Waterloo to Hampton Court

I got the train direct from Waterloo to Hampton Court today. I tapped in at Waterloo using my Oyster Card and tapped out at Hampton Court.

When the train was coming into Surbiton I was confused to hear an announcement saying that Oyster is not valid beyond Surbiton. The announcement was repeated after leaving Surbiton.

I take it this is an error? I'm pretty sure that I can use Oyster for this journey, but wanted to post here in case I am mistaken. I don't want a penalty fare in the future!

I suspect some kind of PMS confusion since your train was bound for the Hampton Court branch anyways

It is fully valid as HC is in Z6

On a train going outside the zones that message would apply and be valid that neither contactless nor oyster is accepted after Subiton

Well the map says it is zone 6 and the fares finder says Oyster is OK, so yes it is an error, but in fact all other country routes out of Surbiton are outside the zones beyond Surbiton.

Got the same message a week ago on the same route - had a quick panic Google search to check my understanding!

I commute from THD, and the 701s bound for Hampton Court regularly announce at Surbiton that Oyster and contactless is not valid beyond Surbiton. Only ever at Surbiton. Conclusion: just one more minor bit of ineptitude associated with the introduction of the 701s.
