Yes, you got it. All is fine right now. If extra capacity is needed longer trains is the first line of attack. Then the Stafford bypass, in-cab signals, removal of bottlenecks, etc.But we don't have longer trains. Surely if we needed them we'd have them?![]()

£10-20m?It’s difficult to see why an HS2 stop would need to be more expensive than maybe £10-20m. Yes it would need separate tracks or some sort of platform edge barriers (which aren’t that expensive) but also it isn’t on a live railway so it’s much closer to the “1m high wall plus driveway on top” cost that a train platform should be.
£750m a mile is still indefensibly ridiculous when HS1 was £100m/mile adjusted for inflation and pretty much every other project globally was cheaper.

There are only just over 4 million from Scotland to London, the South East and East.

EDIT: Avanti West coast had an average of 400 passengers per train in 2024/25. That’s fairly full - especially as there’s sections like the north wales coast or north of maybe Lancaster/Oxenholme where they will be less busy.
I cannot imagine that would cost that much in continental europe or rich Asia.
But even so if you had to increase the cost of HS2 phase 2a from £1.5bn to £1.7bn to accommodate that it’s not the end of the world.
Whatever this plan is it appears to involve more than one flyover/dive under. Building stuff on an active railway (let alone the busiest mixed traffic railway in Europe) is hideously expensive - which is why phase 2a is the most sensible and cheapest bit to build. The land is bought, the permissions are there, the plans are developed and some of the initial work has been done. Anyone who thinks a back of an envelope plan is a serious alternative needs to give their heads a wobble. Just build the damn thing and see how transformational it will be.Why? Capacity, capacity, they shout. If capacity was such an urgent problem, HS2 would be built ASAP, not in ten years time, so that section is not so vital as you might think. A WCML Stafford bypass is needed for many reasons safety being one of them, by extending HS2 from Fradley to Hixon, then a flying junction just before Stone then running to another flying junction onto the WCML north of Norton Bridge. Sorted. Liverpool and Manchester will have London journey times of around 1.5 hrs. Excellent. And not costing a billion per mile.

The original plans for the junction south of Basford Hall weren't overly complex. HS2 landed between the fasts, so it was a case of building/slewing offline, connecting new tracks, building the rest. I'd expect any junction proposed south of there to very similar. And if the crewe junction bit is extremely expensive because it’s a busy railway that probably strengthens the case for doing a flying junction further south next to the railway and then re-routing the existing railway through the middle at the end.
