Although a lot more of the available land in that area is floodplain!

That’s not right; very little around Cattal station is flood zone, only a small part alongside the beck.
For a development of that size, we need to consider a lot further than just the area around the station.

These are interesting figures but more details are surely needed - For example, of the £18,000 from army traffic a fair amount (majority?) must have been for rail usage elsewhere than the Ripon line? And even in 1961 did pick-up goods trains cover their costs?
Why more details? We have researched for the last 40 years building a case for reinstatement. What makes you think it was from elsewhere? it was purely from the two camps in Ripon for travel warrants for personnel, whole troop trains and equipment/vehicles brought into and out of Ripon goods yard by the daily pickup goods. Revenue from the pickup goods train did not go through Ripon booking office but Beeching added it to the line operating costs.

The camps had their own railway system until after the war leaving the Ripon line about 2 miles south of Ripon station. It opened before WW1 and closed just after WW2

In reply to Bishops, there was a bus service from Ripon station to Fountains Abbey that stopped when the line closed

Comments like this completely undermine my confidence in the other arguments. The line was making a profit if you count the income from the large customers that were a) handled centrally and b) have now closed down. I know advocates are supposed to use the rule of best evidence, but this is simply misdirection because it loads in revenue that could never be part of a modern day business case.

That's a pity, because I think there is a reasonable case for improving links to Ripon, and that this would be better done by rail than by upgrading the A61.

One Ripon army camp is still open but everything has to use road transport since the line closed The army had choice as an option was removed.

There was a teacher training College in Ripon about 20 minutes walk from the station with 800 students. Many used the railway for trips into Harrogate, Leeds and Darlington but used the train for weekends away to see parents. After the railway closed numbers applying for places declined until in 2003 the College closed as students could no longer get back to Ripon from distant railheads. My wife lectured there and lost her job. The College contributed £4 million ponds to the local economy. The last Principal told me that the college closed as the railway was not there.
Moving the goalpost I see. You would have had more credibility if you acknowledged those houses in the first place.

Not at all. I was saying that on the ground there is not a kink in the former trackbed now. The houses were not build on the trackbed. Not everyone wants to travel to York or through York. There are plenty of trains each hour via York. It would be a through service for Harrogate, (100,000 pop) and Ripon, (18,000 and rising) and wo. This route is 12 miles shorter than via York and would have been competitive with this route when we started the campaign in 1987. If the line was reinstated, Harrogate-Ripon would be 90mph and Ripon-Northallerton 10mph as it virtually straight. Leeds-Harrogate could be upgraded to 75mph as newish signaling was installed for this speed. So times of services this via Harrogate would be less than 10 minutes slower than via York.

The track bed was between the trees and the houses property boundary. No kink. There was a level crossing behind the camera where this road crossed the line. There was no curve as in the photo. It was a 90% junction.

All the top photo shows a line of trees and not the trackbed. If you look carefully to immediately north of the houses there is a low three arch viaduct just visible that lines up with the road in front of the houses. I am not saying that the houses are safe from demolition but no kink in the ground. Arup spent a lot of time on route optioneering but could not find an alternate route.

The railway crossed Boroughbridge Road on a metal bridge which is now somewhere in Filey as it was listed being original 1846. It will be bridged again. As I said before the bridge over the River Skell and embankment here was built 3 tracks wide which is sufficient width for a single track railway and road. the road is wider than it need be. The proposed station site is only 8 minutes walk from/to the city centre. Again it is all the work of Arup. They costed a single track viaduct type bridge from south of Boroughbridge road to north of the Skell at £7m at 2005 prices.

At the same time, passenger numbers on the regional railway are far more bouyant than in the mid 1960's.

No doubt about that, Rob. Ever since Regional Railways, through franchising and aided by the Community Rail movement there has been an imperative to fill empty seats on existing lines and within current fleet capacity.

Unfortunately this process seems to be bumping up against the walls in terms of fleet availability, platform lengths, etc.. It is sadly far from clear that GBR will be able to expand these, especially with the demise of earlier generations of local DMUs and the need to replace them with more expensive bi-modes to modern standards, level boarding and so on.

Also as the East Midlands and GWR have discovered, the challenge of restoring any ‘spare’ and stored cascaded fleets such as the Class 360s and 175s in the short term is a tough nut rather than a ‘quick win’.

