I thought that (even a couple of decades ago when I was working with engineers on depots) regen/rheo was seen as very beneficial because it cut the brake block wear so much, and hence paid for itself in savings of both materials and labour. If it didn't do much of the work I'm sure the savings wouldn't have showed and it would have been dropped...
Currently performance for Service braking (average 6%g) on most units* it is sufficient to produce huge reductions in friction braking wear with big cost savings (engineered to do this and no more), however to optimise battery range etc. it needs to be better as the overall energy recovery is too low (and a lot lower than road percentages. It always will be lower but some of the gap is reducible).

[*IET (on diesel) and Voyager /Meridian are good but not huge, others are huge]

To get greater energy recovery (and range especially for services with a reasonable stopping density) BEMUs would need bigger motors, more powered axles or ideally both (and bigger resistor banks to enable a seamless transition to rheostatic if needed) than an equivalent EMU. Hence taking a working EMU design and turning into in a good BEMU design isn't as simple as it first appears (unless you start with something like a Cl. 345 as a high performing start point).

Similarly the current electric HGV tractor units in Europe have the same issues (motors too small and too few powered axles to maximise regen) compared to Tesla HGV tractor units in the states, (in Europe they have been engineered to price point to get adoption and the specification will improve in the future).

OLE maintenance costs will be significantly lower for new electrification schemes. We have ageing infrastructure built before best practice was understood and with now problematic designs: headspans, copper ply wires, AWAC catenary, back-to-back STCs, poor grading of wires, low tensions, fixed-termination systems (not a problem in some scenarios), etc. Current maintenance costs and reliability is not an inherent feature of OLE.

Indeed, but not all electrification maintenance is the OLE, and of course it all still needs inspection.

In addition to saving brake block wear, the TPE trial with 802207 (where one diesel generating unit was swapped for a battery pack) showed a 35% reduction in overall diesel consumption. That's a significant saving on operating costs, with no loss of performance.

Having been at the presentation mentioned in the RE article, the presentation neglected to say how much the electricity consumption went up!!! (yes it did go up and also how much less energy was returned to the wires e.g. both Gross and Net consumption got worse). They didn't discuss the efficiency of the regen which is very relevant for this discussion.

If removing 1 in 3 of the diesel engines and replacing it with a sensibly sized battery, a first guess would lead to an estimate of roughly one third reduction in diesel use which is almost exactly what happened. 35% vs 33.3% is just 5% improvement on the base line guestimate i.e. the impact of regen may be just 1.7% (unless as the presentation and article suggests the battery enabled more shut down in stations in which case the net contribution may be even less.)

A very selective use of numbers in that presentation and I'm far from the only person there who though this...

Piles in place at the Newcraighall end of the line starting at the north Jn and heading south. With about 12 sitting in the small compound stacked up.

There's now 29 masts of varying types on the east side of the line between the Torwoodlee and Bowshank tunnels.

Probably slightly OT sorry, but I make that 3 distinct schemes in Scotland where there are physical "boots on the ground" and masts going in work.
1) This scheme- Borders
2) Thornton area
3) Haymarket to Dalmeny

Yes, started a while a go.
I think that means all the six Scottish feeder stations announced in summer 2022 are now either in use or under construction. They weren't all named at the time but soon turned out to be Ferguslie, Currie, Newton, Portobello, Thornton and Tweedbank.

Dundee will be the first of the next round, but I don't know which one(s) will come next after Dundee.

Photo taken through the bars of a new green palisade gate. The compound surface is unsealed, there is a large green box in the distance (possibly the feeder station - it's roughly where the plan shows it going.) Also several concrete bollards. Out of shot the access road to the gate has been surfaced.

Newton is an interesting one, is it going to be taking over from Eglington Street? And I presume it's grid supply is Clyde Bank 275kV.

No, I don't think so. As part of the same programme, Eglinton Street was beefed up. This press release from Nov 2022 shows it, though it doesn't name Eglinton Street, and confusingly does name Ferguslie:

I think at Portobello the new station replaces the old one? At the other two I'm not sure whether the new station replaces or supplements the old.

