Ryde Pier to shut off pedestrian and vehicle access for cable works

Ryde Pier on the Isle of Wight is set to close to traffic and foot passengers for a weekend next month (September).

Ryde Pier on the Isle of Wight is set to close to traffic and foot passengers for a weekend next month (September).

The foot passenger walkway and vehicle lane on the pier will shut from 10pm on Friday, September 25, until 5am on Monday, September 28, to allow the installation of a new electrical cable.

During this period, access to Ryde Pier Head will be available by Island Line services only.

Wightlink customers will be able to use the service free of charge with a valid ferry ticket or pass from St John's Road.

Bizarrely and perhaps uniquely there will be no vehicle OR pedestrian access to Ryde Pier Head from 10pm on Friday, September 25 to 5am on Monday, September 28 to allow the installation of a new electrical cable.

All Wightlink passengers will need to use Island Line service to reach Pier Head, with vehicle owners parking at St Johns. Better hope demand isn't too high that weekend!

There's been at least one case of a road replacement heritage rail service elsewhere, via the Leadhills and Wanlockhead Railway, though I think that case was inadvisable rather than impassable by foot and requiring a large diversion by road.

I believe the Talyllyn Railway did a similar Bus Replacement Train a few years back, after the Leadhills and Wanlockhead Railway. It was the usual train later in the day but a short rake with a Diesel specially run for the early Bus. It was also a main road shut in the valley with a long diversion. Some TR people may know when it was

There was also the rail service at Workington using a temporary station on the north bank of the River Derwent to provide a service to the town when the road bridge was washed away, necessitating a detour by road of 30 miles.

There was a tram replacement rail service in Prague a few years back, along a goods-only line.

The Ryde Pier one looks interesting, thanks!

Slightly odd that both vehicle and pedestrian accesses are blocked, since the road and foot piers are separate structures. (For those who haven't been there in recent years, the pedestrian route is via a new deck built on the old tramway pier supports). Perhaps the blockage is at Esplanade or Pier Head.

Workington North is probably one of the best examples. A temporary station was built to allow a rail shuttle to carry people across the river while the road bridge was being rebuilt after floods.

Didn’t Llanfair PG re-open as a temporary station when the bridge over the Menai straights was temporarily OOU due to a fire. It then remained open afterwards.
