Do you mean a service subbed with a unit or a service that just doesnt offer a hot food menu?

In first class you get tea/coffee/juice, crisps/snacks as part of the upgrade.

Saturday service not on the list for the dining. Not the end of the world as it was only £8 more to go first.

Cans of water and packet of shortbread.
I have had that a couple of times, without the shortbread.

To be fair, there was one trip where they were assuming people wanted water and when I asked for coffee there was coffee available. Another passenger got a tea.

Sadly, water does not contain enough caffeine.

I think someone got crisps, but they did ask. I had brought supplies. Next time I will try the dining service. least the cans of water were cold!

I happened to use the MK4 service yesterday on a return journey from Cardiff-Port Talbot. I noticed the Conductor/Train Manager carrying a can of Water towards First Class. I wonder if at the minimum they provide Water to customers who are in First Class. I walked through First Class as it is quicker to get out of Port Talbot station if you walk to the back of the train and noticed quite a few sitting in First which surprised when there is no catering. Some may have travelled from Manchester/stations on the Marches however.

Southbound, catering typically stops around Abergavenny.

Northbound, usually starts around Newport.
You'll usually find there is no catering whatsoever between Cardiff and Swansea. I travel on these regularly and have never seen it in operation.

What is offered in first class?

When there is a first class host available, the basic complimentary selection includes:
  • Tea (pot of)
  • Coffee (instant)
  • Peppermint Tea
  • Water (still or sparkling)
  • Orange Juice

  • Salted Crisps
  • Shortbread

I think the Sunday afternoon service has catering to and from Swansea? Not a chef of course being a Sunday but customer host.

But I wondered if the Conductor perhaps would hand out cans of water at the very least to any first class passengers when i seen him carrying one last night.

Personally my opinion is there should be the minimum of the above on all on all services that offer First Class for the entire duration of the journey.

There are often cans of water in the DVT, so conductor can retrieve those if needed. They typically wouldn’t have access to the catering area. There are generally no hosts between Newport and Swansea. On rare occasions a host who is themselves travelling to Swansea may as a courtesy continue to serve whatever is available. As a general rule I’d say don’t expect any catering except between Newport and Manchester.
