Day 598: Sunday 16/08/2026 into Monday 17/08/2026 unexpectedly. Harpenden to Southampton Central - £33.95 - Super Off-peak Return. St Albans City to Harpenden - £2.65 - Super Off-peak Return. Barnham to Billingshurst - £8.75 - Off-peak Return. Havant to Portsmouth Harbour - £2.90 - Sunday Out Return. CP Harpenden £4.10 (and an unexpected £12.10).
Total time today 1280 mins - time on trains 678 mins and time waiting 602 mins. A few track bits today and some near misses at the end.

I really have no idea what to call today. It was all going fine until the end when the wheels came off big time. Disappointed is an understatement.

In hindsight i guess i could have arrived at Harpenden an hour earlier to maximise opportuniy with the crossovers to/from Fast/Slow in use a tad south of the station. 2 crossovers and 2 opportunities essentially with the first one a double opportunity as we crossed from P3 onto the slows immediately upon departure. The first crossover was needed and its always good to get something into the book early doors. A quick return once at St Albans City, and whilst we did slow upon nearing Harpenden, it wasn't enough for the crossovers and we landed in P2. Possession therefore stopped earlier than planned. This is just the latest of examples where this has occurred, and this is certainly prefereable to over-running engineering. However from a collectors point of view it makes for some disappointments, and i think the MML serves up more than its fair share in this regard. I have a feeling i will still be plugging away somewhere on the line in 3 years time long after other lines have given up all their secrets. At this stage there is so much to look at still it really doesn't matter.

My intended chariot to East Croydon was cancelled, which started a bout of RTT queries as to how best could i get back on track - if at all. I knew i had built in to the schedule an hours wait, but surely not at the start?? In the end i chose a semi fast that would still get to my East Croydon on schedule (my original cancelled choice i think was a stopper) and all was well. Escept it wasn't and the connection was missed by a few minutes.

I seem to be concentrating on the Southern network of late and today would be no different from now on. I had bought a return to Southampton, just to be different i guess and the hourly 12 car to Portsmouth was what i would be travelling on. It was packed, but i did get a seat, and it gradually emptied as we mooched along stopping at most places along the way. Much like a few weeks ago i would be alighting at Barnham for another go on the Arun Valley line - this time up to Billingshurst. This leg was virtually devoid of passengers given the 4 car used, and there was a half hour dwell at Billingshurst where i could stretch my legs. The weather was warmer than expected and certainly quite a bit warmer than i could have expected at home. Not a problem at all and rather pleasant in fact. Having confused the rather enthusiastic employee directing all and sundry to the RRB, i had to explain (twice) i was not exiting the station but getting back on board. I am not sure i was believed until i actually did step back on board! Another crossover in the bag with the P1 return..

Cue another almost deserted trip back down to Barnham, which was another welcomed respite from the mobbed Southern Coastway. I forgot to mention that the 12 car inwards was split at Worthing with the front 4 going to Portsmouth and the rear 8 going to Littlehampton. Is this another station i need to revisit for front/rear variants or was it a one off. Its on my list to research, as is Portsmouth Harbour which also uses front/rear i found out later in the day.

So why was i going to Southampton Central today? Well, i still have to cover the tracks between Cosham Jn and Farlington Jn and so avoiding the tracks into Portsmouth from either direction. Not sure why this took so long but it did happen today. The return also covered track into P2 at Portsmouth & Southsea which leaves only 2 crossovers remaining, both of which are planned for my Isle of Wight trip in October. Not much remains in the area after that apart from one of the 4 crossovers at Havant, but i don't think its difficult that one - just at an awkward time of the day.

By the way i had to double back to Havant to get the errant track at Portsmouth & Southsea. Again not difficult i think, but just not that many instances. So, a good look at Portsmouth Harbour station in daylight for the first time, and i had had a nosey at the way down to both the Wightlink Cat berth and also the Gosport Ferry although i have no plans for that latter one currently. It really is built out onto the water... By this time i still had an hour to kill before i would be travelling back to Harpenden via Brighton. It did not take much internal persuasion to go have a cold one as part of that.