Returning to your original point, if passenger numbers have been buoyant you should look at the stratospheric rise in costs, especially for re-openings, alongside it.

True. The costs for running a six carriage train, in terms of wear and tear, staff and fuel ought to be not to dissimilar from the costs of a two or three carriage train.

This is an area where we ought to be increasing value for money in terms of provision.

Yes.

Apart from parts upkeep and maintenance, fuelling to move something twice the weight, cleaning time, cost to refurbish, cost to lease, cost to buy, cost for more stabling space

I guess the only bits which remain constant are the cost for a single guard and a single driver.

Cost to lease - leasing should be gradually replaced.
Cost of fuel - my knowledge of physics is ropey, but isn't it the case that momentum means that a adding an extra carriage will require proportionately less energy to move than the first carriages

If you don't scrap many trains the specialist parts end up costing more to replace as they probably wont have much in stock and thus making new costs more

I agree with ending the leasing however if they come with a maintenance contract then I can see why it happens if they get a good deal

My physics isn't up to much but unless the other coaches are powered then i think pulling a greater weight uses more energy than a lesser weight

Yes, pulling a greater weight uses more energy than a lesser weight, but I always thought that the amount of additional energy to overcome things like friction reduced proportionally.

Everything else being equal, more coaches = more fuel used, but not necessarily in direct proportion.

Momentum = mass x velocity.

Doubling the weight (mass) of something moving at a given speed doubles the kinetic energy and momentum.

I think air resistance is the only element which doesn't increase directly in proportion to mass (number of vehicles), though that is not insignificant at higher speeds.

If you look at Network Rail published EC4T rates, they are pretty much a linear function of the number of carriages. At ordinary speeds air resistance has a negligible impact on train length. At an operational level what makes long trains more economical is staff to passenger ratio. At an infrastructure level it's a case of how many carriage km (and by extension passenger km) the fixed capital costs is spread over.

Ripon does not produce sufficient punters to support long trains.

Point taken regarding Ripon and long trains (not that I don't agree with opening it for all the reasons cited anyway).

So you're saying for infrastructure costs, longer trains will potentially be beneficial to spread the costs amongst more people.

For fuel costs, not so.

This suggests that doing away with track access costs wouldn't be detrimental.

You can’t just “do away with costs”. It’s a question of how they are fairly allocated to GBR, freight, TfL (etc.), open access and charters. Otherwise you just end up with the head of GBR saying to the DfT and Treasury, “the cost of the network is £xxx,million every four weeks, give us the money, please” (and offer up a far smaller sum of gross revenue that goes nowhere near meeting it).

The variable component of track access costs is a complex theoretical calculation designed to represent the cost of the marginal wear and tear on the infrastructure of that vehicle. It is the best estimate there is.

Incidentally it is not just a privatisation thing. BR was looking at something similar (albeit more basic) in the latter days for cost allocation between the different sectors and subsectors. I only know of this because I did it.

In short, the marginal operating cost of running, say, a 6 car service compared to a 3 car service will be double for everything except the staff costs. Although not all the costs of running a service are marginal.

It's like extracting blood from a stone, but at least we got there. Well done. Not a good look for someone with 40 years of learning opportunities.

You are not going to build a track on the road serving the houses. You are not going to build a track on the reservation. You are not going to build a track that'll create two level crossings. There is no viable alignment.

Based on other reopenings, a simple single track branch from Harrogate terminating at Ripon would seem the most likely. I wonder if the Leeds-Harrogate- York service could split at Harrogate? It could be worth looking at whether a couple of Class 398 tram trains would allow cheaper railway construction, including level crossings and even sharing a road if nessecary.
Indeed. They could inter work alongside their classmates employed on the restored Leeds to Pool/Otley via Arthington run.

Yes, that's a fair point that wear and tear costs have to be identified. Is the track access charge the best way to ascertain it though.

So to reinstate the railway there you'd have to demolish the houses as there's no way they could be accessed. And to reinstate the level crossing you would have to demonstrate there was no reasonably practicable alternative; given there is space to divert the lane and bridge across the railway, that would appear to be reasonably practicable, so that's probably what would have to happen.
