I've stumbled across some recent docs relevant to this scheme:

In June - a public consultation on a new footbridge at Penistone ("at early stage") - https://www.facebook.com/BarnsleyCo...e-and-car-park-plans-were-s/1415362297290222/ - with kick off next spring for construction.

The proposed plan shows no remodelling of Penistone - although the plan will be a superb improvement to the current parking and access:

whereas earlier in this thread (early 2025) we'd seen this:

plonking a footbridge down would seem to preclude realigning the platforms in future..

CRSTS49 Penistone Rail Station Footbridge and Park and Ride City Region Sustainable Transport Settlement (CRSTS) Strategic Business Case
This project seeks £1.539m development grant.
This scheme comprises two separate packages of work at different locations - 1) Penistone Station (Penistone): delivery of a new lift-accessible footbridge to replace the existing barrow crossing, together with a new Car Park facility on land off Lairds Way (secured through a s106), to provide safer, more accessible access to the platforms and additional parking. 2) Barnsley Interchange (Barnsley): reinstatement of an existing section of decommissioned rail platform to provide additional operational capacity and support planned service enhancements, including the proposed Barnsley–London service. The project is part of a wider strategic bid to improve the Penistone Line which seeks to upgrade the route to provide two trains per hour which is being led by Kirklees Council.

KIRKLEES Council are “awaiting a decision” on whether the Penistone Railway Project “can proceed” to the next step, a Freedom of Information request revealed.


Kirklees Council was awarded more than £100m of Levelling Up money in March 2024, with £47.9m set aside to upgrade the Penistone Railway Line, which runs from Huddersfield into South Yorkshire.
Yet, over two years after the announcement, an FOI submitted by journalist David-Dubas Fisher on April 2, 2026, revealed that only around £960,000 of the multi-million-pound budget had actually been spent towards the upgrades so far.