So, to the great disappointment...... I set off from Portsmouth at 20.13 and instead of arriving back at Harpenden at midnight 30, it took an extra five and a half hours plus before gaining the car!! Incidentally i was then glad i had the comfortable car not the jalopy. I made all the plans to avoid traffic, and then landed right in the rush hour despite this.

I have been looking to see if the Worthing P1 loop ever gets used where it expects to be passed by a following service, The answer is generally no, and timetabled events really do not need to be timetabled in the first place. However today it was due to dwell in p1 for over 7 mins and be passed by a non stop service during that time. Excvellent - what could go wrong. I did speak to the driver at Hove for a minute and he was as disbelieving as i was as to what actually transpired. You pull the slow moving train into a loop so as to allow the fast moving train not to slow down at all (or as little as possible) Cue signalling error - and i am going to call this as an error as they put us into P2 instead, whilst the through train sat at the signal behind us for a good 7 mins before someone made the decision to put the the through onto the loop and crawl through before disappearing again. Gutted and no need - both trains were delayed unnecesarily by 11 mins cumulatively when no delay at all would have occurred if common sense had been applied. This delay would cost me down the line with me missing my connection at Brighton.

Additionally, my train was terminating at Hove because an incident. What kind we were not informed, and not helped by me and others around me not really understanding what was being said. Nor did we see the guard during the journey despite disruption in the carriages by feral teenagers. The official reason posted after the event was disorder - which makes no sense whatsover to stop the service 5 mins short from its destination after nearly 2 hours. Whatever the reason this was not it especially as we were informed of the change of plans just 5 mins into the journey.

The rant continues, as another basic signalling error occurred upon arrival at Hove. By this time another through train was catching us and instead of putting us in P1 and allowing the through to pass in P2 as would be normal, we were instead deposited in P2, and cue confusiion as instead of stabling in P1 as it would do eventually, it had to run past the signals at Hove Jn and wait for the through train to use the P1 loop (not normally timetabled for any train by the way) before pulling back to P1 where we should have been put in the first place. The driver really was not a happy bunny. Any how thr upshot was i missed the opportunity for 2 very rare to predict track pieces, the second of which would have been fortuitous but right.

But the saga continues as because i couldn't get to Brighton for my intended service, i missed out on what turned out to be the last train of the evening to pass through the Thames core. To add insult to injury that service started from P8 and so used the only remaining track i need at Brighton and not usually planned so difficult to predict. The subsequent ones were either cancelled or diverted to London Bridge. Indeed i turned up with 3 minutes to spare and i had a decision to make. I jumped on with seconds to spare and then set about planning where best to bail. At this stage services were still showing as planned so took the decision to alight at Gatwick Airport. In hindsight it was the best i could have done as each subsequent train through the core was cancelled or diverted to London Bridge with no connecting Underground to St Pancras at that time either from there. Too tired to try and navigate an alternative so i stuck with my "only travel by train" guns and just waited it out. At least i was away from the elements.

The check-in desks were eerily quiet by 1am, and with no hassles from the gate people i could wander to/from the Station/Airport as needed. I did find a slumber point opposite the Gents where the seat configuration allowed some comfort and my hoodie i was carrying doubled as an emergency pillow after it became clear the core was being closed for "emergency repairs" and i could stop my platform vigil. Nevertheless it was doze rather than sleep. I had a wander again at 3am to find the check-in desks once again running at full tilt with lines of folk snaking up and down just like you would expect. The airport never got quiet at all, with stragglers still coming off flights which had arrived hours ago. I had another snooze or three before tranferring down to the platforms again and the first Brighton service (from) with the core now open again. Cue more snoozing as we made our way North and i alighted at Harpenden late enough i had to pay a Monday peak CP supplement before setting off.

I got as far as Birmingham before i had to have another snooze when hopefully J15/16 would be open again on the M6. This had been advised as far back as Luton. It was still closed and long delays (50 mins advised) from J14/15 so i just cut at J14 and made my way via some fast A roads up to Crewe and back on the M6. Apparently some folk were delayed hours and hours but i reckon my own diversion lost me only 45 mins or so. As it was i didn't arrive home much before 11am, but it could have been much later.

