Tyne and Wear PTE and Merseyside PTE

hello, just wondered what the reason was for both these transport authorities for changing their logos since de-regulation - twpte went from the “cross tyne” logo to TW to the nexus sign, whilst the MPTE went from the Catherine wheel to the “m” sign? Whilst TfGM both keep its M blem since it was created back in 1974 as GMPTE. Thanks

TfGM's Mblem isn't the same one as was used in 1974. They keep the concept but it's a different logo.

As to why they changed, most likely the same reason any company or brand changes their logo. Someone in power thought it would be a good idea to change it.

Indeed - we're seeing the bold, visionary all new Weavers' Network rather than Metro in West Yorkshire because someone wants to "make a statement".

I don't know why the T&W was changed at dereg, and again c.1996.

West Midlands has had a few changes from WM (but looked like WTL) to Centro to networkwestmidlands to TfWM

If I had to guess Tyne and Wear changed their logo in 1986 because it had previously been displayed on the front of buses and Metro units (the latter changed to the "M" logo), and they wanted to highlight the change in the running of the buses.
And changing to Nexus was because someone came up with the Nexus rebranding (??!!).

Manchester didn't usually display the M-blem on the bus front AFAIK, so possibly they thought it wasn't as prominent in people's minds.

As for Merseyside the "Catherine wheel" survived for a few years after deregulation. Again at a guess it was changed because it represented the loop-link railway and they wanted a logo that said they oversaw bus services as well as trains.

However they do now display the bee logo on the front of buses. The bee has been used to replace or supplement the M in lots of places

South Yorkshire has changed a few times as well

In most cases the original 1970s logos did look very 1970s and probably needed changing
