A half hourly train service that has to fit in with a main line operation, and ferries that don't run half hourly is never going to have perfect connections for all journeys.
Seems to be a problem on the main line railway in any case.

Recollection from when I used to travel that way regularly is that the two made reasonable connections, but then Wightlink changed the ferry timetable. Not that they made much effort to cater for the slightest delay: a dozen people coming off the train to see the gangway (they were still using it) just starting to lift and being greeted by a smiling member of staff telling us not to worry as that was the previous ferry running late.
Seems endemic where there are two different operators.
E.g. Bus 164 from Salcombe to Totnes is run by Tally Ho!. 93S is run by Stagecoach to a modified timetable from Torcross to Kingsbridge and often delayed by the culvert works in the centre of Kingsbridge (they can't organise a S/bound exit from the bus station so it has to go all round the town).
On my last trip the 93S arrived 20 late and pulled up right behind the 164, which promptly left leaving any transfer pax firmly behind.
Of course if the Primrose Line had remained open it would have been a lot easier. Think what tourist revenue it would be raking in these days...
Is this the railway's fault or the ferry operator's issue?
There's always been complaints about the Lymington connections, whether at the ferry or for up/down trains at Brockenhurst. Plus the sectional running times for the branch don't really give much leeway to cater for changes to other services at either end (also tide/weather dependant). So having a max 30 min wait isn't really a killer - there's a waiting room/cafe on the quay. Travellers just need to check their ferry/branch/mainline times before travelling.

Whats considered the more important? Ferry connection or connection at Brockenhurst?
Operationally, neither. There were times when Control might ask for the Lymy to be held such as in disruption and there was a risk of missing the last ferry/train etc. There's quite a few services at Brockenhurst so no real way to synchronise connections.
It sounds like the ferry connection is well catered for if the thread discussion is about the train and ferry arriving at the same time. Connecting at Brockenhurst shouldn't be a problem either as their are plenty of services aren't there? Sorry should have looked at a timetable before assuming that!

Don't forget that some weekdays the ferry goes every 40 minutes and on others every hour. The train services from Waterloo and the connection to Lymington are every 30 minutes. Clearly that will not work on a day when the ferry runs every 40 minutes. I blame the ferry.
