Both 31s arrived at Strawberry Hill but one one left with the 4vep.

It appears 31120 got left behind.

Interesting. Do we know if that's the loco that suffered the brake fault yesterday? I see 5Z31 has just cleared Clapham. Hopefully it sticks to the path, as I intend to visit Eastleigh later to catch it.

Yes. Now left at Strawberry Hill and won’t be attending - so I presume 128 will now run in its place. Given 210 suffered a brake (I’ve seen many comments stating it has a Break fault which is somewhat ironic) fault only a few weekends back, it did seem like quite a push to get it ready for this weekend.

I have to say I’m rather undecided about attending this year, with the lineup being somewhat last minute and 56/60 only running Saturday / Sunday, it’s taken something away from the draw of attending on the Friday for me.

Add in to that, with the 56 and 60 being on the 4DING unit with the temperatures forecast, that is going to be utterly rancid. VEPs always were (particularly) rancid in hot weather.

Yes 31210 was suffering some kind of brake issues at the KWVR gala with grease being applied to the parts of the bogie( cylinders) l presume we're operating the brakes?
Seemed to have solved the problem at the time.

I have seen the following statement - I do not know its origin:

31210 will not be attending the MHR gala. I am sorry to inform you that locomotive 31210 will not be attending the MHR gala. As a precaution, the locomotive will remain at Strawberry Hill to allow for the investigation of a possible defect over the weekend. In light of the exceptionally high temperatures, the operational significance of the air brake coaching stock to the event, and the requirement to travel over some of the busiest sections of railway in the South to get there, proceeding with the movement was determined to present an unnecessary operational risk

Just re-watched the video I was sent earlier of the 31s arriving at Strawberry Hill and 31210 seemed to do a fair bit of rocking back and forth when they stopped.

EDIT: Updated the loco number.

It's 210 not 120

I'm glad 31120 is cleared up... I thought this was a phoenix from the flame/heat resurrection.

So are we saying both 31210 and 128 will not be attending tomorrow?

One possible explanation: Ordinarily if you have coupled locos the train brake is used to brake the whole consist. If the straight air brake is used, only the driven loco would brake and anything else would behave much like a loose coupled freight. It’d be safe of course as the brake pipes would be coupled.

From what I’ve read:

31210 remains at Strawberry Hill C.S.D for repairs
31128 will stay at Watercress Line for static viewing but isn’t allowed to be used.

(I may be incorrect!)

Very decent day at the MHR gala.. a rescheduled timetable sadly without 31128 working.

For those going tomorrow and Sunday , beware of the MK1 inferno baking stock, truly intense heat most of the day.

Good to have 66613 making an appearance.

Was it busy, this weather in a MK1 or any other type of coach would put me off.

Not too busy.. the VEP always seemed quite full, the sprinter was sparse, the Mk 1's had enough seating across the timetable

I envisage tomorrow will be well attended even with the current heatwave.

We too had a good day, the VEP was very busy whenever we saw it (only did a one station hop on it).

It appeared to be well attended (not been in previous years so have nothing to compare it to) even with the heat.
