Was caught up in the WCML disruption this evening, Euston was an absolute disgrace, little to no information given and the staff that were visable couldn't have been any more unhelpful, I know Euston can be poor at times but tonight was the worst I've experienced in 20 years of rail travel, it's really put me off.

In addition to potential fires, hot weather can affect steam locos directly. If the water in the tanks get too hot, the injectors will not work properly which means you can't get water into the boiler. We had such problems today and Wednesday on the Severn Valley with 7714 getting too hot.
Thank you for explaining. I'm surprised that something that boils water to move can in fact get too hot!

Surprises me that during a period of prelonged hot weather and low rainfall that we'd let something that spits out hot ash onto the nationa network.

Nice to see so many 'ossing about train cancellations. Would they still complain if their train ran over a heat affected rail and was possibly derailed? :s
In my experience, if the cause of a train being cancelled is an emergency speed restriction over very hot rails, the public are generally actually quite accommodating of that. There's a clear linkage between the problem and the consequences, and the outcome is obviously proportionate.

Generally the above hasn't been the problem, of course. It has been trains which are failing. An unrelated issue.

Yes, but Where Britain and the Middle East is now was at the Bottom of the Tethys Ocean, so even then the deposits wouldn’t be dinosaurs, more like trillions and trillions of tons of algae, with a few sea creatures such as ichthyosaurs which were NOT dinosaurs
I think that the expression "dino juice" wasn't in fact intended to be taken literally.

Unfortunately that is Euston to a T.

This feels like the worst week on the GB rail network for a very long time. The wide spread, consistent nature and deep severity of the compounding issues on almost every line in England and Wales. Would it be overdramatic to say this feels worse than anything since the restrictions imposed after Hatfield?

So, EMR have managed to run a half hourly service between Nottingham and Mansfield today and are running a full Sunday service tomorrow, yet can‘t even manage a few peak time trains to get people home from work on Monday afternoon. Hopefully, as the temperature in Nottinghamshire on Monday is currently forecast to be just 24C they will change their plans and run a full Monday timetable.
I certainly don't understand why the significantly reduced service on Monday...

Agreed - I was waiting for the 1830 to Glasgow, and there were zero announcements about it until the platform was eventually announced at about 1855. Given the 1730 had already been cancelled (amongst many others), it was a bit of a scrum.

The "train manager team" were fantastic with keeping us updated, right up until we got to Preston, 2 hours down, when they found out that we were being terminated there due to a lack of crew. They suggested the (very delayed) Lumo service which got in just behind us, and would have got me to Motherwell, and there was a fleet of taxis waiting, but I bailed and had a nice night in the Premier Inn.

I was waiting next to the 2031 to Preston behind the barriers with about 50 others for around 45 minutes, then there was the announcement to say it was cancelled due to a lineside fire and that was it, the first person I spoke to was an Avanti guy in the ticket office area who was surrounded by people asking him about the Preston train and his blanket response was get the Manchester train with little regard to intermediate stops, I then spoke to 3 separate members of the Euston NR staff who hadn't got a clue where Tamworth or Lichfield was and all of them just told me to keep checking the departure boards, not understanding that the 2031 was the last train of the night...

I get things go wrong and yesterday was a bad day all round, but what really wound me up was the total lack of information or communication, it was disgraceful and when speaking to staff, the impression I got was that I knew more than them!

I'm glad I made the judgement call to to get on the Manchester service and get off at Stafford, the team at Stafford were some of the nicest and most helpful staff I've met, a real credit to the railway.

It's certainly been an awful week and one to forget!

It's also rather uncomfortable for the locomotive crew isn't it?

We'd been keeping an eye on the EMR situation all day, as we needed to get back from St Pancras to Chesterfield.

Originally, only the 14:02 and 19:02 were cancelled.

At lunchtime I checked, and the list had increased to the 15:02, 16:32, 20:02 and 20:32, with the 18:32 reduced to only 5 cars. This was later also shown as being cancelled.