It has taken up to now to catch up with missed sleep but i am still returning to the rails on Saturday to have a look at the new track alignment and platform at Dore & Totley after taking Dore West to South Jn's new alignment in as well. Also a near completion at Sheffield with a planned for P2 pass through (P2b going North still required). Beyond that i will maybe have an early morning play at Crewe, but a much sought after crossover at Barrhead for 2 weeks commencing 29/08/2026 will also have to be attended to. Every day not Sunday for the 2 weeks. And then its actual holidays with a trip to the Okehampton area anticipated. Lovely...

Day 599: Saturday 22/08/2026 - Warrington West to Warrington Central - £2.95 - Off-peak Return. Warrington Central to Chesterfield - £11.15 - Advance Single. Chesterfield to Doncaster - £5.50 - 1st Class Advance Single. Doncaster to Sheffield - £2.70 - Advance Single. Sheffield to Dore & Totley - £2.75 - Off-peak Return. Sheffield to Warrington central - £13.15 - Advance Single. Car park - Warrington West - £2.95
Total time today 418 mins - time on trains 251 mins and time waiting 167 mins. Another new platform in the book, as well as some realigned track.

"A surprisingly busy set of trains today"

Things pretty much worked out as expected today after last Sundays meltdown, and this is a major relief. It is also a much shorter day than of late, and also much closer to home. This morning was not much above freezing with cars needing a bit of a help, and then just a tootle to Warrington West for the cheapie CP and then just a short hop to Warrington Central to await the EM service to Norwich. It was not stopping at Sheffield this morning but using the Dore curve to bypass it. Whilst i have done this before, this was before the realignment works and the doubling at Dore & Totley, so this was the main thrust of today. This service was the last service not to be mobbed today and it was a most pleasant trip before alighting at Chesterfield, where a lot of people had amassed waiting for the Edinburgh XC service on the other main platform. I would be alighting at Doncaster from that service, and had unwittingly purchased a 1st class advance. Rather glad i had as it was packed like i have not seen since my commuting days, and i fought my way through 1st class to get sat down, and experienced one of the refurbed "red" units for the first time. Very nice i have to say - certainly from a 1st class perspective. We would be going via P2 at Sheffield, and by doing so i would be ticking one of the last pieces of track that is timetabled there. It was the track at P2b going North that got me the tick, but i was mightily glad i had the seat... I still might score a P6 going North from Sheffield which would be the last feasible thing there that is timetabled. The full traverse of the Down Heeley Loop going North is very much not timetabled but is still a tactical move by signallers to allow slow services to be passed by late express ones. That would be a rare find indeed.

Once at Doncaster i would be waiting for the next Northern service into Sheffield, anf this too was full and standing, but not to crush levels and again i won the lottery for a seat by being in the right place as it stopped at Doncaster. To be honest i didn't see an awful lot of the countryside today after Chesterfield because it was so claustrophobic and i tried to catch up some sleep instead.

Next up was an out and back to Dore & Totley, firstly to catch the new platform which was numbered P1, and then return back to Sheffield, so doing both tracks to the North of the station, one of which is realigned and the other new. The last piece of todays puzzle was to be one of the sardines in the TP going to Liverpool. I don't think i have ever seen quite so many people boarding at any interim station before. I wouldn't have thought it possible to get so many on one train, and even though i had a reserved seat i wouldn't have been able to get near if i wasn't one of the first to board the correct carriage. I struck lucky in this regard, but it was this service that had them fainting further along. I thought the air con had failed it was that hot and stuffy, but it was just uber crammed with bodies. The air con did eventually come back to life in Manchester when the masses departed, err..... en masse and it was a pleasant place to be once more on the jaunt back to Warrington. It reminded of the time it was deemed good TV in the 70's to attempt things such as how many people was it possible to cram into a mini or a VW beetle etc and still move it 20 yards.

Nothing too rare or difficult today, but if i had had to stand most of the day, as was feasible it would have been unbearable. As it was i had seats all day, and i am most grateful that advance singles are a thing. In fact the sort of thing i have been trying to avoid in my "i don't do much in the summer holidays mantra" which i have seen to have forgotten about. As i write this i am not sure when i am will be able to get out next. Illness in the famliy is the variable and of course they come first. I had hoped to be making a trip to Scotland early September for a very rare Barrhead P1 towards Glasgow which is on offer for 2 weeks sundays excepting at 8.22. I would also be going for a timetabled P0 start at Haymarket at 23.11 on 28/08/2026 were it not for a family gathering, but i am sure it will turn up again sometime.

