So it's likely that the 360 passed a signal at danger, right? An IET doesn't stop on a dime so the signal protecting it should have been red for some time, and the one before it at caution. Anyone have an idea of how up the line the 810 was from the last signal?

The track layout is such that the 360 saw the caution? At what speed would a driver normally proceed at on that route at that time? The 360 clearly was far below line speed (damage suggests 20-30 mph relative impact speeds; I assume the 810 was stationary), but I haven't read much eye witnesses talk of the train being under heavy braking (unless I've missed it).
One witness did describe some braking, but did not mention heavy or urgent braking.

Some witnesses said there was no braking at all.

This video from about 1h01m in shows the relevant area several years ago. I don't know if the signalling is still the same:

We cannot speculate about the driver's actions, not least as he has sadly died, but the impact looks like a fairly hard hit; the 810 derailed as a result and a number of severe injuries on the 360 is 30 or so. Also, the grade of the curve means the 810 would have been in sight for a considerable length of time had the train been doing only 20-30mph, and preparing to stop at the next signal.

A key question will be how fast the 360 was travelling and if and when power was taken after the crossover. This is a very familiar move for drivers heading south from Corby and is booked on most southbound turns from Corby.

I maintain my surprise that WH154 is not a TPWS fitted signal given its location; it's the first signal for a lot of trains moving onto the fasts and in my view there is a risk that routine work and the psychology of "getting onto the fasts to notch up and head direct to London at line speed" feeds into SPAD risk. Couple this with approach control and the risk of subconscious processing "this yellow is always here to remind me of my speed" rather than warning of an occupied section ahead and you may have another question RAIB may want to look at.

Of course, RAIB will also want to be sure which aspect was displayed to the driver and forward facing CCTV will answer this conclusively.

RAIB after more recent incidents have been fairly quick recently with a shortform overview of what they've found and intended course of their investigation as they are mindful of the wider social environment in todays world.

I would say that this "should not be possible", but in the case of a SPAD, without TPWS to intervene, then it is. I'd wager most SPADs these days are grids tripped end of story. It is still serious, but not crash into the back of another train serious.

I think what is evident is that a signal was passed at danger, if there was TPWS, it was insufficient to stop the train before the conflict point.
This is also of course ruling out a wrong-sided failure of the signal/TPWS.

Sadly it's the not knowing until the final report, especially for something this unusual.

WH356 with junction indicator position 4 will have some form of approach control on it given speed differential is >20mph so I wouldn't be surprised to see this open up another can of worms about how junction signalling operates in the UK and its impact on train handling.

From the point of view questions to be asked on the signalling system:

What aspect did 1H46 have in WH358 as it left Bedford station. Was the correct AWS received? Is this what a driver of this service would have normally expected?

What aspect did 1H46 have in WH356 as the train approached it? What did this signal clear up to? Was the correct AWS received? Is this what a driver of this service would have normally expected?

What aspect did 1H46 have in WH154? Was the correct AWS received? Is this what a driver of this service would have normally expected?

Note that as others have said, the public data feeds, the Train Describer and even the signallers indications may not be able to reveal all signal aspect information. No indications are normally provided for automatic signals and for controlled signals on relay based interlocking systems, the signaller only gets a red or proceed indication (same indication for single yellow, double yellow and green).

I understand that the investigation will look into the possibility of a signal aspect failure but I am not aware of any suggestion of this at present, so I believe we simply need to wait for the information to be released.
I asked because 800301 stated that the 360 "was approaching a Red signal" (154).

This information would not typically be available so I am asking if this is a fact - ie Berth Maps, (which I'm totally unfamiliar with) somehow has access to more/better information than OTT, or if that statement is an assumption (speculation) based on what the signal should have been showing.

If the aspect info isn't actually supplied to the TD system by the signalling system, then none of the systems driven by outputs from it can possibly have displayed meaningful aspect info on their maps.

From what I've read, and going off public images it looks like the 810 was stood at the signal, potentially pushed beyond it my the impact, so not just beyond the preceding signal

TPWS is provided:

• on passenger lines, at all main running signals capable of showing a stop aspect (including some stop boards) which protect crossing or converging movements

• at any signal capable of showing a stop aspect on a non-passenger line, where that signal that protects a crossing of, or convergence with, a passenger line

• at stop signals where conflicting movements could take place in the overlap of the next stop signal ahead

• on the approach to the buffer stops at the end of passenger platforms. These are fitted approximately 65 metres (70 yards) from the buffer stops, and will trigger a brake application at speeds greater than 10 mph

• on the approach to permissible speed reductions, where the permissible speed on the approach is 60 mph or more and the reduction in the permissible speed is at least one third.
Automatic signals protect a stretch of plain line, and do not fall into any of the categories above other than the speed restriction one, which didn’t apply here.

An automatic signal is one controlled by the passage of trains, rather than the signaller.
They can only be automatic if there is only one route (i.e. no junctions).

Some types of other hazards like level crossings and tunnels may also require controlled signals, although that's not relevant in this specific instance.

This was based on the replay of the incident on internal systems and must only be read/interpreted in that context.

While there is no known current suggestion of infrastructure failure, this needs to be investigated and therefore I suggest we wait until the information is released / known.

I'm already envisioning a clamour for TPWS on all signals, which could be frightfully expensive.
Any such suggestions would need to be posted in Speculative Discussion.

Automatic signals are those entirely controlled by the passage of trains and as a default are green. They are generally not fitted with TPWS. There are a few circumstances where they can be, but this signal is not and this is perfectly normal the way things are currently done.
If the signal was at danger (which it should have been due to the presence of the 810) it would have relied on the driver's input and the driver's input alone to reduce the train speed or stop the train.

