SMT Bus and Coach, Sheffield

This small business seems to have picked up a few Travel South Yorkshire contracts, including the short-term 195 service which is covering part of the 95 route due to a road closure, and a few local circular routes from Crystal Peaks formerly operated by TM Travel.

Does anyone know anything about them? I've never heard of them before, and it seems an odd time to try and get into commercial bus operations as a small business in South Yorkshire given a franchising model is soon to be introduced there.

"SMT" has different connotations in my part of the world and it was only when I clicked on the thread title that I realised that it was a Yorkshire operator that's being discussed.

Having looked at the company's About page, though, its logo bears more than a passing resemblance to its erstwhile Scottish namesake!

I thought exactly the same when I seen a post on Facebook of their Vehicles.

Definitely inspired by the SMT. Do we know what SMT stands for?

I believe the S in SMT is the initial of the owners surname and Ive been told hes a member of the enthusiast fraternity tho this is only heresay

Going through that website and the first Bus(pardon the pun :lol:) image I see looks like it came from Glasgow.

New company, one depot is near Hillsborough. 4 definate buses each ex First with dateless plates on them & a very smart livery

Looks like a YX09 E200 new to First West of England and an SN55 B7TL new to First in either Glasgow or Scotland East.

So many well meaning small operators start out this way - let’s just hope they don’t go the same way that many of them have!

The E200 is 44916 ex West of England then Solent & the B9TL is 37240, making a return to South Yorkshire after leaving for Glasgow in 2009.

37240/YN08 LCV also did a stint at West of England at my local depot before going fully electric. Glad it's still around and not bean cans!

Thread title updated to mitigate confusion with Scottish Motor Traction. Not being particularly familiar with the history of bus operations in Scotland, this hadn't occurred to me!

This is the main reason I'm curious about their future. Granted, the M services seem like contracts which would logically go to SMEs, so maybe SMT does have a place in the new franchising. I doubt the likes of Cawthornes or South Pennine Community Transport will be as lucky, though.

Peculiar to see that 12 months out from the launch of the SYPN, there will be 3 new commercial routes introduced across Sheffield and Rotherham, by newcomer SMT Bus and Coach.

Services 27, 43 and 63 will be introduced. 27 will operate from Rotherham to Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre, 43 will operate from Rotherham to Meadowhall Shopping Centre and 63 will operate from Sheffield to Crystal Peaks Shopping Centre.

Just looking at the livery, it seems to have a bit of 'Edinburgh' influence with the gold band on the lower panels. Lothian had a similar band until recently also on the lower panels.
