At one of the TVMs at Earley, shortly before 0900, I buy an offpeak day return to Reading (valid from 0900) and load it onto my smartcard.
Then I touch the smartcard on the reader again, to confirm that the ticket has loaded. (The ticket is described, surprisingly, as a Corporate Off Peak Day Return.)
Then, shortly after 0900, I go to one of the new validators and touch the smartcard on the yellow disc. The display changes from:
Present Card for Entry or Exit
To:
Card not valid 12
This is, I believe, a recent change, and that the old yellow validators would have displayed: Journey Started.
If I do the same as above but after 0930, I don't get an error message, the display says: Entry.
Presumably this is to do with the extension of contactless payment.
This

'Card not valid' message seems unsatisfactory.
Ok, when contactless arrives at Earley, the offpeak time to Reading will become 0930.
However smartcard tickets from Earley are available to many places outside the proposed contactless area, eg Bournemouth (offpeak day return valid from 0745), and presumably these time restrictions will not change.