There were also some rarities at Preston Park on offer Sunday 30th, but i am on taxi duty that weekend, although i may have time to turn out at Crewe for a P1 start North early doors instead of making the trek south.

Looking much further ahead there will be the first passenger use of Bletchley high level with GWR of all things, as they are diverting Euston/MKC/Bletchley/Oxford 29/11/2026. I am also informed that sleeper services to/from Cornwall will involve the first use of Old Kew Junction/South Acton for near 30 years? around the same time, but i have yet to investigate this fully. Lots of other unicorn stuff coming out the woodwork between now and then, so i may just concentrate on that kind of thing for a while.

Wouldn't the track being used by the sleeper (Old Kew Junction towards South Acton) have been used by the short-lived "London Crosslink" Anglia service between 2000 & 2002?

Saturdays do tend to be busy days on the railway, especially around summer time.

I believe those services were the last to use them but i thought (wrongly) that was late 1990's. Still, its 24 years ago, and well due a day or two in the spotlight later in the year. I think its Friday night going to Euston and Sunday night from Euston - but i haven't looked at it closely yet. Seems a must for me, somehow. There's busy and there's the "not enough carriages again" scenario, although in fairness TP had a crammed 6 car, and thats the max they use.

Yes that's correct. Sadly I won't be in the UK at that time otherwise I'd be booking onto those services too.

However we wouldn't be able to see much anyway with the section of interest scheduled to be traversed at 0524 Sa 28th Nov and 2337 Su 29th Nov. One could hope for a 2+ hour delay on the London-bound...

Apologies I gave All Platforms the wrong infomation. I correctly remembered the short-lived London Crosslink used Old Kew Junction towards South Acton. However I went off memory thinking it ran at the start of privatisation and not 2000 - 2002. I should have tried to look up the exact dates those services ran.

More of an update than a report so i will keep it short.

Not really been able to do much of late due to various issues, but i did take a turn down to Crewe last weekend where there was the promise of a P1 departure going North and thus using 3 crossovers to gain the Down, 2 of which i need. However on arrival there was a platform change so i just turned round and went home without bothering the ticket office. I think that's the first time i have abandoned!

During the last few days i have been deep diving my platforms to do list, and after much research i have determined that the following platforms are realistically unobtainable without some unplanned emergency intervention, so i have updated my spreadsheets etc to reflect this.

Mallaig P1. GF locked to P2 use and is manually operated by Jacobite personnel on approach. As its locked to P2 there seems to be no operational reason to change things when the Jacobite does not run. Still technically possible i guess.

Kyle of Lochalsh P2. Again a GF has to be operated to gain access to P2 and with so few services why would this happen. Again technically possible but highly unlikely. Planners still show it being used on Sundays but it never is as far as i can see.

Sheerness-on-Sea P2. No longer a designated platform for passengers apparently. Emergency use possible i guess but highly unlikely.

Earlsfield P1. No longer planned for use on engineering days apparently, so again, good luck ever getting the emergency use only servioce.

If anyone can say any different i would love to know for any of the above.

The above stations are now showing as complete in my records. Accordingly my totals are now 2571 stations completed and 5970 platform variations used.

I've just noticed there is a railtour booked to use P1 this coming Sunday (13.9.26) which is timetabled to leave 7 minutes after the scheduled arrival on P2. The railtour is apparently planned to be a pair of HSTs, so no need to run the loco around. Time will tell if it will work out but that could be the one for a P2 ScotRail service. Does anyone have information on whether this happened in the past when this railtour is out? It looks to have last ran on 14.9.25, 10.5.26 and 31.5.26.

The scheduled Scotrail arrival (and departures) for P2 on sundays always get switched to P1. Its a legacy scheduling error and really needs to be updated. If another service then approaches Kyle the schedulers then have no choice but to allocate the LS train (in this case) to the other platform so P1. In reality its almost certain that LS will go into P2 - I would be very interested however to learn if it did on this occasion do as scheduled - but i am extremely doubtful...

Edit: just looked up what happened on the three dates. 1st and 3rd got switched but the second did use P1 and Scotrail P2. Interesting....

