What’s the furthest a member of staff can be overcarried one stop?

I’ve heard stories of staff members at Reading getting on a train (presumably doing a passenger assist) and ending up in Taunton as they haven’t been able to get off the train in time before the doors closed. I also seem to recall watching a railway documentary series a few years ago and someone from Kings Cross ending up in Grantham.

So my questions are:
- What’s the furthest known case of someone being overcarried?
- What’s the furthest someone could accidentally be overcarried by one stop (I think Kings Cross to York could be a contender)?
- Does anyone know of any cases where that member of staff being unavailable has then caused major issues?

Manchester to Leicester was the furthest I ever heard of.

Also Manchester to Cardiff, but not really an over carry that one, more someone misunderstanding the job of customer care assistant (first day), and thinking you travelled with the person to their destination before helping them off...

My other half went Stockport-Leicester by mistake during Operation Rio. He got confused and got on totally the wrong train! His American accent probably helped persuade the ticket inspector not to charge him for the trip.

I would have thought Preston to London non-stop might be up there.

I remember someone who i knew there in the 1990s said passengers had ended up on a train to London by mistake.

This was pre-privatisation, and my pal was travelling to London on his PRIV when passengers in his carriage realised what was happening and panicked.

Not sure about staff though. Is it only the sleeper that goes non-stop nowadays?

I and a colleague were doing some tests on refurbished coaches from Carnforth to Manchester where there was supposed to be a crew change... I don't know how they did it, but it was first stop Peterborough Yard - and quite a long trudge along the track to the station with all our kit. I remember it was a boiling hot day, and that we got to the station bar at 1605 - 5 minutes after it closed - which seems improbable, but it has stuck!

Yup, that was the Manchester - Leicester one, except weekend diversion via New Mills so no Stockport stop to jump off at.

There have always been rumours that certain members of staff would accidentally on purpose get themselves overcarried so they can have a nice break!

I was on a train years ago when exactly that happened. A member of staff was helping a blind passenger + dog find her seat at Preston when the train set off - next stop Euston. It was during Virgin's tenure on the route and pre-Pendolino

In 2015 the 06:12 from Leamington was non-stop to Marylebone and i am sure Snow Hill Conductors used to sometimes travel pass to Leamington on it.

I was once, pre Pendolino I should add, on an evening service from London Euston which was first stop Wilmslow - I didn’t live in Wilmslow at the time but it was still a good service to go home to Manchester on.

Not staff, mind you, but some friends or relatives of a passenger got on on the basis that “all trains stop at Watford Junction”.
Sadly for me, because it delayed me, a special stop order to chuck them out at Rugby was arranged.

Maybe today they’d have been sent to Wilmslow and charged for the privilege?

On the Kings Cross 24/7 TV show, a staff member got stuck on a Hull Trains service while helping a passenger on, which was first stop Grantham.

I wonder if anyone's ever been overcarried to Lille or Paris on a Eurostar? That'd be a difficult one to explain!

I have (unseriously) considered this when rushing some lost property back to a passenger who was on a train about to leave. I'd like the extra break but I don't fancy having to explain to my supervisor why I was on a train in the first place. The passenger's attention was grabbed from the doorway as they were conveniently in the vestibule, and the item was safely handed back without any paperwork :)

LNER - Edinburgh to Newcastle and vv, York to London and vv, although depending how critical the member of staff was I imagine a stop order maybe placed for a station to allow them to return.

Given Eurostar’s boarding procedure, I highly doubt it. But if it is theoretically possible, what was the furthest first stop when E* still ran to the South of France…?

Not quite as extreme but ever since LNER introduced their KX - Harrogate service if I had a pound for the amount of passengers boarding the service at Leeds expecting to be going to London only to end up at Bettys Tea Rooms instead I would have some decent pocket money :D

Coincidentally I was on a Rio service in the other direction when someone was on wanting Stansted Airport (from Leicester). As you say, next stop Stockport - and presumably a missed flight.

Taunton is trumped by Exeter St Davids from Reading (a Penzance service). I've noticed assistance staff on plat 7 making sure the dispatchers have seen them getting on.

I’ve accidentally carried cleaning staff to Temple Mills depot before, but never Paris

It's the answer to a different question, but I think the longest stretch of track without stations appears to be the 47.8 miles from Lockerbie to Carstairs.

It's a long time ago (early 60s) but my dad, who was busy loading mail on to the daily branch goods to West Kirby, was accidently carried from Hooton all the way to Hadlow Road - 1.5 miles! He came back on the bus.

Going back to the Caledonian Sleeper example, don't sleepers have enough buffer time, and other services perhaps being infrequent enough at those times of day, that earlier stops could be made for railway workers accidentally on board?

Theoretically one could manage Exeter St Davids from Paddington, on the 12.03 (first stop St Davids, pick-up only!) - two hours exactly. I'm fairly sure you can't beat Kings Cross-Newcastle though.

only (nowadays) if the train is platformed...

the Lowlander's fast from Watford Junction to Carlisle.
calls at Preston Platform 4 0336 to 0350 "for staffing reasons", last night sat there from 0242(!) to 0410... Having left early and gained time all the way... Preston driver going home?

Oh dear LOL. Now that would qualify as a Premier service

Reminds me of my job as a paperboy and I misunderstood what my manager said about delivering to a huge block of flats. I erred on the side of caution and managed to confuse and annoy about 120 residents. Scorching hot day, no lifts. Should have seen her face.

Providing it was at a station where they could easily get a return train! No point dropping them off at a small halt somewhere :D

Well obviously! That would be looked at in the decision making.

I’ve been on a Grand Central non stop King’s Cross to York that has stoped at Stevenage to let someone off who’d boarded the wrong train. On Thursday, a bunch of Chinese tourists without any English tried to evict a tables worth of passengers on a Sunderland service at York, pointing to their phones which were displaying tickets to Kings Cross. Cue lots of head shaking and pointing at the platform from the Mackems on board. Fortunately they got the message just in time to avoid a trip to Thirsk
