I travelled from Glasgow to Stranraer and back last Saturday and couldn't help noticing the posters advertising the three week closure of the Girvan-Stranraer section for engineering works from next Saturday 8th August. Replacement buses will be in operation during this period for (long-overdue) track replacement and viaduct & tunnel repairs.

I don't have any inside information - so this is purely speculative - but on arrival at Stranraer, there was ample evidence that a major rationalisation will be taking place at the terminus. There were large stacks of new concrete sleepers and a large pile of new ballast in the former lorry park at the landward end of the pier....and the numerous painted markings on the track and paintwork at the station throat would seem to indicate that the signalbox and signalling - which have been rarely switched-in since the ferries moved to Cairnryan in 2011 - are to be abolished and removed, with just a single line running into and out of platform 1.

This would be very logical as it would pave the way for the construction of a new single platform station at the landward end of the pier....which would enable shortening of the line and removal of the rapidly-deteriorating pier in the not-to-distant future.

A local staff member also told me that they thought that the remote Glenwhilly signalbox and passing loop were also to be abolished. This would be ironic, as the box has recently had its unique semaphore up distant signal replaced by a brand new colour light.

Does anyone have any definite information?

I am on the South West of Scotland Transport Partnership board. We had a presentation from Network rail on the new station designs. One of the proposals was to keep a single track running half way up the pier that could be used for charter trains. The new station would still sit on the pier just much further down however there are 3 proposals for exactly where it would be. This is proposed to happen in 3 years when the line is resignalled. I don't remember anything being said suggesting that the whole pier would be demolished I think this would be up to Stena line however as they own large parts of it.

How much does this impact future growth potential?
I get that the line is not exactly a money-spinner, but if Stranraer gets a more usefully located station, and the rolling stock is also replaced by something more comfortable, then having the potential to upgrade from the current 5tpd to an even 2-hourly pattern would make sense if you want to increase rail usage, but may not be possible without the Glenwhilly passing loop.

It's 34mins Stranraer to Barhill, so a 2hourly service would be possible without the Glenwhilly loop

That's great, but then the question is why hasn't it been done yet? (I think I know the answer already)
Nonetheless that'd make for a great quick-win for ScotRail once the station's relocated.

Of course, hourly would still not be possible without the Glenwhilly loop, but given the fairly long journey times and competition by Citylink, I think the chance of that happening is about as high as the chance of the Port Road railway reopening - particularly so since the ferries moved to Cairnryan, which is more or less impossible to serve by rail.

This is already rather far from the topic of the upcoming engineering works though - Stranraer essentially is just one of those towns that are quite difficult to serve well (and affordably) due to the highly isolated nature of the place from the rest of the transport network. Good to see that it isn't being left to rot like some in other countries are though.

I have a recollection of reading that there’s a large diesel tank under the pier which makes any alterations/demolition challenging. Hadn’t heard anything about the Glenwhilly distant (last operational semaphore distant on NR in Scotland) being replaced.

Glenwhilly loop was out of action for several months a couple of years back due to damaged points and difficulty in getting replacement parts, and the service continued pretty much as normal.

Just to follow up on this, I am advised from people in the know that there is no plan to close Stranraer box as part of these works. As to Glenwhilly‘s semaphore distant, it still exists and there are no plans do do anything, given that Glenwhilly box has something of a “finite lifespan“: indeed, it was pointed out to me that if NR was forced to do something, it would be a reflectorised distant board.

Ah....I must have been looking at the wrong direction distant signal! Is it true that Glenwhilly box is due for closure in the near future?

I‘m told that all sorts of ideas are being looked at including possible freight facilities at Girvan and the old Stranraer Town site. I would imagine that things will become much clearer once the Stranraer station situation is decided.

Pictures appearing today on Facebook showing that all signals and points have been disconnected, what's left beyond Dunragit now effectively a long siding.

It looks like they’ve, to all intents and purposes, closed the box. The plan I saw a couple of weeks back shows south of Girvan becoming a long single line with a small new box at Stranraer, new station near the A77 bridge and part of the Harbour station staying so that you could stick a train in there and run a second train from Girvan.