I am slightly considering going for it because I've never done any of the Kyle line (well, I've been on a Kyle-bound service as far as Muir of Ord but that doesn't really count) and this feels like a good time, alternatively I can just stick with the easier Stirling P9 services towards Dunblane which is still a chunk of track I'm missing.

In similar news, I also found out there was Alloa service put into the Up Cadder Loop because it left Queen Street before the Edinburgh express service last week. Not sure how rare that is but I'd never heard of it happening, nor is it something you can really plan for, but still worth a mention since I thought those loops would be completely out of reach (and probably still are)

Some of those passenger loops between Glasgow & Croy (and beyond) will only ever see ad-hoc use when a stopper is ahead of a fast train (ie the Alloa - Glasgow train is ahead of a late running service from Aberdeen/Inverness). Very much impossible to plan for in advance.

Yeah, I thought as much. Regardless I'll keep an eye out for timetable alterations that might make it more likely.

Day 600: Monday 07/09/2026 - Carstairs to Glasgow Central - £6.70 - Anytime Return. Strathclyde Roundabout - £7.70 - Valid after 9am Weekdays. Car Park Cartstairs - free.
Total time today 651 mins - time on trains 206 mins and time waiting 445 mins. 2 new platforms added to the total today.

"A day all about Glasgow"

I only had a short window to get out and about this week, and i decided to take a trip to Scotland, and Glasgow in particular. I did have time to research what is still possible in the area beforehand and i had an interesting mix of different things to have a look at. After much deliberation i decided that Carstairs was going to be my start/finish point and it was a pleasant drive through Scotland after braving the constant rain before Carlisle. Free and plentiful parking at Carstairs helped sway my decision and it couldn't be closer to the entrance if it tried.

I still have quite a few PSUL type pieces of track left to do in Scotland, more so than anywhere else, so a focus was on the ones near to Glasgow. Surprisingly, the track between Wishaw and Holytown is very rarely used in passenger service, but as of now it does get a rush hour use by Scotrail, and i was on the Northbound offering which departs Carstairs at 7.39. Only a handful of folk were aboard as we set off, but that quickly changed as we stopped in quite a few places as we progressed towards Glasgow, though also unusually this service was destined to terminate at Garscadden rather then the more usual Dalmuir. So what about the new piece of track? Well it took a few minutes to traverse but it was lined with trees and bushes so not much different to have a look at. The bonus was that it was a daylight traverse, as i think TP have a super early offering as well going South and that's one for the dark unless mid summer.

I alighted at Central Low Level and then waited a short while to move on to Partick. Just a time wasting move really, as i could have gone to Partick directly, but i just needed to get to Queen Street really, and no rush to do so. Remember my no walking rule hence via Partick... Time for breakfast once at Queen Street and then settled down to wait for the Oban train. When researching this i was very surprised to learn that not all trains to/from Oban used the Westerton route any more and a few used the line via Springburn thus bringing into play a pretty good railway quiz question. What station am i talking about? A service departs from a terminus and then stops at the same station once more without reversing on the same through service?

Well, the answer is Glasgow Queen Street as some eagle eyed may have spotted haha, and i traversed a not previously used (for a few years anyway) small piece of track to barrel through Springburn and then down to the Low Level by a continuous curve to the right. This was a through service bypassing all intermediate stations until we reached Dalmuir. So far so good and my next move was to return to Central as i wanted to look at the frequency and pattern of front train departures there.

This set up quite a few hours of just sitting there being pestered by pigeons all the while as i kept a beady eye on the boards. I think Central is the only station where all High Level departures are announced as rear or front platforms. This info can only be found at the station itself as RTT and others don't report it, including Tigertrains which reports back live board info. I already have 5 front train platforms here which were just accumulated randomly on my journeys, but i wanted to see just how prevalent they were. Well, if you sit there long enough all platforms from P9 to P15 have front train variants pop up so that makes 7 platforms used regularly (on a weekday anyway), although it is possible to use a few of the lower numbered ones too, but difficult or certainly harder to predict in advance. More on that later.

