Could have been worse. Tonight's Northbound Lumo seems to be running horribly late.Luckily we left around 35 minutes late heading to Glasgow.

Thank you for explaining. I'm surprised that something that boils water to move can in fact get too hot!In addition to potential fires, hot weather can affect steam locos directly. If the water in the tanks get too hot, the injectors will not work properly which means you can't get water into the boiler. We had such problems today and Wednesday on the Severn Valley with 7714 getting too hot.

In my experience, if the cause of a train being cancelled is an emergency speed restriction over very hot rails, the public are generally actually quite accommodating of that. There's a clear linkage between the problem and the consequences, and the outcome is obviously proportionate.Nice to see so many 'ossing about train cancellations. Would they still complain if their train ran over a heat affected rail and was possibly derailed?![]()
I think that the expression "dino juice" wasn't in fact intended to be taken literally.Yes, but Where Britain and the Middle East is now was at the Bottom of the Tethys Ocean, so even then the deposits wouldn’t be dinosaurs, more like trillions and trillions of tons of algae, with a few sea creatures such as ichthyosaurs which were NOT dinosaurs
Unfortunately that is Euston to a T.Was caught up in the WCML disruption this evening, Euston was an absolute disgrace, little to no information given and the staff that were visable couldn't have been any more unhelpful, I know Euston can be poor at times but tonight was the worst I've experienced in 20 years of rail travel, it's really put me off.
I certainly don't understand why the significantly reduced service on Monday...So, EMR have managed to run a half hourly service between Nottingham and Mansfield today and are running a full Sunday service tomorrow, yet can‘t even manage a few peak time trains to get people home from work on Monday afternoon. Hopefully, as the temperature in Nottinghamshire on Monday is currently forecast to be just 24C they will change their plans and run a full Monday timetable.
I was thinking the same thing. This feels like the worst week on the UK rail network for a very long time.
Agreed - I was waiting for the 1830 to Glasgow, and there were zero announcements about it until the platform was eventually announced at about 1855. Given the 1730 had already been cancelled (amongst many others), it was a bit of a scrum. Was caught up in the WCML disruption this evening, Euston was an absolute disgrace, little to no information given and the staff that were visable couldn't have been any more unhelpful, I know Euston can be poor at times but tonight was the worst I've experienced in 20 years of rail travel, it's really put me off.

The "train manager team" were fantastic with keeping us updated, right up until we got to Preston, 2 hours down, when they found out that we were being terminated there due to a lack of crew. They suggested the (very delayed) Lumo service which got in just behind us, and would have got me to Motherwell, and there was a fleet of taxis waiting, but I bailed and had a nice night in the Premier Inn.
This feels like the worst week on the GB rail network for a very long time. The wide spread, consistent nature and deep severity of the compounding issues on almost every line in England and Wales. Would it be overdramatic to say this feels worse than anything since the restrictions imposed after Hatfield?
It's also rather uncomfortable for the locomotive crew isn't it?In addition to potential fires, hot weather can affect steam locos directly. The only positive in all this is that EMR on X were incredibly helpful and prompt to reply. Much credit to that department - no cut and paste replies, and messages that showed an actual understanding of what you were asking.
What the public generally want is good communication, and support from staff to help ensure they get home. Very basic stuff. Why do some staff find it so hard?Nice to see so many 'ossing about train cancellations. Would they still complain if their train ran over a heat affected rail and was possibly derailed?![]()

Out of interest, I know that the '700s can climb the 1:27 gradients in the core, but how fast does half power get them on the main line?
Is there a source for this? Not sure where to put this.
Following the line side fire near Acton Bridge, is it true that Network Rail have put a (temporary) ban on steam haulage?
Rail News. 9th July. Up to today, there has not been any ban on steam trains on the National Railway.

I believe internally that that is sort of the case, they've gone to "black" fire risk a day early but were planning to do so tomorrow anyway. Is there a source for this?
The only thing I could find, based on a very quick search, was that a ban was not in place as of 9th July, and it's cooler today than it was then

I wouldn't be surprised, especially given that the forecasts show practically zero rain over much of the country until at least Wednesday (and even from Wednesday only over the south and south-west).I believe internally that that is sort of the case, they've gone to "black" fire risk a day early but were planning to do so tomorrow anyway.
QuiteWould at least need to be in light steam for the lubrication systems to work. Serious risk of bearing damage at speed if not. Which is disruptive and expensive!
I noticed that late running Lumo. I was lucky and got the 2005 Avanti from Carlisle to Glasgow. A few services were cancelled before and after ours. The service I was on north was very quiet.Agreed - I was waiting for the 1830 to Glasgow, and there were zero announcements about it until the platform was eventually announced at about 1855. You must have been lucky to get one starting north from Preston hence it being quietI noticed that late running Lumo. I was lucky and got the 2005 Avanti from Carlisle to Glasgow. A few services were cancelled before and after ours. The service I was on north was very quiet.
