Clapham Junction to Lancing, back from Amberley

Hi - I am walking in the South Downs on Saturday, the walk starts at Lancing station and finishes at Amberley station.

Travelling to/from Clapham Junction, what is the cheapest ticket for 1 adult (no railcard). I am guessing a day return to somewhere on the line between Hove and Littlehampton, but not sure where, and whether both the outward (via Hove) and the return (via Horsham) legs are valid on the same ticket?

I'm no expert on fares, but a query on Victoria <> Littlehampton using Southern's website gives options both direct (via Haywards Heath) and along the Arun Valley with a change at Barnham, so that seems good enough for me. In fact, there are Advances showing on the outward journey on both routes.

Enjoy your walk - the scenery's terrific up on the Downs and it's likely to merely hot rather than baking this weekend. If you don't manage to time your arrival just in time for a train, the Bridge Inn adjacent to Amberley Station has a fine beer garden.

Absolute cheapest would be Advances but presumably you want flexible tickets

Southern DaySave seems like the ticket https://www.southernrailway.com/tickets/daysave at £26:

Clapham-Ford is £37.30 for an Off-Peak Day Return, so quite a bit cheaper

This is all answered in the link provided above:

DaySave tickets can be purchased online through the Southern website and cannot be bought on the day of travel.

Instead, they must be bought at least:

Waiting at Amberley you'll think you're at the quintessential country halt. In the old days all you heard was the bird song and the block bells.

I completely agree. The Museum and Heritage Centre next to the station is also a wonderful place to visit. The actual village of Amberley, quite a distance from the station, is also worth visiting. It’s around 10 years since I was last in the area and is somewhere I must return to.
