Shiny plastic bus seats on which you slide forward every time the driver brakes, only overcome by having a damp and sticky bottom. Which, however, did seem to be the case for the pensioners on the service I was on yesterday.....

Cheeky gits who use your green bin.
Our green waste was collected early this morning, when I went out to wheel the bin back it was about a third full of fresh tree/shrub cuttings.

People who stand chatting right by the bus‘ open door for several minutes while it is at its starting point until the driver starts the vehicle up, whereupon they both board. The first one then takes out his ‘phone and spends a long time finding the page to pay with. Only when he moves away does his companion take out his ‘phone and start searching through it for the right page.

My personal bugbear is misuse of decimated.
But all this hyperbolic mangling of the English language brings me on to what I'd really like to ban: Ally McCoist.
On the theme of hyperbolic mangling, I will take aim at those who try to ignore the evolving meaning of the English language - "decimate" being an example. My copy of the OED includes a definition that fits the way the word is used now, rather than the very strict meaning inherited from the Latin.
Surely it's possible to acknowledge that the English language evolves in particular ways but at the same time to lament and be irritated by specific examples which might be considered to exemplify bastardisation over and above evolution. "I literally died laughing" to give just one example.

Cannot agree there! IMHO he is one of the more entertaining pundits. I still remember former Rangers player Alfredo Morelos being substituted and walking off with a face like thunder; McCoist's comment was 'there's a guy needs a hug from his Mum'.
One of my pet aversions is when folk use the word "obviously" repeatedly when warming to their theme and each time the words which follow the word "obviously" are not in the least obvious other than perhaps to the speaker. I think in some cases it is one of these ways of (in the words of WS Gilbert) "adding verisimilitude to an otherwise bald and unconvincing narrative." (Pedant mode now off).
Packaging of food products in a needless integral combination of clear plastic and cardboard can be an irritation if not easily segregated for recycling purposes.

People who, when the FastCat is running late but the crew are trying to catch up by having single-file boarding while the last lot are still disembarking, hold up the line while they stop to complain that the boat is going up and down. When told that there is a fairly brisk south-easterly wind they say, ‘It didn’t do that when we came over’. No doubt they will never holiday on the island again because it is surrounded by water.

When the government ban under 16s from social media, at the same time they should also ban over 16s from playing video games. Just as children shouldn't be accessing adult content nor should adults be indulging in activities aimed at children.
If you're a grown man or woman you really should be spending your leisure time doing something intelligent or imaginative, not frantically prodding at coloured blobs on your mobile phone screen!

I think I’ll agree with that. Based on experience of some adults today, I question just how well prepared some adults are to face the world!
I will add that for some adults with certain conditions, video games (of the PC/console variety, not mobile games) are their only way of socialising with others. So for them, I’d leave it as the status quo.
Now if it’s a mobile game aimed at things like improving memory or other useful skills like problem solving, then fair enough. I suspect that is not what adults are doing with their phones though! For context, I have a game called Flow Free on my phone, rarely touched in all fairness, for those times when I’m bored on a train or waiting for one. It’s not bad for engaging the brain in something, although I will confess I often forget I’ve got it installed! I used to play Vita Majohng or however it’s spelt, which is meant to be good for keeping the memory strong, however I got rid of it as it was seriously addictive. Hours and hours a day I’d be on it, which is not good at all!
Regarding the social media thing, I saw something pop up about it on Monday and if it’s handled correctly, I think it’ll be a good thing to help the modern youth grow into functional adults. Having seen what the social media era has done to a lot of ‘adults’ in recent times, something needs to be done!

My newsfeed often contains short anecdotes from people with a frequent one being ‘why your marriage went wrong/what was the final straw that killed your relationship’; most are American. Purely subjectively, it seems to me that it is becoming increasingly common to read of the male partners (it is only very rarely the female as they have other vices) spending more and more time playing video games and either not contributing to the household or behaving in an appallingly crass and self-centred manner (leaving partner to drive herself to hospital when she had gone into labour as they won’t leave their game, for example). There are lots of these stories and, although some may be invented or embroidered, video games seems to particularly attract or create obsessives.
I wouldn't read too much into the frequency that you see stuff on a newsfeed. I suspect that its that the algorithm thinks you engaged with it, when it was shown to you before, so you keep getting served up similar stuff, a fair amount of which is probably AI generated text. Its not about whether those articles are right or wrong, if they get engagement, that leads to eyeballs on adverts and that makes money for the site.

One phrase that irritates me is one that we will, no doubt, hear soon in connection with the tragic event at Elstow. "It must never happen again"; Once used about some tragedy (usually involving public transport) it becomes a reason to throw enormous amounts of money at quickly resolving some technical 'issue' that caused a tragedy, even though the tragedy itself almost invariably occurred as a result of a very peculiar combination of circumstances that were never foreseen and are extremely unlikely to ever occur again. That money gets diverted from the ongoing maintenance and improvement budgets which then become underfunded and the solution ends up weakening the overall system in favour of strengthening the protection against one particular issue recurring even though the risk was minimal in the first place. What makes it worse is that some issues in the private car or van use on roads arise far more frequently and probably kill or maim far more people with more general acceptance and much less willingness to spend money on their resolution.

Quite so everyone, the amount of people one sees wasting fuel while sat playing on their phones in a parking spot is just ridiculous. Absolutely no need at all!
I would comment on people I know who drive but could easily walk just as quick if not quicker in the notoriously bad local traffic, but they don’t. I’ll just leave it at that!
In spirit of the thread, I’ll add my absolute cringe at things like the following:
“Love that for you!”
“I’m here for it”
Every time I hear someone say those two things in particular, I cringe!
I would comment on people I know who drive but could easily walk just as quick if not quicker in the notoriously bad local traffic, but they don’t. I’ll just leave it at that!
In spirit of the thread, I’ll add my absolute cringe at things like the following:
“Love that for you!”
“I’m here for it”
