In addition to getting confused by TPE’s website for getting to Edinburgh, I’ve been looking at Edinburgh to Glasgow fares. It seems you can’t actually buy a 1st class return ticket. I can see 1st Advance singles, and I can see you can upgrade for £5 on the train if it has 1st accommodation. It just struck me as odd that you can’t buy the ticket online before you travel. Is this possibly to avoid arguments when you get on a service without 1st?

A walk-up Anytime Day Return (1st class) between Edinburgh and Glasgow Cen/QSt should be £23.30. No railcard discounts normally ever available though, for tickets for 1st class travel, for 16-25 railcard holders, other than if buying 1st class advances.
Ah, sorry, I'm with you now. There are no period returns available in the fares database. Only day returns. On a lot of shorter journeys period returns aren't available. This is mostly to try and prevent reusing tickets as a make shift season ticket.

Seems that whilst (Period) Returns are available for Standard class travel between Edinburgh and Glasgow, for First Class, it's only Day Returns (or Singles, each way, if returning another day).

Scotrail seems to have odd views about 1st class. Their rovers are standard only. You’d imagine that they could make a chunk of extra revenue from tourists willing to pay top wack. I realise that not all services convey 1st, but that’s easily solved with a “where available “ clause.See my later message
Period returns used not to exist for this flow. They were introduced by ScotRail (in standard class only) a few years ago. Perhaps the omission of a first class fare was deliberate?
Another way to do this is just buy the period return and pay for the £5 upgrade each way per person on the train.

I can't think of any rovers that are valid for 1st class except the All Line Rover. Aside from, arguably, a London Travelcard.
Though the Spirit of Scotland is basically a Scottish ALR, and people will be travelling up and between the Highlands and the Central Belt with them, so there probably would be some demand for 1st class. But then how do you price it? Too high, and the day (at least) that most users of that ticket would likely spent on the West Highland Line feels like poor value due to the lack of 1st class.
Prrice it too low and LNER will probably kick off as their 1st class carriages will be even busier.
Just price it with the normal first class differentials. If you feel it is poor value don’t buy it. But at the moment its impossible to buy it.
I'm not sure there are "normal First Class differentials". Some First Class fares are around 40% more than standard, others 3 times the price.
Given the relative paucity of First services in Scotland the Scotrail buy up on the day programme seems the right solution, especially as there is a big difference between the three Scotrail offerings, LNER and Cross Country.
