Delayed on a journey crossing London

Hi all

I’m currently at Oxford awaiting the delayed 5.20 to Paddington, hoping to get the 7.03 LNER Kings Cross to Edinburgh.

I hold advance singles for the two legs plus an anytime travel card (I didn’t book my own tickets). In the event I miss my connection at Kings Cross, can I get the next LNER or do I need to buy a ticket?

As you have a continuous set of tickets*, yes you can get onto the next available LNER service due to a GWR delay. You can also claim delay repay from GWR for all three of your tickets.

*Some people argue you do not need a continuous set of tickets for crossing London and using contactless to get between London Terminals is fine.

Just to note for this protection you either need a through itinerary or make sure you meet the minimum connection times. This journey does meet the minimum connection times.

Thanks. I wasn’t sure what counted as a cross-London ticket!

Minimum connection time is 50 minutes, this itinerary is 51 minutes so it’s OK and I can get an itinerary from the forum’s site to confirm this.

The OP's train left Oxford at 05.49 and arrived at Paddington 26 minutes late at 06.38, according to RTT. That would have made an extremely tight connection for the 07.03 from King's Cross, which departed on time.

With some luck and skill* the OP might have made it from Paddington Platform 8 at 06:38 onto Hammersmith & City Line train #275, which stood at Paddington from 06:42½ for 2m7s and arrived King's Cross St Pancras at 06:55¼, and thence to King's Cross Platform 5 by 2 minutes before 07:03.

*This reminds of the time my friend had a similar (although timetabled, and speculative!) 25-minute interchange (and their train arrived 2 minutes early so they actually had 27 minutes) from Paddington to King's Cross, and I was joining them for the departure from King's Cross so messaged a warning that there are multiple stations at Paddington and to head for the Hammersmith & City Line and then take any eastbound train whether H&C or Circle. They responded that they're not an idiot, and then promptly went to the wrong station, causing us to miss our train despite there having been a suitably timed H&C/Circle train that they would have made it on. While waiting for the next departure, which was the one we actually planned to get, they explained apologetically that they thought I just meant there are different lines...

The 2 minutes stood at Baker Street would have been nerve racking though!

This was exactly what happened. All fine, except for the lack of time for coffee en route.
