The unpaid fares desk at Manchester Victoria has been rebranded the opposite way

From bland black and white rail alphabet style to Northern’s in house style, as shown here

A little odd considering the way things are going, but I can't even blame them. What a terrible desk. To be fair, the sign seems fine on the old one, but everything else is dreadful. How do you even find a desk so... nasty?

This does make me think of the way GBR's design identity is being applied so far. For signs, the black and white with red accent is fine, but for things like this, it seems like maybe more consideration/clarity over GBR's brand colours is needed. Navy (and quite a smart shade of it!) is one of their key colours and it would've worked on something like this.

Noticed a number of the signs have started appearing in Paddington, full enamel with red sides as outlined in the more developed style guide, and they look good.

Noticed today some of the platform signs at Manchester Victoria now have the northern ‘n’ logo on the right hand side instead of the expected Bee network logo.
So that means they've put a sticker over a cover patch, over a sticker?! Sounds about right really!

I never understood why the Hexabee was covered over in the first place as they are visible on the new signage recently fitted at Deansgate...

I noticed this too in the last few weeks, I noticed the signages had covered over something that used to be there and couldn't remember what it used to be, then I saw one signage that wasn't covered and it was indeed the Bee Network logo.

Then recently I saw they replaced it with the Northern 'N' logo. What would be the reason behind it when Deansgate and Manchester Oxford Road show the Bee Network symbol? Isn't Bee Network Rail going to start in the next year or so?

On that note, Salford Central had the TfGM 'M' logo on the station signages but these appear to have been completely removed.

You would think they wouldn't be inconsistent with each other.

Weirdly, Salford Central is the outlier. So it was done with RA2 before they started the major works on the station, then upon completion, it was resigned using the newly released Wayfinding Version 3 manual and is at present the only one so treated! They then did Victoria with the strange (and completely unnecessary) grey boardering and then the same with Deansgate... but as to why Victoria has suddenly been plagued with "n"s might have sth to do with Alex Hornby, who recently showed off on his Twitter feed a brand new desk for exchanging IOUs, completely bedecked in Northern purple and branding... Admittedly, the previous desk looked like it had been knocked up at 3pm on a Friday out some scrap from the bins but the signage was RA2 and thus "in keeping" with the new style... but hey ho...

Mostly Glasgow-ish. Mostly.

Using diamond plate for a bit of customer-facing service infrastructure stinks of cheap and unwelcoming. Northern absolutely made the right choice.

Except whilst trying to integrate the railway into one cohesive unit, it isn't

At this stage I don't care. This thread was started five years ago and it's fair to say the integration is dragging more than a little. In these sorts of situations just give customers something approachable and friendly now while waiting for the station signage replacements to properly take, if they take at all.

Alex Hornby tweeted positively about the new GBR livery today. For the sake of his career he likes it, but I can imagine inside he hates the whole concept considering how his whole career has been based around localised branding under his control.

See also the new ticket desk at Victoria, the recently introduced Northern network map and leaflet, the new Northern Rover that is coming out…

Hornby has always tended towards Best Impressions for his publicity material though. Is it possible that he might manage to get GBR to give Stenning some business too?

Too expensive surely given the livery has been done inhouse??

I'll bet he does...

(My bold) whilst this is great, it is surely the wrong time for all this? Northern will be swept aside by GBR and partly Bee Network (though I noticed Andy Burnham recently saying he wanted rail at arms length from the Bee Network or similar?!) so seems like a waste of time and effort and brings me back to my original point where things are meant to be heading in the same direction, no matter how slow...

Given the annual budget of the railways even using a design house as expensive as Best Impressions would amount to peanuts.

Not that I'm suggesting Best Impressions. Plenty of other brand designers out there.

True but I think my mind was harking to another thread about "wastes of public money on the railway"

Say what you like about Best Impressions, they wouldn’t have come up with station signs that are black laters on a plain white background. They did London Midland I believe amongst others, and it all tied together well.

Randomly Gipsy Hill station in South London seems to have been now done. I believe this was the first station to gain Connex Livery, back in the day.

Interesting. Maybe the signage needed updating anyway? I wonder how long signage lasts before it needs a replacement/update (if there's even a time limit - some BR era signs are still at decently major stations). That would also explain Euston being entirely redone when other stations would've made more sense to be overhauled.

If it's "GBR official" font/alphabet, then Blackheath in SE London has had new signage for some time now
Yeah, it looks more classic style, possibly ser like? It looks great, and would fit well on a heritage line! I was impressed when I first saw it, as the station really needed lots of patchwork. (A great refurbishment, but off topic!) Still better than the other new signage, which I feel could do with more colour and style in their lettering while still looking bold and simple but effective.

Pershore on the Cotswold Line has been GWR RA2’d. It must have been in the past week as it still had First Great Western and Helvetica signage on my commute last Friday.

Looks like we’ve got another interpretation at Cambridge South. Thicker font, arrows and train symbols for platforms.

Shown at 0:34 onwards

That doesn't look at all bad to be honest. It deals with the spindly arrows and the overuse of the BR symbol to mean "trains" rather than "the railway".

Looks good. NR/GBR Wayfinding guidance version 4 impending?

edit: rewatched and compared with NR Wayfinding guidance v3. It's just the guidance done properly. The lack of double arrows on the signs is what's meant to happen - the Rail Symbol 2 is meant to only appear on running in boards (platform signs at the ends of the platform), like done at Euston.

I took a few (poor) photos on opening day. It's a major improvement - not exactly great, but not as maddening as some earlier applications.

I believe this is an updated version that will replace V3. The symbols, font (RA3), design of the sign itself (note the loss of the red inserts) and layouts are all completely different.

Looking at the images, it seems you're right. RA3, though? Not another one!

I know, another style. Apparently they have "tweaked" RA2 (the hook on the lower case l for instance) for accessibility reasons.
Although I do find it jarring that the lower case l and fs are taller than the upper case P...

Also, this is the first station (I think) decked out with the typeface in a heavier weight. With that and the layout of the boards (stacked text and arrows [also heavier than previous], rather than the single arrow of WF V3) it does look like someone was thumbing through the original BR design guide and imported some of it across...
