The Jacobite finally left Mallaig at 2218, instead of 1700 as booked.

Was it carrying passengers or empty stock? Presumably the passengers were bussed back to Fort William.

It would still be light then! Sunset was only a few minutes before then, and the sun only gets a few degrees below the horizon.
It ran as a class 2 (ordinary passenger) rather than empty coaching stock (ECS), which suggests it still carried passengers. Would be nice if someone could confirm.

Do you know which 37 is paired with which set? Particularly the morning set (yesterday) which ran behind 45407?
I don't expect the 37s to run with the steam locos: the train is on length limit as it is (adding another loco means removing a coach which means less revenue) and they are non ETS 37s so wouldn't offer anything beyond a helpful shove.
They will be there in case of steam failure or ban, which often happens in dry spells.

There was absolutely a 37 on the back of the morning service yesterday both ways; I got a photo of it on the blocks at Mallaig after they swapped the locos around, but only noticed afterwards that it doesn’t carry any number on the front. Interestingly, there wasn’t one on the back of the afternoon service when we passed it at Arisaig. It looked like the compartment Mk1 was the trailing vehicle on that service.

According to Railcam, today was 45407 and 37518 on the morning, and 44871 (solo?) on the Afternoon.
Yesterday it was 44871 morning with no diesel allocated and noone had added the afternoon engine into RC.

Thank you both - sounds like I should keep an eye on Flickr/Instagram etc to see whether anyone got a shot of the consist with running numbers. From my photos I know that 45407 was on the head of the morning service (15–Jun). That’ll teach me not to double-check at the time!

It didn't run at all on Friday. Unfortunately I'm now home from Essan so missed seeing today's recovery.
Does anybody know why, seemingly according to RailAdvent, that an ECS move hauled by steam is coming back from Fort William on Friday? Surely bold to just leave one of the Black 5's in Scotland

Looking in RTT they appear to have some sort of charter heading up from Carlisle on Saturday, with their bubble car running out to Glenfinnan and back, which may be Friday's ECS (though the move appears planned as a diesel rather than DMU)

A small small part of me wondered if they were taking some MK2s back to Carnforth and replacing them with MK1s.The chairmans train is on a 4 day jolly. Railway Herald (railtours) has a neat summary.

“Apparently, West Coast Railways is waiting for a derogation from the Office of Road and Rail to allow WCR to use Mk.1 stock, whilst a programme of fitting central door locking is implemented. (This has already commenced.) When the derogation will be forthcoming is not yet known, but WCR has reaffirmed its wish for the K1 to participate in Lochaber this season.”- NELPG NEWS 353 June 2026

I have every sympathy with anyone trying to get away with not complying with idiotic rules.....
Perhaps you need to read up on historical fatality rates for people falling from trains before CDL?
Much like folks who find it comical to berate 'elf'n'safety' without giving a thought about how they manage to get home without a scratch each day after work.