This is a good point and runs to the wider issue about how junction signalling operates in the UK but we are pre ordaining the poor drivers actions though. RAIB have got out a preliminary information on bigger accidents over the last few years so if an obvious cause is identified quickly we may see something later next week. There are much wider issues here over how the trains behaved and the injuries sustained to passengers that will take a lot more investigation.

The yellow aspects are most likely extrapolated, even the internal software only shows Red or Green, as Most restrictive or 'Not most restrictive'.

A good example is OpenTrainTimes only shows red and green but SignalMaps shows yellows and as far as I know, they both come from the same data feed.

The answer is earlier in the thread. But basically, TPWS is normally only fitted at signals which have a junction or points beyond them (said signals are either controlled signals or occasionally a semi-automatic). Automatic signals are fitted on straight/plain line where there are no points.

While Berth Maps is an internal TOC system, it uses the same publicly available data from Network Rail that the other systems uses, including signal aspects.

Importantly in the context of this conversation, Berth Maps is not a safety critical system. To aid the user in everyday use, it makes assumptions about signal aspects where there is no underlaying data available. For instance, it typically shows automatic signals as red only because the section in front is occupied, not because there is data to prove it's red.

Whilst it’s probably still true as a statistic that we’ve one of the safest railways I can’t help but feel there has been a significant/worrying increase in these bigger incidents and we’ve been on a downward trajectory since 2020 - Carmont, Salisbury, the Welsh one and now Bedford. Whereas I can only really think of the Desiro at Watford in the whole of the 2010s but I may be mistaken?
These incidents are also publicised a lot more as they’re very rare, so it may seem like there is a huge increase when in reality it’s just broadcasted everywhere.

The same applies to aircraft incidents.

Automatic signals aren't routinely under the control of the signaller (or of route setting systems), they just display the appropriate aspect according to the state of the line ahead. Thus they are not used when there are points beyond them, because the signaller needs to have the option of which route to set over the points. To muddy the picture some automatic signals have a control for the signaller to put them to red in an unusual/emergency situation, and some non-automatic signals can be set to run in automatic mode.

I was involved in the early development of TPWS, which did some extensive analysis of many years of accident history. TPWS is a a simple system fitted only to "high risk" signals (and approaches to buffer stops and some speed restrictions), to apply the brakes when passing a red signal, or if approaching it too fast to stop. The analysis predicted such a system would prevent about 80% of the casualties that full supervision of train speed (Automatic Train Protection) would, and the accident history since it was fitted at the turn of the century largely bears this out. There have been fewer accidents overall and hardly any resulting from passing signals at danger.

The selection of high risk signals was based on an understanding that a sidelong or head-on collision would be worse than a head-to-tail collision, so high risk signals are generally those protection pointwork where that sort of more hazardous collision could take place. Thus, automatic signals are not generally fitted with TPWS.

SPAD alarm equipment is a relativity new thing. Unless there has been a determination of a requirement to provide it because a signal has been identified as high risk, there will be no such equipment or systems fitted to conventional interlocking systems (relay / route relay / geographical etc.).
Re-control of older signalling can provide SPAD alarms in the control system. But as someone mentioned upthread, if there is no separate overlap track circuit a SPAD alarm will not operate if the train passes the signal into an occupied section. It may operate when the rear of the train is through the overlap and the berth track circuit can clear, but by then in a four-aspect area the front will be quite close to the rear of a train waiting at the next signal.

Especially with one vehicle of the IET foul of the down main. I suspect the Neville Hill derailment’s recommendations will be revisited. (Link to that report.)
No one was injured in the accident, but the trailing bogie of the second and third vehicles and the trailing wheelset of the fourth vehicle of the Intercity Express Train derailed to the right, by up to 1.25 metres.

Signals are either 'Controlled' or 'Automatic'.
Controlled signals normally show a Red aspect and will only clear when the signaller has set a route from them (and the interlocking has determined it is safe to do so), and are required where there are points ahead of the signal.

Automatic signals operate purely from the train detection system, though there may be an Emergency Replacement facility on the panel which allows the signaller to hold them at Red. They normally display a proceed aspect and are replaced to Red by the passage of a train and remain so until the train has exited the section (to the next signal, plus it overlap). These can only be used to protect plain line, where the only obstruction ahead is another train.

When TPWS was fitted originally, the focus was on junctions, which were perceived to present a greater consequential risk in the event of a SPAD than a signal protecting just plain line, so those signals weren't generally required to be fitted with it.

The risk assessment carried out when TPWS was rolled out determined that the cost does not justify the expense of fitting them.

I agree. I wasn't speculating, just trying to understand whether the statement in another post was factual, or just speculation.

  • Which train crashed into the other: A Class 360 train collided with a Class 180 train. From images we have seen of the crash site, eyewitnesses and timings listed on train-tracking sites, it appears that the train from Corby collided with the back of the Nottingham train. However, this has not been confirmed

It felt like she was teeing him up to say what we all know - that our railways are incredibly safe - rather than catch him out. Tony Miles was also spoken to later on and it seems a few other people in and around the railway press did the same. Better than using a generic travel correspondent, I guess.

Thank you, that is as I suspected. Therefore 'we' don't know the aspect the 360 driver was presented with on approach to WH154.

I suspect that information will already be available to those investigating the accident, from other sources.

Just catching up on this news, how very sad for all involved. No doubt the RAIB will get to the bottom of this quickly. RIP to the driver of the 360, and speedy recovery to those injured.
No doubt the cause will be revealed soon, I am not one to speculate but it does look like a SPAD.

Agreed. There's been no official suggestion of driver error either...

Out of interest I have just checked the WON and there was S&T work in that very area the night before this happened.

We can't rule anything out at this stage.