Yeah I believe the interventions were to install a cable from one of the Eglington supplies down to feed the route to a new TSC substation at Muirhouse South Jnc in order to feed the route to Barrhead/East Kilbride off of a separate supply to that which supplies the Glasgow Central area as far as Newton. Ferguslie is in many ways an upgrade to Eglinton Street as the west supply side feeds to Lochwinnoch and the eastern one feeds to Kinning Park TSC (and around to Bishopton). Previously Lochwinnoch/Bishopton/Paisley Canal to Kinning Park was fed by Eglinton Street via cables for each overhead line circuit going to the other side of Kinning Park neutral sections. I think putting in an actual TSC at Kinning Park was part of the upgrade as well.

So basically, Fergulsie took over feeding of the inner Ayrshire lines from Eglinton Street. Newton is currently the MPTSC between Gowkthrapple and Eglington Street so whatever it feeds will likely be taking something over from both of them.

But it'd be interesting to see what Newton ends up feeding as there are lot of lines snaking around there with Gowkthrapple and Greenhill's supply areas and alternate arrangements being quite complex. I remember seeing in a sectional appendix that there's recently-ish been a neutral section installed on the Kirkhill line at Newton West Jnc, this might have something to do with it. And another recently appeared at Haughead Jnc but confusingly placed to achieve nothing! Perhaps another will appear on WCML at Motherwell and make it all make sense.

There aren't/weren't feeder stations at Currie and Newton although new switchgear/buildings are likely going in replacing the old. Both were midpoint TSCs. I think in the old layout, the lines east of Currie were fed by Portobello and west of there by Gowkthrapple via Carstairs TSC. Similarly, Newton is the midpoint between the other supply from Gowkthrapple and Eglinton Street and so probably dates from the 1970s.

At Portobello, I think new buildings/switchgear are being built, but the point of the work is to install a neutral section on the mainline at Portobello Jnc (and another on the Millerhill Loop at Monktonhall Jnc). I think the point of this is to allow the alternative supply at Portobello to independently feed the section Portobello Jnc to Longniddry, while the other feeds the route through Waverley to Haymarket and the Millerhill Loop + slight bit of borders railway. This probably has more to do with the ECML PSU than anything else.

Portobello FS, like most feeders, was originally installed with two supplies - but for whatever reason they didn't put in a neutral section so only one supply could be in use at one time feeding originally Longniddry to Currie (and then just to Haymarket once Currie FS was installed).

To my knowledge this is the current situation, hopefully this contextualises what a Newton feeder could do... (The red coming through Garnqueen and orange at Queen Street are from Greenhill FS)

Thanks for all that information and for correcting my misapprehension that Currie and Newton were already FSs.

Presumably the original choice of those sites for TSCs, near major grid sites, was deliberately made with the possibility in mind that they could become FSs in future.

Edit: although in the case of Newton, the junctions there would make it an obvious place for a TSC even if there had been no grid features nearby.

Yeah could be. Would be interesting to know if that was specifically thought about. Interestingly Motherwell was originally a feeder station, I assume it was replaced by Gowkthrapple, but when and for what reason I've no idea. Possibly as long ago as the WCML North project.

Based on RouteView (Network Rail's air operations) photographs, Newton does appear to have its new FS building in, supplementing the existing. It sits on the trackbed of the old Glasgow Central Railway route between Newton & Carmyle, as does the switch farm from Clyde's Mill 275kV Substation.

See below for an approximate sketch (and an educated guess) of how the new Newton FS is supplied. The red rectangle is the approximate location of the existing and new traction power buildings, and the switch farm.

To begin with Dunblane to Aberdeen:

In 2022 Network Rail submitted a planning application (or some related type of notification) to local authorities along the route, leading to the creation of a thread on here:


The link in the first post of that thread still works for me:


If you go to Documents -> Appendix D, it's a list of 189 proposed interventions along the route, some of which are possible feeder station sites. You can find them by searching for "feeder". Some are alternatives to each other, described as options, and some are probably just TSCs, for example Inverkeilor. Other sites mentioned are Greenloaning, Hilton Junction, Perth (may be just an MPTSC), Dundee, Drumlithie.

Dundee seems to be definitely happening as discussed in a more recent thread:
