Doesn't come as a surprise for me; not a very popular service at all. Where did you hear this from by the way?
It shows up on the Traffic Commissioners’ local bus service registration data available via bustimes.org.
Specifically:

500 - Stoke Railway Station, Station Road, Stoke to Stoke Railway Station, Station Road, Stoke

Registration number PD1126532/17 Type Circular
Limited Stop Supported by subsidy? Yes
City of Stoke on Trent Council. Authorities Stoke-on-Trent City Council

Variation history

    • Received 1 Jun 26
    • Effective 18 Jul 26

    • Cancelled
https://bustimes.org/registrations/PD1126532/17

It strikes me that, as an hourly service (or half-hourly if you go the long way round on the opposite timing) it's not really much use. You arrive at the station when you arrive and have up to an hour to wait.

Nice to see Stantons gaining more tenders, a great company which deserves more praise.
Their constant VERY early running on the 500 suggests otherwise. Buses often running 10 minutes early because they can't be bothered waiting at timing points is all too common.

To be fair, the 500 is excessively padded. You could easily run a 35-40 minute service on a constant loop with 1 bus. That'd be much easier and save a lot of money. I'd also merge the 500 and 501 to be the same operator so then it's a consistent op through the day even with the route variation. But hey, council staff know best and we should all bow to their superiority.

I wonder if the Hanley - Market Drayton section will survive, as only Shrewsbury - Market Drayton is subsidised
I really hope it does still operate. There are plenty of people that want to go from Hanley or Newcastle to Drayton.

Does not the Shropshire news release referred to in post #1,004 above not say that the Council is taking on funding the whole route?

I similarly hope so. I feel like this section lost it's way because not only is it at the extreme end of the network and so unless the buses left Shrewsbury very early, or got back very late, you will always struggle to hit demand at the Stoke end of the route. Bar the few villages too, there is a lot of fields between Market Drayton and Newcastle. Then from Newcastle to Hanley you are relying on the distance passengers really because no one is going to use Arriva over First or D&G unless they already have a multi operator ticket but even then they are likely to stick to what is familiar and the bigger operators in the area.

I'd hope that the 64 does continue and hopefully D&G operate it with a half decent timetable. If they do take it on and run it half decent, it will help the route massively as people will see the 64 as more of an option on the Newcastle to Hanley section at least (ticket acceptance, familiar operator etc) and this may help it to carry better numbers. And if they market it right too for people going from Newcastle/Stoke to Market Drayton that could help get people going both ways rather than the current demand flows seemingly to be from Market Drayton towards Newcastle in the morning then return in the evening. Two way demand on rural sections will really help.

Does not the Shropshire news release referred to in post #1,004 above not say that the Council is taking on funding the whole route?
I read it as Shrewsbury to Market Drayton is kept. It wouldn't be appropriate for Shropshire Council to fund the Market Drayton to Stoke section as this section is almost entirely in Staffordshire and City of Stoke council areas.

Post #1044 refers to a news release by Shropshire County Council that it will be subsidising existing route 64 between Shrewsbury and Market Drayton, i.e. within Shropshire. The section of route 64 east of Market Drayton is almost entirely within Staffordshire, so it would primarily be the responsibility of Staffordshire County Council to subsidise this part of the current service if they wish to retain it.

One problem with the 64 is that it is operated from one end of a two-hour journey. There is a lot of dead mileage from Shrewsbury to Market Drayton in there. The Staffordshire end ceased to be much use when it dropped to such a low frequency (between four and seven journeys depending on how/where/when you count them). The first 'shopper' journey arrives into Newcastle at 1104.

As for how D & G will operate it, they operate the 340 (Whitchurch - Market Drayton - Wellington) from Adderley Green with a staff car* for driver swaps.

*when they can find a car, otherwise a bus does the trip!

The 64/X64 years ago was jointy run Midland Red/PMT then Arriva/First Potteries, which allowed more earlier /later journeys from Stoke-on-Trent.
One idea is aswell is D&G opening an outstation in Market Drayton Drayton/Shrewsbury area.
D&G also run the Whitchurch-Chester bus

That got me thinking as I thought the hourly service was a more modern development and that it was a two hourly affair and checking the Great British Timetable (thanks to Timetable World)...

1782064544206.png

I can't remember when it went hourly but suspect that it was probably around the time of Rural Bus Challenge funding?

Historically, it was two services with PMT 64 from Newcastle and Midland Red 928 from Shrewsbury. I assume it was some efficiency brought about in NBC days. Also, and I may well be wrong in this, but did Arriva take up the First workings when First got into trouble with the Traffic Commissioner and had their O license cut?

