Green polling appears to have peaked, and when a decline begins those involved get desperate, which may well be behind this:

Reform UK say they are reporting Green Party leader Zack Polanski to the police after he shared a post to his Instagram which included a photo of a man wearing a top featuring the name "Nigel" alongside an image of a guillotine.

Polanski accepted a request to collaborate with another account and shared a series of pictures of a Green Party event on Sunday with his 713,000 followers.

One of the images showed a man wearing a T-shirt which said: "We're only making plans for Nigel".

A Green Party spokesperson said: "Once this image was brought to [Zack's] attention he immediately unshared the post. He unequivocally does not support this type of dangerous message."

The Reform UK leader, Nigel Farage, criticised Polanski on X.

Sharing a screenshot of what Polanski had reposted, he said: "If I was to post anything as inciteful then I would expect to be arrested, and so should Polanski."

It is understood Reform UK are reporting Polanski to the police. The party's home affairs spokesperson, Zia Yusuf, said "this is incitement to murder".

Zia says "This is incitement to Murder".
Yet they paraded someone who was convicted of something very similar at a party conference (Lucy Connolly)
Double standards much?

Indeed, but it's still a monumentally stupid thing (at best) for Polanski to do.

Or perhaps its yet again Reform trying to claim they are the victims.

Polanski didn't write the message or post the image, he also didnt actively share it. Instead the person who posted it added Zacks account as a contributor. That is quite different to making a post or sharing one yourself. It is the equivalent of someone else tagging you in a Facebook post.

Now maybe you can argue politicians should be more careful when it comes to things like this than Zack clearly has been. But to call it incitment to murder and try to blame Zack personally for a post someone else made is reaching just a little in my eyes.

This isn’t quite correct. For the post to show up on a collaborating account, that account has to accept the invitation to collaborate. So although he didn’t author the post, he did decide to share it with his followers.

If I was Colin Moulding (XTC, writer of 'Making Plans For Nigel') I would be considering a cease and desist statement for dragging an epochal (and personally political with a small p) rock classic into a wholly inappropriate zone. The band's politics never encompassed this sort of directly inciteful nonsense.

Which is what I am talking about when saying politicians should be more careful.

But as someone who for some reason still uses Facebook quite a lot, if someone tags you and you don't see anything wrong with the text or the few photos that get previewed, then you accept it. You generally don't look through every single photo in a tagged post, and in larger posts that just isnt realistic (e.g. in the past ive been tagged on posts with 80 plus photos - like hell amI looking at every single one). Instagram collaborations work similarly, but I am not even sure if you get a preview. So basically, by using that feature, there generally isnt a realistic expectation that someone looks at every single image before accepting.

Again, more than happy to agree that people in public life should be more careful than Joe Bloggs, but that would require changing how social media is used in these large organisations quite a lot as tagging / collaborations are common to reach multiple audiences.

That is to say, yes its careless. But anyone like Farage trying to play the victim should focus on larger problems.

I thought Reform were all about free speech and being allowed to say what you want so long as it is “pub banter?” Surely a joke about putting a Nigel (the post didn’t actually specify which Nigel) in a guillotine is just “pub banter.”

They’re amazingly thin skinned, even for fash.

Agreed, because it lets Farage play the victim card yet again.

Should there be distinction between origination an offensive post and forwarding one? Plenty of people have come unstuck due to the latter and the standard excuse is that it wasn't intentional. If the law is going to apply to some then it should apply to all without distinction. Jo Brand making a joke about throwing battery acid on Farage shouldn't have been allowed either. Where does it stop.

Planning to stand in the by-election, although there might be a split among Green members in the area who don't think he is pro-Gaza enough:

Green Party leader Zack Polanski has confirmed he wants to stand in the by-election brought about by Sir Keir Starmer's resignation as an MP.

Polanski, who is currently a London Assembly member but not a member of Parliament, said he was "so excited by the prospect" of being the first Green MP of Holborn and St Pancras.

The Greens are targeting the seat, until now a Labour stronghold, after coming second to Labour in the area in local elections earlier this year.

Sir Keir announced on Tuesday that he was quitting as MP for the London constituency, two months after he stood down as prime minister, setting up a challenging by-election for his successor Andy Burnham.

In comments to the Camden New Journal, external on Thursday morning, Polanski said: "I have lived and worked in this community over many years, I know it well and I love it.

"It represents so many of the things that make London so special. I am so excited by the prospect of representing this place in Parliament."

He added: "It's a clear fight between Labour and the Green Party."

The Green Party currently has five MPs.

In order to officially be the Green candidate for the seat, Polanski needs to be selected by local party members - something his comments suggest will happen.

But there have been reports in recent days of splits among local Green activists, some of whom are said to favour a pro-Gaza candidate.

And it is currently unclear whether Andrew Feinstein, the independent runner-up to Sir Keir in the constituency at the 2024 general election, will stand too which could split the vote.

A date has not yet been set for the by-election.

Sir Keir had been MP for the area since 2015, but said he was quitting to focus on a role in international affairs.

The former prime minister had previously said he would stay on as an MP until the next UK general election, which is not due until 2029.

He said it was the "right time" for him to "pass the baton to a successor".

"I will now focus on other things and that will be international affairs including defence, security, trade and technology in a fast-changing world," he said, adding he would also continue his work combatting violence against women and girls.

Sir Keir became prime minister after winning a landslide majority at the 2024 election, but quit No 10 after pressure from Labour MPs to stand aside.

Labour has not decided its candidate to potentially take on Polanski, with applications closing on Friday.

Aparently George Galloway's Workers Party of Britain is standing and have selected a candidate.

That arrangement could be scuppered in Holborn and St Pancras, as Hussain Shafiei, known as “Uncle Hoz” online, was selected as George Galloway’s party’s candidate.

Shafiei said: “It will be a pleasure to stand as the Workers Party GB candidate.

Having the Workers Party stand could split the vote for the Green Party as the Workers Party didn't stand in Gorton and Denton.

Realistically for both Labour and the Greens Holborn and St Pancras is a must win by election.

For the Green Party some in the party are getting a bit frustrated that their leader is not an MP and is shouting from the sidelines. If Zack Polanski were to lose this by-election, then his leadership and authority would likely take a massive hit.

For Labour it would be a massive blow that the seat held by the Prime Minister only a couple of months ago has now gone to another party. Plus this was the constituency of Frank Dobson, losing it would be another blow. If Labour can keep Zack Polanski out it would be a massive boost to them well beyond Holborn and St Pancras.

I did see someone on X suggest that Rupert Lowe's Restore could win here and I thought not a chance.

Camden is too left leaning for that to ever happen.

The more pressure Labour gets from their left flank, the more Andy Burnham is forced to basically up his game in office.

This could be interesting...

The Greens are facing legal action from a portion of its own members after a trans woman was elected to a role on the party's council.

Eleanora Folan, who describes herself as a communist and 'anti-Zionist', won a vote last month to represent the Eastern Region on the council in a women's role.

I don't know how much of the Greens' support this applies to, but the issue of Gaza/Palestine unites a very broad coalition of voters who on everything else completely disagree. For example, a social progressives supporting things like LGBT go against Muslim voters with very socially conservative views, so this could be the motivation behind that legal action.
