Just out of curiosity, has anyone from here visited recently?
I've been through the station without stopping this year. I can't remember when I last stopped there. January? I'd have to check my diary. It seems to have calmed down a bit on the ground now with chains, fences, etc removed. The cases going through the courts are more to do with matters which happened quite a while ago if anything. I think everybody involved in the EE case, including the couple, EE's counsel, Lord Lake, are all feeling a bit long in the tooth when discussing matters which happened 3 years ago.

I got off the train there in April, at the start of a walk to Forsinard (which took me over the level crossing). The only obvious sign of the events of recent years was the recently constructed and somewhat circuitous signposted route off the platform.

Which is not all that useful given you can just walk up the driveway.

Thats a question - presuming that H&A lose their case once and for all, would the new path remain or would it revert back to the previous arrangement?

Anyway, thanks to those that replied - I just wondered if there had been any visits by people from here and interactions with the residents of station Cottage

I imagine it'll remain. Saves any potential future arguments I suppose.

I was keen not to look as if I was gawping (and while the recent notoriety of the station is perhaps what put it in my mind sufficiently to plan an actual visit, it's the kind of place that I would probably have visited sometime anyway); if I'd seen anyone I would have waved or said 'good morning', but I wasn't disappointed not to.

Indeed, and if the land was actually leased rather than owned, despite the changes of ownership since construction there would surely be records of the agreement and the rental costs, which presumably would have increased, like everything else, since the 19th century!
Didn't nationalisation in 1947 transfer all active railway land to Britsh Railways, regardless of the previous owner?

NR (or ScotRail) were also prevented by the couple from erecting a request kiosk and associated solar power system which still remains undone. The closure of the station was for the safety of staff and passengers as some of the couple's behaviour during the access-blocking incidents had caused serious concern. The tactile paving wasn't an issue until it came into play with the re-opening.
As I recall permission was sought and granted to use the adjacent quarry (to the west of the station) for access for this work. This was the incident when the gate was chaned up - erroneously reported as one of the residents having chained herself to the gate. Connor, the new husband of the previous owner of Station House, had apparently owned the quarry at one time and had been paid by NR for access, which is possibly the origin of the idea that NR would pay the new owner of station house, but the quarry was not included in the sale of the station house and is now owned by the forestry company anyway.

Just a thought on my side regarding the civil case from Kevin Booth (the sex pest neighbour).

I suspect the couple may actually win this one.

The previous order was to prevent them harassing him. But the new one seems to seek restrictions on videos they're publishing on YouTube. But in reality, if what they're posting is factual (and let's be honest - Booth is a nasty piece with established criminal history and a ban on leaving the UK), then their reporting of such matters isn't unreasonable. Whether filming people with suitcases getting off the train and publishing that is fair game is another matter, but merely reporting about Booth and his abusive behaviour is in the public interest.

I don't hold out much hope for the couple winning their other cases but on this civil case from Booth I think they stand a fair shot. After all, reporting on a crime which has been determined in court is, well, not a crime.

Not all, no

Quite a few independent lines remained outside the control of BR
That’s a different thing though - AIUI the point was whether the land on which what became BR tracks were laid (and associated land) automatically transferred to the BTC on nationalisation, regardless of previous ownership.

The entry on land acquisition in the Oxford Companion to British Railway History, published in the 1990s, says something like 'even today some long leases remain in force', so I presume there was no automatic transfer of freehold at nationalization.

The article says that wayleaves, where the railway paid an annual rent to the landowner for the use of the land, were once not uncommon, particularly in the north-east of England, but gives the impression that they were a thing of the past; leasehold arrangements (where I presume the railway paid a lump sum to effectively own the land for something like 99 or 999 years -- I'm open to correction by people with more knowledge of property law) were more unusual, but also concentrated in NE England, and as mentioned above not extinct.

For anyone wanting to follow the civil case brought against the couple by Kevin Booth, on Thursday, you can obtain a WebEx link by email from wick@scotcourts.gov.uk

Civil case of Kevin Booth (and others) vs the couple transferred to Inverness Sheriff Court, by WebEx. This is because the sitting sheriff in Wick today was Sheriff Neil Wilson who has recused himself to prevent conflict of interest.

Date TBC.

For this specific case, not many. Just the four this time around. Of interest is that the case was continued 'for a different sheriff' on 7 August and here we are on the 20th with the same case listed for the same sheriff.

If four is considered not many, I dread to think how many there are across all the various cases

In relation to a civil case of this nature, would there likely be any interim order to keep the past judgment in effect pending the hearing, or is it acceptable for it to lapse simply because the number of postponements prevents the hearing from taking place in time?

I don't believe there to be any interim order, but the couple appear to have complied with the previous one and I'm not aware of them engaging in anything after its expiry which had it still been in place would be a breach either. So arguably it may be decided that a new order isn't needed anyway.

Yeah unfortunately the way sheriffs are scheduled for the bench means they couldn't guarantee a different sheriff would be sitting. I think given the small pool of sheriffs sitting in Wick, it makes sense to transfer this to Inverness, a much larger justice centre.

Still, I don't think it's doing justice for the couple or Booth and his companions having this drawn out. It's the same with the amount of time the EE case and the Network Rail criminal case have been going on. Nobody's getting justice from how drawn out these are getting. It's also just stressful for everybody involved.

A bit unrelated but I went to look for a particular video today and I notice that the subscriber count for the Altnabreac YouTube channel has dropped from 21.7k to 21.5k since I viewed it a couple of months ago. I wonder if this is the platform pruning bot accounts, or is some of their subscribers are "switching off". It seems a little odd because they haven't posted in 2 months so it's not like subscribers will have seen a notification for the channel and then decided to unsubscribe because they don't want the new content.

Twenty-one and a half thousand !!!!!

That’s ridiculous. It’s more viewers than they get at Pittodrie!

Youtube does regularly prune dormant accounts, ones which have been banned, and bots, so there is always some natural wastage.

It's quite impressive eh.

I haven't exactly been tracking the numbers to know when they've had an influx; I just happened to notice earlier.

Their channel has had a few turning points. It started as an expose regarding the lad who was there before doing car work and died on site. It pivoted to the land disputes. It has since focussed a bit more on the Freeman conspiracy side of things. So there's a few moments where they could've had an influx of subscribers.

The civil case from Kevin Booth against the couple is now scheduled for 2nd September from Inverness justice centre with sheriff Gary Aitken.
