What is the OLE at new Long Marston test loop? It looks like Siemens but not a type that I've seen before. Is this going to be released for general use?

A world-first cantilever design by electrification specialists, Furrer+Frey is to be unveiled at Rail Live in Long Marston.
Saving around 100kg of steel per structure, the Anglo-Swiss engineers state the sleek curved design reduces embodied carbon and installation costs.
I'm not convinced it will reduce installation costs if you need two piles instead using a Twin Track Canteliver with only one pile.

I think it looks good though.

Twin-track cantilevers put a lot more than twice the load on their foundations though - more weight, wind exposure and loading from the wire/pantographs but also a longer lever arm.
There'd be fewer pile locations (so less need to check for and move cabling etc.) but at least as much actual steel being driven into the ground.


Most recent schemes on double track use single posts on plain line so I presume it's cheaper.

Porterbrook's website states that the equipment round the loop is "Siemens SICAT X".

25kV overhead line equipment​


The track features 25kV overhead line equipment, using Siemens’ patented Sicat X technology which reduces the footprint of overhead line equipment (OLE).
This is a TSI compliant system offering span lengths of up to 112m and tension lengths of 2000m. It has the same cantilever components as SICAT UKMS.


Some people are talking about Furrer+Frey stuff - think that was just on display at their stand during the recent Rail Live trade show, and is not in use on the loop?

The train depicted is the 'Hydroflex' Hydrogen demonstrator, which was doing trips round the test track (on OLE).

I can't tell you much about it, but here's the photos I took whilst attending rail live last week so those that know more about OLE than I do can comment.

The train depicted is the 'Hydroflex' Hydrogen demonstrator, which was doing trips round the test track (on OLE).
Why can’t they agree on one single standard of OHLE in the UK? (of course there will be variations for speed and usage). Series 2 seems to be the standard in Scotland and the North West, but elsewhere it seems to be completely random.

Siemens has a 4-page PDF on its website describing SICAT X:

On the second page in the section headed 'Design' there's a good explanation with a diagram on how it works although I have to confess I don't really fully understand it. It's described on the first page as 'inclined' but I always understood that some early OHLE designs (such as those used by the Midi in SW France and the PRR in the USA between NYC and Washington DC, both types still existing in places) were called 'inclined' meaning that the catenary (support) wire is canted to the outside to allow the contact wire to exactly follow the path of curves rather than have a series of straight lines which seems to be much more of the usual practice. SICAT appears to have a canted catenary wire yet a series of straight lines on curves for the contact. Can an expert please clarify?
