Trivia: False destinations on trains

Where there's a looped service or a service that does not go the main way, train companies often use false destinations to help passengers not get on the trains that take them the long way round.

To start, Waterloo-Weybridge via Hounslow services are advertised at Waterloo to go only to Addlestone (as there are faster Weybridge services) and at Weybridge, trains are advertised to only go as far as Barnes.
Are there any others in the country?

Some cases to avoid passengers getting slower services where there's no fare difference, like (I think, at least in the past) South Hampstead for London Overground services at Watford Junction.

Leeds to York via Harrogate advertised as terminating at Poppleton or Burley Park in each direction.

The Harrogate Line in Yorkshire provides a slower journey between York & Leeds, which is handy if there's an issue on the main route through Garforth. Destination boards in York & Leeds use the penultimate stop on the route in the respective direction.
"Burley Park via Harrogate" in York.
"Poppleton via Harrogate" in Leeds.

This works as long as passengers don't use any apps which just display the last station of a particular service, because the fake destination either isn't properly in the data feeds or the app in question doesn't show it. Then people search for trains that aren't on the boards...

I am sure that this has come up before and Wirral Line Liverpool loop trains are an example e.g. Chester to Chester

Way back in the 1970s, the Birmingham to Euston via Northampton trains were usually shown as going to Hemel Hempstead. For Watford Junction and Euston, passengers were directed to the InterCity services.

Won't happen now obviously as LNR and Avanti tickets are not interchangeable.

Salisbury - Romsey services via Southampton and return use false destinations at various points on the routes. Platform displays at Romsey show Salisbury for northbound trains, but southbound trains are announced as heading to Redbridge if routed via Chandlers Ford; or as heading to Chandlers Ford, if routed via Redbridge.

Indeed they are, displayed as to Liverpool Central until departure from James St (the first time, on the way to Moorfields) it changes to being the true destination.

Another SWR example are the weekday London Waterloo to Aldershot via Staines services which are advertised as going to Frimley, as Alton services offer a quicker alternative from Waterloo to Ash Vale and Aldershot down the mainline.

The Waterloo to Portsmouth via Eastleigh services used to be advertised as Cosham, however I believe these are advertised as going the full journey at Waterloo now since the drop in frequency on the Portsmouth via Guildford ‘Direct’ route since Covid. Similarly, I seem to recall the pre-Covid Waterloo to Poole stopping service was advertised in the up direction as Farnborough towards the start of its journey as it used to get overtaken once or twice by faster services, but I can’t remember if the down service was advertised as Brockenhurst or something.

Other SWR false destinations include, for different reasons, the Kingston loop services, which understandably aren’t advertised at London Waterloo as going to London Waterloo. From memory they are advertised as Strawberry Hill via Kingston or Teddington via Richmond. A similar situation exists with the weekday peak time Hounslow rounder services. One assumes similar circular services operated by Scotrail (Glasgow Central to Glasgow Central via Cathcart) and Southeastern (Cannon Street to Cannon Street via Woolwich & Sidcup) also do this.

The EMR services that run via the Joint Line to Doncaster from Peterborough are shown on the departure boards as running only to Gainsborough Lea Road. I can only guess this is to avoid having passengers who are heading to Doncaster accidentally boarding these services instead of an LNER/Grand Central service via the main ECML.

Ealing Broadway was used at Oxford to discourage passengers from using the turbo stoppers for Paddington.
Reading did the same to discourage people using the Elizabeth Line through to Paddington before the tunnels to Abbey Wood opened in 2022.

Southeastern metro "loop" services will use Slade Green, and then later change to whatever London terminus.

SE high speed services that used to loop back to London would have had used false destinations too.

Circle Line trains often don't say where they are actually going, but rather e.g. "Circle Line via Victoria & Tower Hill".

Many years ago I joined a train at High Wycombe with "Little Kimble" on the destination blind. Obviously it was actually going to Aylesbury - as indeed was I.
Now, I can understand the train being advertised at Marylebone as only going to Little Kimble, but from any other stop on its route (from Wembley Hill - as it was then called - onwards) it was the most direct service to Aylesbury - there are no stations between Marylebone and Neasden Junction.
And at Marylebone no-one would see the front blind unless they walked right past the whole length of the train.

