Non-availability of single/return ITSO tickets on GTR web/app booking platforms

As some of you know GTR - in contrast to various other TOCs - do not offer fulfilment to own-issue ITSO smartcards as a delivery option for web/app-bought single and return tickets, one day Travelcards included. I've seen it queried from time to time but I've yet to find the definitive reason for a limitation that didn't exist to start with (at least for fares they set) and doesn't exist for season tickets.

If my understanding is correct their smartcard fares are separate categories (e.g. 0AE for a "Smart" Anytime Day Return, not the typical Anytime Day Return (SDR) fulfilled by other means) and issued by their own ITSO back-office, whereas most other smartcard fares are simply ITSO fulfilments of the typical categories and issued by the RDG back-office delivered by the South East Flexible Ticketing (SEFT) programme.

The two back-offices are obviously connected as I purchased a Brentwood-origin Day Travelcard at a GTR TVM last year. So why is it single/return ITSO-fulfilled tickets (either GTR or SEFT-issue) can't be sold on GTR web/app booking platforms?

I suppose their answer would be why buy online when you can use Key Go?
Because KeyGo may give the best fare for the journey made but it may not always give the best ticket. For example, you might want to be able to use EMR services, not just Thameslink (I've been caught out by that when using KeyGo).

A Day Travelcard is one that works really well on a smartcard, but can't be bought online/in-app on GTR, and which normally involves journeys that wouldn't be possible on KeyGo. However, with Contactless now available from more and more GTR served stations, I can't see GTR fixing this just for one ticket, which can still be bought at a TVM.

Forget SEFT it's STNR (Smart Ticketing on National Rail) or more accurately STH (Smart Ticketing Hub) I suppose their answer would be why buy online when you can use Key Go?
Have SWR decided to start accepting KeyGo now?

Indeed. KeyGo for many years was prohibited other than on GTR and GWR trains and daily caps for journeys inside the Travelcard Zones weren't always available, even if you didn't use any non-GTR services. I don't know the current situation, perhaps the latter has improved? Tap2Go functioned slightly better but also had certain operator limitations.

It'll be quite a long time at current glacial rates of progress before CPAY is available at relatively busy stations from where day trips to Central London are very popular such as Bexhill, Downham Market or Arundel. An easy to use and convenient Day Travelcard has been on offer from these stations for many decades now.

Is there any move towards uniting the various PAYG areas that surround London?

I live right on the boundary between two of them (SWR and GWR) so have a strong personal interest.

As for the OP's original enquiry, I tried requesting a Hitchin to Kings Cross day return for today on both GWR and SWR apps. (I have both Smartcards). GWR didn't offer me the Smartcard option but SWR did (?).

To belatedly answer your question - yes, but only between Dorking and Clapham Junction. Even then it's not clear if journeys where the origin and/or destination aren't managed by GTR (ergo, likely not connected to the GTR back-office) will be validated as such.

GWR will sell Inboundary day Travelcards for Smartcard fulfilment, but you have to search for a journey where the origin and destination stations are on GWR's (pre-Crossrail) patch e.g. West Drayton to Ealing Broadway. If you search West Drayton to Liverpool Street, say, it will offer the day Travelcard, but not for Smartcard fulfilment.

Where the Outboundary Travelcard you want isn't available for Smartcard fulfilment, getting an Inboundary one from GWR and a day return to Boundary Zone 6 from the Forum's site or Avanti might be a good workaround? Even if the Boundary Zone ticket has to be an e-ticket or ToD, it still avoids the faff of having to use a paper ticket when travelling around London.

Thanks. That's useful information. Although it's also another fine example of the totally messed up and bizarre ticketing arrangements that exist in the fragmented railway.

It sounds like they've just given in and allowed it for the common use case people were already using it for, and most guards thought it was already permitted to use it for, doesn't it? I bet it doesn't work at Ewell East, as you suggest, you'd need Tap2Go.

Thank you matt

As soon as GTR joined the DfT Operator fold I requested an answer to my OP question through FoI, which they've sent to me today.

