Apologies if this is in the wrong topic.

I was tracking the progress of 1H88 (Realtimetrains link) on traksy this morning - waiting to see it pass along the Edinburgh Suburban line. It reached Slateford platform 2 at approximately the right time (although this time has now been changed in RTT, it shows up on Traksy Traksy schedule link correctly).

After arriving at Craiglockhart Jn, it proceeded to shunt backwards over 232 points, into platform 1. After a short while, it then proceeded back down the sub, seemingly normally. I suppose this could be a fluke in the data, but given its arrival at Niddrie West Jn 28L, I'm intrigued by what seems like a very strange shunt move. I know it's fairly trivial, but if anyone could explain why this might happen, I'd be interested to hear.

There was an arrangement for a guest on board 1H88 to alight at Slateford to enable them to grab a taxi to Edinburgh Airport.
Nobody thought to tell the Driver! The reverse move then took place to allow the guest to alight. The initial delay mitigated by the scheduled stand time at Portobello Jn.

Thanks for letting me know! I'm quite impressed they managed to arrange this to happen during peak hours. Out of interest, how many people need to approve this sort of thing before it can happen? Obviously the signaller needs to know; I assume control for 1H88 (GBRf?) as well. It's probably a fairly infrequent move doing a reversal into P1 at Slateford - is the driver expected to know that to sign the route, or are they talked through it?

I'm assuming it was a VIP? Seeing as the train was on time prior to this it seems a very extreme move for a normal

Also looking at the path I see it arrived more less on time at Waverley, helped by nearly 30 minutes pathing stop at Portobello Junction.

That's seems an awfully long time to hold a passenger train so close to the station.

It's not a real passenger train though. It's a "holiday train" and the folk were probably finishing their breakfast.