The two-hourly service was still in place in March 2004 (Overground timetable book) but had been introduced by (or in) January 2006 (Staffordshire CC Newcastle timetable book).

The licence cuts were implemented in May 2004 (324 to 160 but they had loads of spare, the real impact was much less) so that would be when Arriva took on the X64 journeys.

I think I mainly admire the fact that they often swoop in when other operators drop routes, and they genuinely seem like they care for the community.

Admittedly, my experience of the 500 stretches far as seeing their buses parked next to stoke sixth form waiting to start the route while the 25 and 9 etc have to wait on the road, though I rarely hear much else negative about them.

Before they left the area, Arriva allocated sapphire standard deckers to the 37/38 (well certainly 38), but you would get a Pulsar allocated to the 38 now & again, as for the frequency it's ok as it is, & has been that way for years.

Remember the 37 is every 30 minutes with the 31 between Winsford & Northwich, & every 30 minutes with the 38 between Sandbach & Crewe, so it's tricky to alter the frequencies without affecting the 31/37/38.

D&G could do with deckers for some of the routes, but doubt they will buy any.
The three Arriva double deckers 4489-4491 were taken off the 38 during Covid and never returned. Those three were delivered new for that route and were later refurbished to Sapphire standard. The last double deckers at D&G Bus were three DAF 250s that came when D&G repurchased the Wardle Transport operation at Longton from Arriva in May 2015.They mainly did football services and the 16 Hanley-Leek service.

== Doublepost prevention - post automatically merged: ==

Random question but have D&G ever tried to compete against First on the Crewe to Hanley corridor?
D&G do not go out of their way to compete with First Potteries. They have always added routes that First Potteries have dropped or reduced in frequency, and also gaining Council tendered work.A few years ago First Potteries stabled a handful of buses at the Crewe D&G Bus depot and they were washed and fuelled there for the early/late journeys on the Hanley-Crewe route.

D&G Bus ran on the 64 between Hanley and Market Drayton a few years ago to replace journeys after Arriva had cut the frequencies. They didnt last that long.....

I think D&G probably will open an outstation in Shrewsbury since they won a handful of local routes (20/23/26) and two interurban routes (64/558 to Montgomery)

I remember riding a Saphire Decker on the 38 when I visited Crewe during October 2020.

From what I saw when I visited the area in 2022 and early 2023, the 31 and 37 were operated with a mixture of Single and Double Deck vehicles whilst the 38 seemed to be mainly using Single Deck Pulsars with Mellor Stratas on the late evening journeys.

Thanks for this info about First Potteries/D&G. I was aware that First parked some buses in Crewe at one point . Would the drivers have overnighted in Crewe as well?

It does sound like D&G have a closer relationship with First than they did with Arriva or GHA. My understsanding was that in those two instances they were more in competition.

That sort of service filling in a few trips on a core interurban route will never work though without funding. People will always stick with the established operator and core timetable and ignore the infill trips.

As far as I know the PMT buses started and finished their duties from the D&G Depot at Crewe so assumed the drivers lived local. The last few Evora buses for D&G were delivered in white and were painted at PMT Adderley Green depot. D&G Bus staff passes can be used on First Potteries buses and vice versa so assume a good relationship between them.
The Mellor Strata buses were new to Macclesfield but soon moved on to Altrincham so it was obvious what was going to happen.I was surprised that after the Macclesfield and Winsford Arriva depot closures that they didnt run the C84 Chester-Crewe service from Chester.D&G were originally going to register the C84 but changed their mind after Stagecoach registered it.They then registered the 84X service between Crewe and Nantwich.

With not much in the way of notice, D&G fares have increased across a number of ticket types as of 1st July, with some ticket types being discontinued (Uttoxeter and 84X 10 Trip tickets). Frustratingly, the actual fares page has not been updated yet, so the new fares are only shown on https://www.dgbus.co.uk/news/changes-to-fares/ and some ticket types are not mentioned at all, despite Knutsford's fares being included on the page as "unchanged". Service 93 having special return fares is also on the new fares page.

Well that didn't last long!
The Newport Lane bus link project will open up a southern exit to the current dead-end Middleport area and hopefully recast the 94/98/99 into something more diverse and useful for the area.

There has been some investment in the company as I'm sure a fair few of you are aware! D&G Bus have now acquired 7 Optare Versas from Rosso which were used on the 464, it is unclear at this moment what services these buses will be used on but they will all be going to Longton depot for Stoke-On-Trent. There is also an odd one out Enviro 200 MMC from Moffat & Williamson, this one is also unclear as to where it is going but it will either be Crewe or Macclesfield depot, for those interested it also has a Voith gearbox.

