Plymouth to Edinburgh train cancelled this morning by XC

I am supposed to be travelling BRI to NCL on 0915 XC service but surprise surprise CV have cancelled it.

I can go via PAD & KGX on LNER (got reservation from GWR lady at Bristol for LNER service).

Have 2 questions: can I get across London without paying for an underground ticket?

And can I claim anything back from XC re cancelled train?

Have had so many cancellations when travelling on a Sunday morning from XC I kind of expect it!!

I am also in this boat (well, not going to Edinburgh - but CrossCountry is very broken today!)

The NRE page says "You may also use London Underground services at no extra cost as required."

You'll be entitled to claim Delay Repay if you get to your destination late.

Not a refund, but as @Adam Williams says, you should have a valid Delay Repay claim, based on your actual arrival time back in Newcastle, compared with what it should have been had the XC service ran (= 1438?) Complication might be how long should be allowed in this delay calculation for the cross London transfer?

Ok that's what I thought, I actually arrive 27mins earlier than if I'd been on the XC service

Panicked as I thought I'd miss the start of the Newcastle Vs Liverpool game!! But forgot about LNER. Hopefully everything will be ok

Assume you're now going for the 0900 (GWR) from Bristol Temple Meads to London Paddington. As you say, possibly no actual overall delay for your journey to Newcastle, although the onward connection (1130 LNER London Kings Cross to Newcastle, arrives 1411) could be busy, albeit if that's the one, at least you do have a seat reservation, and likely a far better overall journey experience than 5+ hours with XC. Hope the cross London transfer goes o.k.

London Underground acceptance aside, Elizabeth Line and Thameslink via Farringdon's another option in this case.

Thanks for all the support, I somehow got the 1130 Newcastle service, despite the GWR service being held at Reading due to drug taking on the train.

And you're right that the LNER experience is light & day Vs XC. Stops just at York then Newcastle.

Does Delay Repay apply today?

What is the "published timetable of the day" for XC?

Did they just remove all the trains from the timetable?

Believe that by travelling via London, the OP got to Newcastle at around 1440, so around the exact same time that they were due to arrive there, had XC been operating (via Birmingham New St).
