Assuming 50% are useable with spares stripped from others - it begs the question, where is their work?
I read they are taking all current subcontractor work in house. But I don't know what exactly that work is, gbrf and colas have been quoted. Penmaenwawr on the north Wales coast seems to be some of the aggregate flows, but I assume there must be other work but I don't know where.
Interesting thanks. Have you got any more info on timescales and what freight services they are going to run? Presumably they only have 1 class 60 available at the moment, but plenty of class 37s? Are they tied up in contract hires?
Some of the existing work involves ballast recycling. So the trains into Bradwell, near Longport. There is a cost advantage to the construction industry using old ballast instead of new stone (aggregate tax).
Looking at the state of those long stored locos, I rather doubt they will get 50% of these working. Those that were "recently" overhauled/modenised by DB stand a good chance of seeing further service, but as for the others - perhaps they might get around 10 to 20 up and running with the rest being used for spares. We will see !
Ownership of 60011 has not changed - or at least not yet.
I am only guessing but I wouldn't be surprised if the majority of the locos will be needing the same components, which were probably already exchanged. wheelsets, turbos, starter motors, alternators, compressors etc. Don't know if class 60s have cannon tubes but I remember some debate about cannon tubes for class 31s being rare.

The bodyshell would require painting regardless. The primary purpose of paint is to protect the body from corrosion: you can’t just slap sticky-back plastic on a bare shell.