After 3 hours i was starting to think that i wouldn't see any new variants (for me), but then P14f popped up and i was off to Paisley Gilmour Street which is the first stop for most services going West from Central. Nothing too exciting in itself, but i did have a new platform to add after a week or two with nothing to show. Back at Central i got lucky straight away with a service starting from P12f which completed my P9 to P15 variants. Again a return via Paisley Gilmour Street. No more new options materialised as i waited for my return back to Carstairs at 17.45 but i did start to see something that i would need to analyse once back home. That is the odd arrival into a front platform, especially late afternoon as service arrived and then joined with the existing rear platform unit to make a larger service for the approaching rush hour. This approach is not foolproof as platform alterations are fairly frequent, but it may be the only way to consider more possibilities. That or just get lucky on the day, as would happen on the Tuesday as it happens. (Platforms get reported as plain numbers so if you see consecutive arrivals in a short time frame its decent odds thats a front train).

So, essentially a day of waiting and observing, but hopefully i can put a plan together for more front trains going forward. Time for my return to Carstairs, which would again go via Holytown and Wishaw though fewer stops on the return. It takes longer than you might think but the train emptied quite quickle and only a few alighted once back at Carstairs. Additionally, this service is scheduled to use the UPL before cutting back to P2, and thus bringing me a late win for the day for the crossover. Not much left to do at Carstairs, but some may be interested to learn that Lumo have a couple of ad hoc uses of the DPL coming up, which i haven't seen before. Sunday 27/09 and Sunday 04/10 at about 13.33 each time (8 minute dwells). Motherwell terminators both.

Next up was to transfer to my hotel which was in Dumbarton, as the only semi decently priced hotel anywhere near Glasgow this evening. I did formulate a plan to do the other half of the Springburn "gap" on a 9pm service to Queen Street from Dumbarton, but i plain just nodded off on arrival and i missed the window to do so. Indeed i didn't wake up until the morning and too late for my planned initial moves but that's for tomorrows tale. I have to come back to Glasgow at least once more so i can fit this in next time so not all is lost. In fact i will need to return to Scotland more than a few times as i still need to address front platforms at Edinburgh as well as those tricky PSUL offerings which are nearly all late at night. Interestingly there are new offerings from the December timetable to look forward to as well.

Day 601: Tuesday 08/09/2026 - Nitshill to Barrhead - £1.65 - Anytime Return. Barrhead to Glasgow Central - £2.90 - Anytime Single. Glasgow Central to Cambuslang - £2.75 - Anytime Return. Strathclyde Roundabout - £7.70 - Valid after 9am Weekdays. Car Park - A new mini housing estate next to the station. So new, no road signs yet - free.
Total time today 241 mins - time on trains 91 mins and time waiting 150 mins. 2 more new platforms added to the tally today (one of these years after the event however)

"Glasgow part 2"

So, its always a bit embarrasing if you over sleep and are late for anything but the whole premise of today centred around one move, and i was an hour late - somehow. No time to panic, could i still salvage it as i knew there was a lot of wriggle room in my my first 2 planned moves. I needed to insert myself on the line to Barrhead essentially, and could i get there in time. Yes i could, just but no official car parks i could use. I just winged it as a shot to nothing and i struck lucky at Nitshill where a new group of houses had just been built and no road markings or signs (or cars) to say i couldn't park. There was no traffic and so i went for it and managed to get myslef up to Barrhead just about on time for the return which was sitting most unusually in P1. As far as i can tell a P1 starter hasn't been seen in the flesh for many a year, although it has been timetabled a few times apparently. However, with all 3 platforms due to be occupied at the same time it was a fair bet it would be used this time. There is a 2 week blockade north of Barrhead for at least 2 weeks, this being the second week, and i could see on RTT that the P1 move has worked all last week so confidence was high that the P1 departure would work. It did, but it was a bit of a scramble to switch platforms in time, and we departed on time and used the little used crossover to get ourselves down the hill into Glasgow.

As soon as i arrived i was looking for a potential P4f that i had identified, but no luck. However, i did get lucky in a different way as the boards showed P2f on a Lanark service. P1 was blocked by the sleeper which was still there and P2 buffers were occupied by a TP unit leaving later. P3 was occupied by a HST testing unit so few other options than P2f for the 6 car. A quick ticket buy, as it was pre 9am and i was off again, just in time. A surprise and welcome bonus for sure. Once back at Central it was another look at the boards for a bit before i had to be in Paisley again and wait for a specific service going back to Central. With nothing on offer i went to Gilmour Street a little earlier than planned and sat it out there rather than run the pigeon gauntlet more than necessary.

