Hi All - I'm trying to book from Sheffield to Bristol this Thursday morning on XC but can't get a reservation (including on the forum site).

Is there an underlying cause to this please or are they really sold out?

What time train are you looking at? That would help to narrow down the issue.

Ideally the 09:56 but also checked the 08:56.

NM - I DMed XC on X and they said that both trains are fully booked.

Seems very unlikely the train would be literally fully booked. Something else is likely at play instead.

I've had a look and there seems to be availability on the 09:56 now
Thanks but I booked on the 08:23, with a change at Birmingham, to get a seat.

An old trope but it doesn't help when they turn up with 4 car sets, lots of people standing this morning.

And...going back no seats available on the 10:33 or 11:33 ex Bristol so I've opted to go via London for half the price!

We travelled from York to Cardiff last week and - even though I abhor XC - looked at the prices they were offering, only to find that the first two southbound trains from York which are usually double sets were both "no seats available" and the next one was offering me a price of something like £160pp for York to Bristol Parkway.

In the end we went via London for less than that, and back via the Marches (in First Class) and TPE for a lot less than that!

I wouldn’t be surprised if any XC service does not have seat reservations during the school holidays. On my recent journey, even first class was full and standing. The only option is to hope you get at least a 5 car set, with its unreserved coach, and even then you are taking a big risk unless joining at the start of its route. If alternative routes are available, I would definitely take them over an ostensibly shorter journey.

Meanwhile, the 0642 from York to Bristol Parkway tomorrow for 2 adults has first class seats for £60 less than standard ... or you can wait for the 0725 and pay £767...
