The incident happened on 17 July 2026 around 15:30 local time (GMT+2), near the town of Piwniczna-Zdrój, when several empty carriages came off the tracks and slid into the Poprad River, which on that stretch forms the border between Poland and Slovakia. There are no casualties, but the single-track line between Nowy Sącz and Slovakia remains closed.

Initial reports suggest that a maintenance crew reported a widening in the gauge at that location in the morning. "Track master" (sort of equivalent of a MOM) sent out to investigate, declares line safe with no issues identified. Train derails a few hours later.

In any case, an unprecedented train wreck. ➡️ In the morning hours, an EM120 Measurement Trolley conducting inspections and measurements of the track geometry on the Piwniczna - Wierchomla route on railway line number 96 detects widening and divergence of the rails in two locations. On site, the Track Master arrives, who does not find any irregularities in the measurements and does not introduce a speed restriction on the given section. After 3 PM, the derailment of 6 wagons of freight train 334012 from Muszyna to Kędzierzyn Koźle (ET43-016) occurs.
Traffic disruption is ongoing.