I do have 6 pieces of crossover type track left to do in Glasgow and for the most part these can be looked up in the schedules from UTT, though after many years i feel i am only now getting the nuances that the system provides if you interrogate it correctly. Not intuitive at times... Anyway i had found instances of a routing from the West that flags up as line 6 into P14, which if true forces a particular route and i finally after much scratching of heads got this thorny crossover from Line F to Line G (or line 6 to 7 if you prefer) just before the gantry. I got a big win there for sure after finally figuring it out.

And that concluded my Glasgow jaunt, with more to come at another time. I made my way back to Nitshill and then back to the M74 and home as i had evening commitments. Very happy with the outcome for once and i always appreciate the quieter Motorways the journeys provide. I am away from Friday for a week in Devon so one new station to tick off there, but not much else on offer. After that i have no immediate plans as i need to keep my diary free for a week or two, but something will happen i am sure - just not sure when, or what. Looking further ahead i may look at Carlisle again the weekend of 26/27 Sep and take in that Lumo Carstairs DPL service on the Sunday. A few track bits still remain at Carlisle from the early days so i think this would work well. Planning after that is a bit trickier as we are committed to a lot of things Sep/Oct but something will occur. Isle of Wight/Portsmouth 11/13 Oct will happen as will James Street P2 18 Oct come what may...

Oh yes, that second platform completed.... Well i missed P13 at Central on my completed spreadsheet many moons ago and thus it is now updated and everything tallies once more.

The 11:30 arrival into P14 is so that the 11:30 departure on P15 can take Line H and then cross to Line 7 - the only move that does this.

All the little bits of track around Scotland. I hope you have spotted that the 13;19 London to Stirling Lumo is meant to sit in Law Jn Down Passenger Loop to get overtaken by a TPE.

The train terminates at Garscadden so it can head into Yoker depot.

Ah... i can't remember exactly when but i have the other crossover from some time ago. Just looked it up and there appears to now be another service currently starting from P15 with a H7 designation. The other weekday one is a 7.17 starter (wednesdays only for now but m-f from December).

I had spotted that Lumo dwell on my recent overview of all things Scottish left to do but i don't think its due to start now until the December timetable. One i am looking forward to. Lumo is quite the TOC for track collectors as December also brings into play the Quintinshill UPL on the 6.06 Saturday service from Stirling. There may be others as i have not exhausted my Lumo searches yet...

I presume you spotted the 17;09 Stirling to London Euston goes via Holytown & Wishaw, avoiding Motherwell. If you still need the Whifflet - Holytown curve or Holytown - Wishaw curve.

I hadn't spotted that one yet to be fair, but i have the track already. Lumo is your friend for rare track opportunities for sure.

I have missed all kinds of goodness in Scotland this last few weeks, but i can't be everywhere, and it has not always been easy to get away to take advantage. Real life and all that.

I'm not too familiar with past history on rare track and am mostly working on what I've seen in the last year or so, so I don't know if any of these are particularly rare, but both Beattock loops, Abington DPL, Beattock Summit UPL and Lockerbie UPL are all timetabled during the ECML closures north of Newcastle and subsequent LNER WCML diversions on 19/9. I'm slightly sceptical of the Lockerbie one since there is no planned stand time and nothing timetabled in P2 for 10 minutes either side. They'd all be a heck of a pain to do though, I imagine, since most of the required services are pick-up/set-down only at Carlisle.
Beattock Summit UPL is also used by the first southbound Saturday LF service (05:28 departure) every week, so I guess that one is less time-constrained.

Also, does anyone know of any passenger use of the North Curve at Inverkeithing (recent past or future)? I've seen it for the odd railtour I think, but nothing for ordinary services.

What station am i talking about? A service departs from a terminus and then stops at the same station once more without reversing on the same through service?

Well, the answer is Glasgow Queen Street as some eagle eyed may have spotted haha,

(Canty work out how to delete the table in my reply)

Are any of the scheduled to stop at the Liw Level station, though. The one I failed to catch twice within 15 minutes in May certainly didn’t!

