Class 810 East Midlands Railway catering offer

A passenger in First has been allegedly told that sandwiches are no longer an option, because the chillers in 810s are not big enough.

Bear in mind that sandwiches are the height of opulence in EMR First, the other options are two Biscoff biscuits or a square of shortcake.

I seem to remember EMR catering going into partnership with The Soho Sandwich Company a couple of years ago but that of course was before the 810s were in service and if true that sandwiches are no longer available because of space it is crazy considering the profit that such items can bring in.

I think catering is now a pack of food. I was offered a ploughman's pack when travelling recently.

Originally this was for the weekends but it seems to be all week now.

The last iteration of sandwiches they did offer on EMR were (IMHO) a very low grade product - so in terms of profit (or costs to the 1st class 'budget') that must have been maximised already. Well below the standard of a high street supermarket offer - unsurprising of course because on the high street you do need people to actually buy something, and if it's rubbish they won't part with case on a second occasion...

Yep - snack boxes. I suspect nothing in them that needed chilling.

Image of a breakfast snack box in EMR 1st class back in May 2026 - think I have deleted the picture of the Ploughman's version offered later in the day that I had.
Suffice to say it would not have impressed a person having to do a day's ploughing...

That's not correct, it's a temperature control issue that's needing rectification, caused by O/H Neutral Section and Power changeover issues

The children's pack appeared to consist of sweets and other junk food. Not sure how that fits in with healthy eating and reducing child obesity but that's probably a question for a different topic.

Oh the children's pack is awful!!

Some of the options aren't too bad, but some definitely are.

I appreciate people’s arguments that there is little point offering an LNER-style catering service for a max 2-hour journey (despite my constant hammering on that IC fares require an IC level of service regardless of journey time), but catering for EMR First really has become derisory and unacceptable.

To have gone from a proper hot meal in the Midland Mainline days (not forgetting free tea and coffee from M’s bar!) to the current pitiful offering is disrespectful towards passengers paying decent money and reflects my strong opinion that EMR is seen as some unimportant, glorified regional express commuter operation.

I used to value paying the extra money to have a comfortable journey in First and get decently fed and watered; but there is absolutely no point nowadays. Absolutely rubbish.

An interesting comparison is with GWR; look at the journey times from London to Bristol (ca 1 1/2 hours) or even Worcester (just over 2 hours) where a proper First service is provided. Leicester, Nottingham Sheffield are the poor relations by comparison.

And, evidently, GWR even manage to keep their sandwiches chilled on bi-modes ...

Yes 1000%, especially when you compare LNER’s offering (from last May) to EMR’s… (and that doesn’t include topping up drinks twice and coming round with snacks).

Regardless of journey time, this is the standard of catering that EMR’s First passengers deserve considering the money they pay.

At the risk of getting OT for the thread, it's interesting to compare with the Taiwan HSR from Taipei to Kaohsiung. Journey time isn't too dissimilar to the EMR route - average journey time is 1h50.

Business Class passengers there only get a snack and free drinks, but all passengers get the option to buy bento boxes. The quality of these is incomparable with EMR or indeed any UK train. Not only that, but the seats are spacious and comfortable with plenty of space.

There really is a need for some significant improvements on most of our lines, but EMR more than most.

I'm not bothered about food. Greggs exists. All I want is working trains......
Yes, that is absolutely the main thing - as I’ve said before, I’d rather have a 3+2 unrefurbished 360 that gets me to STP without problems as opposed to a shiny one which is part of a dysfunctional operation.

However, if somebody is paying top dollar for their ticket, they quite rightly expect a decent standard in return. Milking people for large amounts of money and giving them a fault-riddled glorified regional express service is unacceptable.

EMR Intercity is a glorified regional express though - journey times and frequencies are comparable to Paddington to Bristol, or Waterloo to Southampton/Bournemouth.

£135 return earlier this week Kettering to St P. Noisy air conditioning, awful seats on the outward. 2 trains in a row cancelled on the return. Everyone crammed onto a 5 car 222 which apparently the rear coaches were going to be detached at Kettering so was obviously 5 vice 10. The Sheffield service that departed 2 mins before had empty seats, ours was crush loaded with a load of extra stops. Sure it made sense to someone.
I ended up standing in the wheelchair bag getting periodically roasted by hot air from behind the bulkhead which is presumably where the exhaust runs, this has a very strange odour of something chemically, not toilet related. Hard to describe, a bit like hot/burnt plastic but not as acrid. Did wonder if it was toxic.

Rubbish service and why they didn't put a couple of extra stops on the Sheffield to even it out a bit lord only knows.

But as I’ve always said to death (and will always do so unashamedly), if you’re paying IC fares, you should expect an IC standard, regardless of whether the whole route’s journey time is only half an hour. And also, why should London-Bristol get a full First class service, but not London-Nottingham/Sheffield. Different railways and particularities I know, but still not an acceptable disparity.

Disgraceful, isn’t it. I’ve said before that I’ve booked to travel from London to Nottingham via Grantham. I (and everybody else who does so, for that matter) should have never had to even consider making that decision - the direct route should always suffice without question. A sorry state of affairs.

Yeah family member went to London today, when I was helping them book their tickets (being the resident train nerd usually is my job) I specifically said ‘don’t use EMR’ because my trust that they’ll get all the way is just not there any more, which is just disgraceful. Surely you should be able to rely that your local operator can get you from A to B, especially on an hour thirty journey or whatever, instead it’s easier (and usually cheaper) to drive to Newark or Grantham and go from there. Just wonder what it’ll take to gain back that trust, and how long it’ll be before people see it as a viable option.

Done it myself!

It’ll take a lot to regain that trust - and, certainly amongst us, I think the 810s will be eternally tarnished with EMR being in crisis.

It’s not just the 810s of course. The abysmal availability of 222s also plays a big role. But yes.

EMR is a disgrace

Though to look at the other comparison mentioned, London to Southampton, Bournemouth and Weymouth, a first class fare on SWR gets you 2+2 seating and no catering of any sort, neither paid-for nor complimentary.

Will kind of be a shame if the last thing EMR were known for before the GBR takeover eventually happens is completely botching all their intercity services but it’s looking to be that way so far, bring back the HSTs then maybe people will be happy…

I always associated EMR with a difference farce tbh, about ten different liveries and ten different interiors — none of said interiors their own. It took them an abysmal amount of time to start getting trains up to scratch. They‘re still far from even halfway, and now they can’t seem to run them at all!

A shame as except for the HSTs with their dated interiors, I liked East Midlands Trains quite a lot. A journey on their 222s I always loved, and I liked their 158s too.

Midland Mainline were class, their food service was top notch.
Absolutely was; and remember the free tea & coffee for all passengers. According to a member of the onboard team, catering freebies cost them £2m a year back in 2006, but the justification was that the customer was at the centre of Midland Mainline’s ethos.

Nowadays the offering is so pitiful that I’d rather they provided nothing at all. For me, the argument of “well, even if it is very low quality, at least you get something to eat” doesn’t wash. IMO, either you do a decent job or don’t bother at all - half-baked solutions cost more in the long run given that the result is invariably a waste of time and resources.

Imagine wasn't the same in the days of the REPs and 442s?
To be fair never marketed as Inter-City unlike London to Nottingham/Sheffield, which always has?

Those certainly had buffets, as did the 444s as built, though I don't know how much use they had. SWR took them out when the 444s were refurbished, along with downgrading first class from 2+1 to 2+2 seating.

The "swallow" era Intercity maps show IC services to Bournemouth, with limited services onwards to Poole.
