Could the Marks Tey to Sudbury line be operated by Class 230s?

Moderator note - split from:

Maybe in fantasy land here, but the Marks Tey - Sudbury line would be perfect for a class 230 to allow the Stadler trains to be used wider network.

They seem such a waste on such a short branch when the rest of the network could use the extra capacity.

It’s not really a waste as a common fleet is worth its weight in gold.

It is a long while since I visited the Sudbury branch, but the data shows that it isn't a sleepy rural backwater. It is instructive to compare 2024/25 entrance/exit data for the Sudbury branch with the Felixstowe branch.

Sudbury 347903
Bures 53342
Chappel 32962
Total 434207

Felixstowe 278904
Trimley 57066
Derby Road 95046
Total 430616

A class 755 on the Sudbury branch is not a waste.

Theres quite a few Stadlers spare.
In the May 2026 timetable Greater Anglia made some useful first steps towards getting more use out of the class 755 fleet, including more trains for commuters working in Cambridge. Hopefully there is more to come.

Agreed. Some of the additional MFSO summer Yarmouth services have been cancelled recently due to a shortage of 755s. Only takes a few to be out of service for one reason or another to cause a shortfall nowadays.