Ah well, it doesnt stop despite me implying it did. It just sails through and goes non stop to Dalmuir. To Oban its 10.40 from Queen St mon-fri and 16.39 on a Saturday. From Oban its mon-sat and passing through Springburn c.21.20ish - none of these stop before or after Dalmuir to/from Queen Street. For stop read pass through, which is how i thought i had written it. Proof reading isn't what it used to be.

The lying robots of ai seem to think the curve was last used in 1963 with the source quoted as the branch line society. It was last used as a diversionary route when they did the fife circle as a proper circle in 2007, again during major engineering. Never say never with routings. For example the independent lines at Crewe are supposed to be used again in Feb when there is massive disruption at Crewe. Last used in the 1980s we think.

As for the loops on the route between Carlisle to Carstairs, this is news to me and welcome news at that. I will see if i can get an out and back with LNER on the 19th. I did have other plans (tentative anyway) but as i am prioritising loops and the like it goes to the top of the list. I have just checked UTT and these loops are not scripted which is why it hasn't registered with me until now. I have added them to the longish list of things to do on the site.

I agree that the Lockerbie loop is the least likely one to be used given there appears to be no conflict with anything else. Would love to get that one though.. All of them are pretty rare i think as a scheduled use.

EDIT: Interestingly the diverts are all Northbound apart from the Southbound Lockerbie Loop possibility which does show 6 mins of allowances there on closer inspection. ( i am also ignoring the Beattock UIPL pass as this also does not conflict with anything and is not scheduled to stop. But, its not really possible to do a there and back as 8 min turnaround at Edinburgh does not cut the mustard given the long distances. I guess you choose one of the loops and hope for the best. The Inverness train at Abingdon 15.32-15.41 does also use a rare set of crossovers after Haymarket which may convince some, as well as a promised p4 at Perth. (crossover to, and crossover from P4 if it works which is less than 50%). A big investment in time and money however you look at it...

I'm sure there has been some passenger service use of the Inverkeithing north curve in the last few years, weekend engineering closing Inverkeithing itself with ScotRail running an half hourly service which went round the loop (Dundee to Dundee via Dunfermline).

As for when, I have no clue

I did Lockerbie UPL many years ago. Class 87 failed near Beattock and Beattock bankers (20011+20114) propelled us into that loop, ran round train, and dragged us as far as Carlisle.

Random Chessy service service stopped at Earlsfield P1 yesterday afternoon as I was on a train stopped in P2. Had the gates been open, I would have dashed across to join it (used it before so let it go). Keep an eye on weekend engineering and im sure it'll pop up in future.

As expected, Kyle P2 seems to have been used by the railtour today, not the SR service. There is another tour on 4/10 which goes to Kyle on a similar schedule to today so I'll keep an eye out for the platform changes then. At least I didn't end up going for it myself. I guess the best chance at it will be if there are massive delays or a faulty train in P1, but that can't really be planned.

I don't think I've seen this one before either: since there are Highland Main Line engineering works at the end of October/start of November the Inverness southbound sleeper on 1/11 is being diverted via Aberdeen and is timetabled for full P7 at Aberdeen which I believe has no other scheduled normal passenger use. I can't tell if it's a passenger stop though: RTT says it's just for staffing reasons but it does come up as bookable (albeit fully booked) on the CS site. Either way, P7 (and P6?) may be worth putting into the 'maybe possible' pile if you haven't got it there already.

Finally am I right in thinking that Aberdeen 1+2 and Stirling 4+5 are completely barred from passenger use?

Edit: I realised these engineering works are happening the following weekend, in which case the northbound Inverness sleeper is also diverted and using full P6.

Its good to know that it does still get used, but not currently in a predictable way. This is probably why its not been ticked off my list. With RTT only showing platforms numbers after the event its hard to search for in advance too. However UTT has a more refined search function, so that it is possible to search for by using for a call at Clapham Junction P9 (Down Main Fast Line) and a subsequent call at Earlsfield, which can then only be P1 as there are no crossovers between these 2 points. I have been searching on this basis for 3 years now and not come across an instance as yet. Perhaps i need to know when an engineering Sunday closes the slow lines and test against that..
