An 04:10 train: off-peak AND a network railcard discount

So, two issues here.

#1 - I contend that the off peak single is valid for this train. All agree?




#2, that you can also use a Network card to obtain a discount on that service, as it departs before 04:29. (and I can reframe this as if we believe it is not valid "before" 10 am as when does "before" start? "before does not start at midnight, it starts at 04:30 - and if there is any debate around that, then what about the 23:46 or 01:20 ex STP (NRES provides discounts) versus the 04:56 ex STP (NRES does not) as the condition states "Network Railcard discount is not valid for travel from 04:30 – 09:59 Monday to Friday, excluding Public Holidays. Discounts apply to services in the Network Railcard area only (see network-railcard.co.uk/map)."


So if you are travelling both a) on a train timed to depart after midnight but before 04:29 (or after 09:30) you satisfy restriction code PX, AND b) depart before (or after) the window the Network card discount is not valid, you can obtain both discounts at once. Ergo this is valid on an 04:10 departure?

Yes, a Network Railcard discounted ticket with restriction code PX would be valid on a 04:10 departure. The Network Railcard conditions don't explicitly state that restrictions only start at 04:30 but it is clearly the intended position when looking at what is in the industry data feeds, and it is what journey planners will therefore offer in terms of tickets.

A different interpretation is that the Network Railcard is only valid on tickets dated the previous day (before 04:29), and tickets dated for the current day are only valid from 10

It's not really a matter of interpretation when journey planners will sell tickets for a 04:10 departure.

I had wondered about interaction with the "previous rail day" thing, but that would make buying a day return for a post midnight departure intending to come back that calendar day problematic. If the "rail day" was interpreted like that you would have to return in a couple of hours at most - destroying much of the utility of a day product.

I don't know which train the OP has in mind but a similar scenario exists with 04.23 Swanley to Victoria.

In this example the Off-Peak Single has the restriction code PW while the Off-Peak Return has the PX code.
