There seems to have been some reductions on the Birmingham to Leeds routes too compared to a few months back, aswell as a number of London services like the 401, 403, 440, 450, 560. Overall NX definitely seem to be cutting back except on the airport services as others have mentioned.
Quite a strange corridor to cut really, the rail competition is CrossCountry...

It does look like NatEx are shooting themselves in the foot. They don't carry the weight they once did with coach operators, Flixbus is on the scene and will likely scoop up former NatEx operators.

I wonder if Stagecoach Yorkshire will go for Flixbus or if the coaches will transfer elsewhere (Scotland?) once the contracts with NatEx expire.

I don't understand the obsession with Nat Exp not liking operators also operating Flixbus routes. If they don't operate the Flixbus routes, someone else will. Also, what is to stop, say Go North East, using their coaching subsidiary, as a separate company, running the Flixbus routes? Or, Go North East say setting up a separate company, Go North East Flixbus, to run the Flixbus routes from the same depot?

Stagecoach Yorkshire operate certain 131 journeys. Go North East operate the 133.

Is Edwards reducing their provision with NatEx then? They seem to operate quite a few services that are affected with reductions or withdrawals.

"Retailed third party operator" So First West of England's A1 service then. Also the 040 is probably the most profitable NatEx route, so something must have drastically happened for them to reduce the service offered. Whether that's flix/railway competition I do not know.

Possibly but looking at other reductions of services, quite a few of them are operated by Edwards Coaches so I wonder if Edwards is reducing their contract with NatEx.

Quite possibly, they do have a lot and it can be quite hard to manage no less than 4 depots

34 duties lost and Swansea depot looks to be closing.
Thats not good. I hope that the Swansea based staff can either find a position at Talbot Green depot, or can find alternative employment.

34 duties lost is a lot to lose as well given Edwards have just paid to take over over Parks Plymouth, and put more eggs into the National Express basket.

Highly unlikely to be true and extremely surprising if it is. Far more likely the 040 services are simply not planned and open for booking more than a few weeks hence. There are so many timetable changes on NX now, month after month, it is becoming extremely hard to reliably book more than a few weeks ahead without later getting an email to say your journey has changed, or the departure cancelled.
They will lose me for some travel if their timings cannot be relied on more than a few weeks in advance.

In Jan/Feb 2023 I booked a Manchester - Exeter - Truro - Bristol - London - Manchester holiday for June. I would not be confident to do something like that now if they chop and change their times often.

Has the second daily 590 been withdrawn? Only one daily 590 now which now goes via Manchester and Birmingham.

Probably - I'd proactively contact them personally. Probably they will contact you one week prior to travel and invite you to book on alternative service. The ticket section also has no 1300 bus

As the ex Customer Experience Manager of Milton Keynes Coachway I was surprised to see how the standards at the Coachway have slipped. Closes at 1700hrs so there is nowhere to shelter in bad weather, The ticket office is no longer open and the cafe is apparently terrible. How things have changed since it opened in 2010 when it was considered the showpiece coach station. I suppose all this is indicative of how NX has become,

The Nat Ex website has changed. It's a bit more mininal and cleaner. However, you can't seem to login when booking anymore to avoid the booking fee.
And now payment goes to "distribution technologies" - whatever that is....

Edit: After a few hours the old website is back again

Shame, NX becoming more like Flixbus. I guess offering something different is risky.

I didn't see the new site, but I have noticed on the 'old' site they have recently changed the way the booking fee is shown when logged out, I think probably as a result of regulatory changes to do with 'drip pricing'

Route One reports that the coach arm of National Express recorded a loss of £22.9m for the fifteen months to 31st March 2026 https://www.route-one.net/news/mobi...ss-uk-coach-arm-amid-global-trading-momentum/

Almost half of that (£11 million) occurred during the three months of 2026. Those losses compare to the £2m shown for the 15 months to March 2025.
Mobico says the reduction in UK coach revenue was due to increased competition leading to passenger volumes declining by 4.8% compared to the 15 months to March 2025.

Mobico has reported further losses for its National Express coach operations in the UK amid more positive results across the business globally, according to the group’s accounts for the 15 months ended 31 March.
Its UK coach arm posted an adjusted operating loss of £22.9 million for the accounting period, which was extended by three months to allow new auditors KPMG more time to complete its work. Almost half of that (£11 million) occurred during the three months of 2026.
Those losses compare to the £2m shown for the 15 months to March 2025, with the report showing full breakdowns for both periods.
The group as a whole, which provides coach, bus and rail services in Europe, the United States, North Africa, and the Middle East, reported adjusted revenue increasing by 5.9% to £3.42 billion and adjusted operating profit rising by 17.6% to £231m.
In the UK, the fortunes of the coaching business stood against a 14.3% reduction in profits to £2.4m for its bus operations, with revenue increasing 1.5% to £337.8m.

