Hi. in September l am going on the above trip. l will go up on a Sunday and return the following Saturday. At the moment l plan to get advanced tickets to Manchester Pic and back with Cross Country. Then advance tickets with Trans Pennine to Edinburgh and use a weekend upgrade to first class on the later (if seats are available). Has anyone used the upgrade on TP and was it worth it. Any other suggestions for route and fares would be appreciated

Is there a reason you aren't looking for bespoke splits from places like the forum site?

I would not touch either TPE or XC on a Sunday, the first thing I'd be doing is looking at Easyjet who fly the route direct in a little over an hour.

I wouldn't touch XC at any time.

I think Bristol to Edinburgh is valid via London. Might be worth checking via the forum site.

The non-advance fare options are “not via London” or “+LUMO and GWR”. There is no other fare via London regardless of the routeing guide.

I would personally go via London, probably on advance tickets, noting that for most of the day the minimum connection time Paddington-King’s Cross is 45 minutes.

I've done this trip and similar in the opposite direction often enough. Edinburgh to Birmingham via Carlisle, then a short hop to bristol. No brainer. Advances probably with avanti. My 2nd choice would be via London but it feels longer.

Southern will sell advances via LNER and Lumo for this journey on a sample Sat and Sun in Sept with minimal differences in price. On average an hour longer than Brum

I agree. It's not just unreliability. It's that their trains are curiously consistently so stuffy and unpleasant to be in for long periods, for reasons I can't quite explain.
