Once again this summer the Mariazellerbahn in Austria is using its "Oetscher Bär" vintage set of brown coaches and the classic rod-driven electric locomotives, which Siemens supplied in 1911/12 on the long and scenic branch line from St. Pölten to Mariazell.

The best part of this train, except for the consistent loco haulage, is the open gondola "fresh air" panoramic coach and the buffet car.

Here are some impressions of all these vehicles in action and also the beautiful scenery along the journey in the Alps of Lower Austria and Styria.

About once a month, there is also a steam-hauled train using a class Mh (later ÖBB 399, now back to Mh), built for the Mariazellerbahn before its early electrification.

Nice video :)

Brings back memories of riding on the line in 1980 on my first Interrail trip, when the electric locos (as ÖBB class 1099) were the everyday traction on the Mariazellerbahn.

And well worth pointing out that normal tickets are valid on the very excellent Ötscherbär, the stock is now in beautiful condition, and overall it's actually pretty hellfire (having first done it in 1986 when you could still go through to Gußwerk with a 1099...). Note however that Interrail isn't valid.
