It's literally the whole point of them arriving

Frees up the whole 158 fleet to go back to Bristol with some turbo's coming west.
That was the plan way back when they were creating those trimode things for the North Downs IIRC. The Turbos were supposed to go west to free up 158s to double up on the Cardiff - Pompeys.

Same now, the 175's replace the 158's in Devon and Cornwall, 158's go to Bristol for 4/5 car Portsmouth's, a couple of 150's go to Cornwall and I think one or two extra Turbo diagrams in the west.

This also gives a few extra turbo's in the central area for service enhancements around Bristol.

I like it! Looks rather smart on the 175.

If the 19 769s (4 car) had come into service it would have pushed 20 166s to Exeter (some are already based there) and Laira. Bristol would get the 158s and the 165s Reading don't need. Now 26 175s are coming to Laira. Six would cover Barnstaple and Okehampton, two Newquay. That leaves 18 trains to take over in varying lengths the HSTs (done) and the IETs doing local Penzance possibly from Taunton to take in Wellington and Cullumpton, Falmouth "metro", and still have a number of spares. 150s will ger some relief.
The diagrams as now means they will inevitably end up doing Paignton and Exmouth in the evenings.

The St Ives line seems to be a bit of a safe haven for 150s (along with Looe and Gunnislake) - unless there are any plans to get 175s cleared?
I don't see the point, 175s would be wasted on that branch. The branch is better off remaining 150 turf until a new fleet eventually replaces them.

The better Devon city
I've always thought of Class 175s as naturally ugly units but they seem to look pretty good in darker colours. I think the green wrapping around to the front looks very good on these.

You cannot expect 26 out of 26 trains in service everyday. 6 for Barny and Okey, yes, but the 175s will do a swap during the day so in essence you need more to run the service (well not really but trying to explain diagraming to some people is easier said than done). Even people such as @RPI have been through this and explained exactly what i have said above. I know for a fact certain people on here are much more clued up on what is going on than others realise ;)

Ive been through the cascade plan many times on here before, that plan may change slightly but as far as im aware, there is no long term plan to keep the 175s on the newquay branch when it links up with Falmouth.

The following was the cascade plan:

175s replace HSTs (binned off)

175s replace 150s on Okey which are released for mid cornwall metro

175s replace 158s on Barnys which are released for Pompey Cardiffs

175s replace 80x on Exeter Penzance which are released for mainline (Bristol Oxford)

158s replace 16x on Pompeys which are then released for Metro West Enhancements

Also to note there may also be a further 16x cascade plan.........

In theory, once all 175s are *reliably* in service, the Pompeys could really go to 8x4car 158 diagrams. That would involve splitting up the 3 car sets into 2 car sets again (bar 798). Whether that is what happens or not who knows, but then you would be guaranteed a 158 set on Pompeys, with turbos only taking over if needed.

175 wise tho, we need to get all the diagrams currently being run to be reliable. If they are not then what is the point in pushing forward? The more we overuse the limited pool we have, the more risk there is to cancellations and disruption for passengers. Everyone on here goes on about Barnstaple needing 5 coaches for the morning peak - yes, yes it does. But the bigger question is do we risk putting a 5 car on and potentially disrupting the line massively if something failed (in the short term) or do we soldier on through with what we have until such a time when we can reliably put new traction onto the route.

Lots more to think about than people realise!

That is basically what I said except for the detail around Bristol. With 26 trains there will be 5 or 6 spare. GWR only wanted 19 trains for Reading to make big improvements to the service elsewhere. I am all for the 175 but the breakdowns are very disheartning; and their seaworthiness is yet to be tested at Dawlish.

I feel like there isn't enough yellow on the front, if it wrapped around like it did when they were wearing the ATW livery, it might work better.

Looking good :p Even if it’s the only one so treated it’s nice to see they made it into GWR livery before nationalisation.

I think that I will have to give it the benefit of the doubt until I maybe see one for real !

I would like to think that they would repaint the side skirts also as when they haven`t in previous livery changes I thought it then spoilt the overall look with the poor looking side skirts.

I wonder if 2E28 will get past Newton Abbot. All trains stopped at Dawlish (4 in all), One at Dawlish Warren. I was going down to Paignton to see 175002/007

1C93 moved off 72 late . 2T34 still in platform, now moved off 78 late.

2E28 moved off 68 late
2Z30 cancelled to Paignton 2Z31 will start at Exeter to Exmouth.

Trespasser caused all the problems but good use at Newton Abbot and Exeter using the platforms to hold two trains.

Animals on the track was the announcement at Dawlish.
I was lucky as my Tqy to Daw. and return trip ro the cycling GP was either side of incidents time-wise.
I had wondered why I suddenly saw a plethora of trains passing by whilst there.

I had my my face firmly mashed into the air vent the other evening, I had to check the blue button was on ..... If I remember right Some 150s don't have aircon in the back cab yet.
I may be wrong, but could that be the Angel 3 (202/207/216). The native Porterbrook units had their cab desks replaced during the First Great Western refurbishment.

150207 came way later from Northern, way into the GWR franchise, 2018 I believe? So I'm not sure if that one did, it might have by now though, as it's now been refurbished twice under GWR.

Only seems 3 working today 007,111,114. No Newquay service and an IET doing a diagram that a 175 did all last week.

Haven't seen a 175 on Okehamptons in a while, I've got my fingers crossed for Wednesday ☺️ when I'm in the area.