In a normal timetable there is a Waterloo - Westbury service which goes via the Yeovil stations first (16:50 from Waterloo). Advertised at Waterloo & stations towards Salisbury as heading to Frome to save someone boarding it wanting Westbury itself.

Other SWR false destinations include, for different reasons, the Kingston loop services, which understandably aren’t advertised at London Waterloo as going to London Waterloo. From memory they are advertised as Strawberry Hill via Kingston or Teddington via Richmond.
Indeed - they change at, i think Wimbledon to say they are going to Richmond, and at Norbiton to say they are going to Waterloo. Similarly in the opposite direction, at Richmod they say Wimbledon, and at Strawberry Hill they say Waterloo. However, the talking ceilings give the entire route - which can confude people joining an outbound service at, say Vauxhall or Claopham Junction when it says the train is going to Waterloo.

One oddity is that Waterloo to Strawberry Hill is quicker via Richmond - and cheaper, because Strawberry Hill is in Zone 5 and Kingston in Zone 6 - and Waterloo to Teddington is quicker via Kingston, but the destination shown on the boards at Waterloo in big friendly letters lures people into going the wrong way round.

For a short while SWT showed peak hour Shepperton via Kingston services as only going to Teddington, because the peak-hour-only services via Richmond get to Fulwell 7 minutes earlier and Shepperton 12 minutes earlier, but people weren't using them because the Kingston line trains leave Waterloo one minute earlier. This led to overcrowding on the Kingston services. Unfortunately it didn't work, because regulars were used to trains with the ultimate destination as Teddington going via Richmond, so Kingston line passengers didn't notice them, and Richmond line apssengers were taking them by mistake.

About 20 years ago Kings Cross did this on the main departure board for Cambridge stoppers, only advertising them to Foxton, see here:

Travellers waiting beneath the main arrival and departure display at Kings Cross station London. May 2005

But I recall the destination on the train was Cambridge.

The occasional Manchester to Manchester via Glossop and Hadfield will show either Glossop or Hadfield on the front and on the PIS at stations (they reverse at both Glossop and Hadfield, so will show the destination as whatever the second reversal is).

If you were to show up at Inverness station a bit before 5am, intending to get to edinburgh using the glasgow train departing at about 5.30, you might be tempted to get on the earlier "Edinburgh" service but this would be a mistake as it goes via Aberdeen and takes over an hour longer.

I find it a little curious that this is advertised as an Edinburgh train when nearly everyone using it will be using it for stations towards Aberdeen. It's anomalous in being a through service - so it's not part of a pattern of operation that people are familiar with.

This seems a good candidate for a "fake" destination.

That’s an interesting one. I guess following this principle, the logical false destination would be Cupar.

At Charing Cross and stations to Ashford, some Kent coast services are advertised as Ramsgate and Sandwich, splitting at Ashford. Even though the Sandwich portion actually continues to Ramsgate.

I always assumed the overlap in each direction might be so they can say there are four trains per hour between London and Strawberry Hill and six trains per hour to Teddington if they advertise them that way. Or, if the rounder one way is cancelled, then you don’t have to wait another half hour to get to Strawberry Hill as you can hop on the rounder going the other way, as both directions show it on their calling pattern.

Even the non-splitting HS1 services show as Sandwich at stations from St Pancras to Ashford, albeit with a small note saying continues to Ramsgate.

I remember pre-covid seeing HS1 Loopers from Dover to St P via Thanet and Medway advertised as Whitstable, presumably to send people to Medway via Canterbury East and Faversham.

Not anymore. Now advertised as terminating at "London Euston".
Cue the Harry Potter tourists jumping on the Lioness line, getting a tour of Stonebridge Park and Harlesden.

Two of them here from this Blu-ray I own.
"Twyford" (Reading stopper before Elizabeth line takeover)
"Radley" (Oxford stopper)

The 0510 service from Bristol temple meads to Paddington via Newbury is advertised as terminating at Theale from BTM. At all subsequent stations its advertised as Paddington. This is only shown on the station boards and online, with the train itself showing Paddington on the screens for the entire journey