REQUEST

2. I am aware that ITSO tickets bought through an app or web booking can only be fulfilled to the retailer's own smartcards. So why is it that GTR - in contrast to many other Train Operating Companies - has not enabled its single/return tickets for Key Smartcard fulfilment on web/app bookings? This is bizarre because your season tickets *are* enabled as such, and your single/return tickets were enabled as such by the previous operator (Govia TR) until 2019.
RESPONSE

2. [Govia] TR did originally have our single and return tickets enabled for Key Smartcard fulfilment on web/app bookings but decided to turn it off as in practice it was not the best customer experience for a number of reasons. There were issues at the time with fulfilment to smartcard in general; additionally, at the time tickets were only able to be collected via gates and validators from 2 hours after purchase; and finally customers were only able to purchase one ticket at a time and then couldn't purchase another ticket until they collected the previously purchased ticket. The decision was made to turn them off until we could improve the customer proposition. We are currently exploring how we can re-enable this functionality.

It's good to hear this iteration of GTR is giving the re-enablement of web/app ITSO single/return fulfilment some consideration, but I doubt the limitation of loading one ITSO ticket at a time will go away.

GTR is certainly an outlier on this, at least locally. I heard that GTR singles and returns can be purchased and loaded to a smartcard using a ticket machine but only on machines located "outside the London area". Can anyone confirm this, and if it's correct what is meant by "the London area"? Would it apply, for example, to somewhere like Epsom, which is not in a London borough but is in an Oyster zone (10)?

In this context "the London area" actually means the Oyster area (Zones 1-14), which does include Epsom and certain other stations outside Greater London.

Most NR Ticket Vending Machines there are only fitted with the Pearl variant of Oyster reader and cannot issue ITSO tickets; you need a functioning ITSO reader for that. In terms of GTR-owned Oyster area TVMs with functioning ITSO readers Gatwick Airport has some if memory serves, but I don't know if any other stations have them.

Which fare/route were you interested in purchasing? Have you tried to purchase it on the Southeastern App using a Southeastern Smartcard?

Non-GTR stations with ITSO readers include some Greater Anglia TVMs at Liverpool Street, the EMR TVMs at St Pancras, the Chiltern TVMs at Marylebone and some GWR TVMs at Padddington.

Al TVMs should have ITSO readers DfT paid for it in 2018
Really? I didn’t see ITSO readers last time I used an Elizabeth Line Cubic TVM (unless the oyster reader does ITSO). Admittedly, they are not up to “national rail” standard for at least one other thing (TOD still needs a card inserted).

I must admit I was under the impression Oyster readers at NR stations could now read ITSO cards. Certainly the gateline Oyster readers at Epsom can read ITSO.

So I was surprised at GTR only having the facility to load to smartcard from ticket machines outside the Oyster area. I realise that loading to ITSO is not the same as reading ITSO, but I also remember as long ago as 2015 the gateline at East Croiydon could load to ITSO as gateline was then the only collection method for a smartcard ticket.

The whole thing feels like a jigsaw with missing pieces!

TfL sponsored services are different plus I'm sure the Elizabeth line wasn't open in 2018

I think some of the TVMs were in place then though (under the TFL rail brand)? I think they started putting them in at some stations in 2016-2017 ish. Not surprised TFL TVMs don’t have ITSO though (since they only allow travelcards on ITSO as far as I know).

TfL TVMs (including those at Tube stations) will show the contents of ITSO cards if presented but don't allow any products to be added.

I wonder if TFL considered allowing Travel cards to be loaded to ITSO at their machines? Would save them some Oyster stock (for seasons) and magstripe stock (for 1 day). Especially could be useful for 1 days when magstripe tickets stop being issued completely.

Should, maybe. They don't, though. Not in swathes of Greater London, anyway.
This matches my experiences. Most TVMs within the Oyster area have Oyster readers instead of ITSO.

Maybe at some larger terminals you'll find a couple with ITSO instead.

There are none with Oyster readers at King's Cross, and I am confident that the EMR machines at St Pancras and Avanti machines at Euston won't either. I can't comment on other stations as I haven't particularly looked