We may see transfers/movement around the fleet and it is also unclear what all of these Versas are going to be replacing, I can only assume it will be the replacement for all of the TYB Versas and the older stuff like 170, 173 etc..

Thanks for taking your time to read, and I hope this helps some people

I notice some comments about the number of recent brand new and newer arrivals being a surprise. Remember D&G have a history of introducing both new and cascaded buses. The 13 reg Solo SRs were brand new for the Crewe area. The ex-Go Goodwins Solos and Enviros were still modern when they first arrived. What has changed is the number of vehicles D&G require in total, and that they didn't invest much during COVID or the subsequent years, so that explains why they need to invest more now.

Personally I find 3017 an interesting arrival, with it being a Slimline Solo but having a TransCymru style interior from its previous operator. A slimline version with a long distance interior feels like a bit of a contradiction.

I think Enviros 34, 35 and 38 must be near the end, given the rest from those batches have already gone. They also seem to be down to 3 of the Streetlite WFs that they acquired through the Bakerbus acquisition.

113 is currently an unusual one. I think it was a spare parts donor, it got repainted in the new livery and reintroduced in service, but it's not out that often. 27 has been given the new livery, so unless it urgently needed a repaint, I think they must have been planning to keep that one too.

34 is still a cracking bus, really quick. 35 and 38 not so much, 38 is still good though. 113 is extremely unreliable constantly breaking down and isn't the best hence why it's not out that often.

Those versas were returned to optare as they were leased apparently. There was 13 returned in total. The local paint shop is going to be busy

Winsford circular route W7 will be operated by D&G from September, with direct services to Middlewich and Sandbach

https://www.cheshirewestandchester....mprove-connections-across-the-town-and-beyond

Residents will benefit from longer operating hours, new Saturday journeys and improved links to the wider bus and rail network when the timetable changes are introduced for the Winsford circular bus service W7 operated by D&G Bus from 1 September.

Recent improvements to the Service 37 timetable have created an opportunity to introduce a revised Winsford Circular service on a 12-month trial basis. The revised service will operate hourly, passengers will benefit from a full range of enhancements including:

  • Extended operating hours from 7.17am to 5.38pm, compared with the current service operating between 9.40am and 2.15pm
  • Additional weekday journeys
  • The introduction of a Saturday service
  • Direct links to Winsford and Sandbach railway stations
  • Direct access to Sandbach and Middlewich town centres
  • Integrated daily, weekly and monthly tickets that can be used across D&G Bus services operating through Winsford, making it easier to connect with the wider bus network
The changes will provide residents with improved access to employment, shops, healthcare services and leisure opportunities throughout the day, while maintaining an important local bus service within the town.

The W7 service was previously operated by Stagecoach alongside a local school transport contract. Following changes to those arrangements, Cheshire West and Chester Council has been exploring alternative options to ensure residents continue to have access to a reliable local bus service.

Councillor Karen Shore, Deputy Leader of Cheshire West and Chester Council and Cabinet Member for Transport and Highways, said:
Starting quotation marks
We know how important good local bus services are to residents, helping people access work, education, healthcare, shops and leisure opportunities.

The revised service will operate hourly, with much longer operating hours, the new Saturday journey destinations will allow longer dwell times in Winsford Town Centre and provides better connections across the wider area including rail stations for onward travel.

By working closely with D&G Bus, we've identified a practical and cost-effective way to maintain and enhance a circular bus service for Winsford while delivering additional benefits for passengers. This approach makes better use of existing resources, provides improved links to rail services and neighbouring towns, and represents good value for money.

We're committed to supporting sustainable and accessible public transport, and this 12-month trial will help us understand how residents use the enhanced service while ensuring Winsford remains connected to the wider bus network.
Ending quotation marks
Cllr Shore
The service will deliver a number of wider benefits, including better integration with the existing bus network, easier-to-understand timetables and improved connections through Service 37 and the wider D&G Bus network.

That makes a lot of sense, since the Sandbach to Winsford only 37 services usually have more than 25 minutes downtime in Winsford and a full circuit of the W7 takes 25 minutes, so combining them to provide through services and for more of the day is a good idea.

I hope that the W7 takes off a bit more now as the frequency better matches the demand, plus the through links and enhanced operating hours.

Very surprised to see such a common sense approach. I'd like to say I hope CWAC and D&G have turned a corner, but I'm sure this is a one off.

D&G have applied to vary route 49 from 1 September now too

Good to see W7 integrate with the 37 - and sounds like Winsford-Sandbach increasing to half-hourly on Saturdays too. Hopefully it'll improve patronage and not require a subsidy after a year.

Any need for it to be a W7 why not kust give its old Arriva route number

Same with the N series Northwich Circulars
Just seems rather pointless
