@Ashley Hill apologies for slow reply, I don`t get notifications at moment due to the issues the forum are having around Microsoft Outlook.Power failure in the Camborne area and unable to get above 16mph. Power reset attempted but unsuccessful.
@XFeed What is a power reset?
Due to the limited nature of the information this is a tricky one, when they talk about "power failure and unable to get above 16mph" and "power reset attempt unsuccessful" I assume that they are referring to lack of engine power or transmission power loss as opposed to electrical power ? I seem to recall earlier in the thread somewhere where a unit had similar issues, same unit ?
The can`t get above 16mph is a scenario that I`ve never had reported to me in the past but it would suggest engine/transmission issues as opposed to "dragging brakes" impeding progress but I would have thought that would have been evident and reported. We also don`t know if any engines are out or are derated or have been locally started.
The "power reset" is not a term that we or the operator would have used in the past but GWR are quite entitled to their own terminology that they are familiar with. At a guess I suspect that the train crew have possibly been instructed to carry out a "trip and set" of the unit in an attempt to clear the issue or issues. A "trip and set" is a procedure that can be carried out in a number of ways and most common in service would involve leaving the engines running and tripping and resetting the electrical auxiliaries, while keyed out, by pressing the trip and reset buttons on the cab back wall ensuring that you leave a minimum of 10 seconds between the trip and set button presses. This will very often clear a lot of various issues on the unit but if the problems relate to engine, transmission or cooler group control faults by the very nature of the engines still running during the trip phase this will not solve the problem as the engine ECM, Voith rack and cooler group controller are all still powered up and will not reset any faults they have in them, quickest way is to trip specific circuit breakers to reset the various control systems but I wouldn`t expect traincrew to do this without instruction as it can result in a whole new world of pain.
The safest way for them to attempt to to carry out a total reset of the unit would be to stop all engines, key out, trip auxiliaries but you would have to then wait around 5 minutes for the relay timers to drop out that power engine, transmission and cooler group controllers along with the fire system. Having said all of this and once the unit is then back up and running if the faults are still present then you have not gained a great deal.
Sorry for long reply but sometimes its not just a case of turning it off then on again