Mobico says the reduction in UK coach revenue was due to increased competition leading to passenger volumes declining by 4.8% compared to the 15 months to March 2025.
The competition was focused on “key intercity and airport routes”. It adds that the revenues for the period up to March 2025 benefited from network revenue and margins from rail disruption.
The 2026 figures include a circa £4m “legal claim provision covering legal costs, potential penalties for missed vehicle orders and disputed unpaid amounts owed by a supplier”.
Mobico says the amalgamation of the UK coach arm with its Spanish-headquartered division Alsa, which was announced in September 2025, was expected to deliver savings throughout the rest of this year. However, despite the “ongoing network optimisation and cost-efficiency programmes” that that brings, UK coach is expected to record losses again for the 2026 calendar year.
Commercial passenger volumes on National Express bus services “reduced in line with broader industry trends and macroeconomic headwinds”, according to Mobico.
Increased costs for UK bus were partially mitigated by an 8.6% fare increase implemented in June 2025, while adjusted operating profit benefited from £4.3m of property and land disposals in December 2025.
It adds that driver pay awards and the government’s increase in employer national insurance “outpaced revenue expansion and enhanced local authority network support”.
Ahead of Transport for West Midlands making its first contract awards for a bus franchising programme which is set to begin in late 2027, “the group continues to explore options to structurally de-risk the business and monetise its operational assets”. It adds that it “is leveraging Alsa’s extensive experience in running franchised bus networks to pursue new opportunities with a focus on sustainable returns”.
After Acocks Green depot and associated land were sold in December 2025, the “de-risking” process is also set to include a “commercial transfer of ZEV availability contracts, which currently incur an annual operating expenditure of approximately £20m”.
The group says it expects UK bus to break even in the 2026 calendar year.

Mobico increased its profit guidance across the global business, with Alsa’s coach and bus operations in Spain – which account for more than half of global group revenue – performing strongly.
Paco Iglesias, Group CEO, says: “Mobico has maintained its positive performance through the first quarter of 2026, driven by continued growth in Alsa and a resumption of full-service levels in Germany from the end of 2025. We are increasing our adjusted operating profit guidance for calendar year 2026 to £215m–£230m.
“Debt reduction remains the Board’s key priority; however, cash outflows associated with legacy liabilities continue to constrain our capacity to reduce net debt. We are working closely with our advisers to evaluate all our available strategic and financial options to accelerate leverage reduction, and expect to provide an update in the second half of the year.”

I’ve heard that the last day Stagecoach in Chesterfield will operate NX services has been moved forward to the 10th August, can anyone confirm this?

Well, that's one way of framing the considerable pruning of the network

Just had an email saying my National Express 426 service from Victoria Coach Station to Leeds at 12:30 on Tuesday 20th October is cancelled, no resson given, I'm invited to claim a refund or make a different reservation, which I have done, 12:00 from Victoria with the green coaches company

You missed this bit in your quote:

It begs the question, why cut routes (and generate uncertainty for forward custom) if you are going to end up still making a loss. Would it be better to try to expand your network so that overheads etc are spread over more customers, and economies of scale may be achieved? Cutting back tends to lead to only one conclusion. Flixbus are expanding, Ember are expanding, why not Nat Exp?

Slashing services leaves poorer choice and less flexibility for passengers to rebook, so they'll do the same as Mike99 and look elsewhere, never to return.
I'm astonished at some of the cuts. For example on some midweek days you cannot get from Birmingham to Bristol before lunchtime.
Liverpool passengers cannot go anywhere without travelling via Manchester.
Swansea/Cardiff to Birmingham is down to just two 'direct' journeys - one of them via Bristol - on certain days.
Stoke-on-Trent has just one coach per day each way. Cities the size of Peterborough, Chester, Salisbury and tourist hotspots like Stratford-upon-Avon are abandoned altogether. Nothing at all goes anywhere in North Wales.
I could go on, but it's just too depressing to see a once celebrated network destroyed like this.
The business has lost virtually all its British senior managers and directors. The new Spanish overlords clearly have very little interest in the UK and it would not surprise me in the slightest to see NX shut or offloaded within the next 3-4 years with Mobico leaving the UK and becoming a Spanish-registered company instead.

I've got a free return voucher to use up. But there is hardly anywhere on their network visiting for a day trip from Liverpool.

I stopped considering coaches entirely when I read about them cutting stops/toilet breaks - from the already tiny number that existed AIUI?

Everyone accepts the onboard toilet is just for emergencies. No guarantee it's working either. Coaches are already slow (and people accept they're slow) so why cut the breaks?

And the ones that still have stops, they don't even tell you. Bad marketing, bad service, blind to the competition. Just an awful proposition all around. £45-80 Glasgow to London, 8.5 hours overnight or 12 hours during the day? No thanks.

I only really use the coach now for shorter hops. The overnights to London are useful but have become expensive for what they are, both operators are guilty now.

The overnight service to Liverpool that has gone too, all that's left is the 421 via Manchester which departs Victoria at 02.00, & Liverpool at 01.45, the old 423 departed Liverpool between 23.30 & midnight & Victoria between 23.00 & 23.30 which was far more reasonable hour (trains ecc running at either end) for those who needed to connect to it.

National Express does have a being run down feel to it.
