German trains engineering works October

I am due to travel Cologne to Hannover and visit Berlin for the day. I booked it as the train journey from Hannover was quick go Berlin but it’s now upto 3 hours. Should I rebook or reroute somewhere else? Hamburg offers quicker connections but further from Cologne. I could do a full a u turn and book something else.

My other options are Paris Italy but looks too expensive. I looked at Strasbourg and also looked at Hamburg to Copenhagen. I am staying overnight each way in France for my Eurostar.

Where you should go is something no one can tell you because it depends on what your priorities are. Going on a day trip to Berlin from Cologne (or are you starting the day trip in Hanover?) suggests wanting to do a long train trip with a “tick box” destination at the end. There are plenty of places a lot closer worthy of a day trip (but I have no idea what floats your boat)

Only you can answer your question! I was in Cologne last month and visited Trier, Aachen, Worms and Speyer by train because they all have very interesting cathedrals. They were a big attraction for me. It might bore you rigid!

And Goslar, Wernigerode, Braunschweig, Quedlinburg are all worth a visit in conjunction with them.

I'd say Thale is worth a visit too with quite a few things to see such as the DDR Museum and a cable car (and old railway infrastructure with semaphore signals).

If you haven’t booked train tickets yet, and if Paris-Italy looks expensive, then maybe try using Interail Pass, as it offers flexibility and travel anywhere in Europe, and they start from just a few days, to multi weeks or even months. Though beware, TGV’s etc charge reservation fees which are compulsory, though Germany one can hop on and off trains, and reservation if choose use them are cheap. I would give this serious thought, as in my opinion Interail is good value for money and offers great flexibility to work around engineering works etc.