We ended up giving up on St Pancras due to the numbers waiting to travel meaning there was no chance we'd even get on a train, never mind get a seat. Trains on the ECML seemed to be running well and weren't overly busy, but we got caught out at Doncaster as the driver of the Northern we intended to get to Sheffield ran out of hours. (Oddly, RTT says a problem with the signalling system, but it was shown as being cancelled from Doncaster onwards well in advance which suggests the reason we were given seems more likely)

In the end, it looks like the 18:32, 20:02 and 20:32 which had been advised as being cancelled did run. The 15:32 and 18:02 were cancelled in addition though.

Actually, from 18:32 onwards everything on the Sheffield line did seem to run, although the last two trains of the day were delayed. Between 14:00 and then however, only four out of 9 ran, three of them heavily delayed with the 17:32 terminated short at Chesterfield.

The only positive in all this is that EMR on X were incredibly helpful and prompt to reply. Much credit to that department - no cut and paste replies, and messages that showed an actual understanding of what you were asking.

Good to hear, I messaged Avanti on social media to ask there advice last night, I was passing Watford In by the time they replied and advised I head towards Birmingham and seek assistance from there.

What the public generally want is good communication, and support from staff to help ensure they get home. Very basic stuff. Why do some staff find it so hard?

Agreed, my experience at Euston last night cohld have been a lot better if there was some sort of communication, but there wasn't anything at all and I had to work things out for my self and take a chance...

I get staff dont always have the answers themselves but the impression I got last night was that they simply didn't care and that just isn't acceptable.

I was honestly disgusted at how things were handled.

Out of interest, I know that the '700s can climb the 1:27 gradients in the core, but how fast does half power get them on the main line?

100mph. Albeit takes them a bit longer to get there! A 700 on half power is slightly better than a 4REP+8TC in power to weight terms. Or for those who prefer, broadly equivalent to a Deltic + 9.

Not sure where to put this.
Following the line side fire near Acton Bridge, is it true that Network Rail have put a (temporary) ban on steam haulage?

Is there a source for this?

The only thing I could find, based on a very quick search, was that a ban was not in place as of 9th July, and it's cooler today than it was then

Rail News. 9th July. Up to today, there has not been any ban on steam trains on the National Railway.

Haven't heard that but fingers crossed it's correct.

I believe internally that that is sort of the case, they've gone to "black" fire risk a day early but were planning to do so tomorrow anyway.

I'm afraid my only source was comments made by a couple of Steam-related YouTube videos. That is why I asked the question, hoping that someone more knowledgeable might know the answer.

I wouldn't be surprised, especially given that the forecasts show practically zero rain over much of the country until at least Wednesday (and even from Wednesday only over the south and south-west).

Mind you I've just seen a the videos of the tour with 34028 yesterday and on all if not most, 47802 is doing the majority of the work.

Would at least need to be in light steam for the lubrication systems to work. Serious risk of bearing damage at speed if not. Which is disruptive and expensive!

Light steam often is allowed. I'm not sure if it is on so-called Black days, mind. It's also more to do with moisture deficit than actual air temperature, I think.

WCML mini meltdown underway right now, with lots of 30-45min+ delays due to damage of the overhead or a track safety inspection depending on which train I look at. Notable that this barely mentions a warning on Avanti or National Rail site. Manage to board my Avero well ahead of the rush, thank god for RTT and Traksy, as inevitably the seat reservations aren't working on a crush loaded train.

I genuinely can't think of a service or business I use that is worse at providing information than the Railway.

I noticed that late running Lumo. I was lucky and got the 2005 Avanti from Carlisle to Glasgow. A few services were cancelled before and after ours. The service I was on north was very quiet.

You must have been lucky to get one starting north from Preston hence it being quiet :)

A large fire has broken out next to the Weaver line (London Overground) near Wood Street station in Walthamstow. Services suspended while the fire service tackle it.
